In the regular session, state lawmakers approved a bill that creates the Excellence Award within the TOPS program. It’s for high school students who achieve a 31 or higher on the ACT and have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Students who qualify can receive up to 12-thousand dollars to cover tuition at any Louisiana university. Ruston Representative Christopher Turner says TOPS is an investment in the state’s best and brightest students, and like any investment, Turner hopes to see a return.
Students currently receiving TOPS will not be eligible for the new award.

According to Triple-A, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.83. That’s up eight cents from a week ago.
Southeastern Louisiana is celebrating its 100th anniversary and they’ve surpassed their “Get There Together” fundraising campaign goal, which was 100-million dollars. The initiative will continue to raise money throughout Southeastern’s centennial year. President Dr. William Wainwright says he’s proud of the continued growth of the university and hopes the current momentum can ensure a strong future. He invites everyone, not just alumni, to join the 100-year celebrations.
