Big night for a couple of baseball players from southwest Louisiana as LSU improved to 4-0 last night with a ten-to-seven win over Kent State. Sulphur’s Jake Brown followed up his two-home run performance on Sunday with two more home runs last night. And former Barbe star Gavin Guidry recorded a seven-out save. Mason Braun and Zach Yorke also homered for the Tigers.

In college basketball last night…McNeese outscored Northwestern State 75 to 64. Nicholls came up a little short and lost to Houston Christian 72 to 68. East Texas A-and-M handled Southeastern Louisiana 70 to 53.

Texas Southern topped Southern 74 to 73 and Grambling fell to Prairie View 68 to 63.

The LSU men’s basketball team is at Texas tonight. The Tigers are expected to have Max Mackinnon back after missing the Tennessee loss with a knee injury. Tip off tonight is at 8.

This morning is the funeral for former Northeast Louisiana University football coach Pat Collins, who led the Indians to a Division One-Double-A national championship in 1987. He was 84 years old.

Northeast Louisiana has also lost another coaching legend in Jerry Arledge. He was West Monroe’s defensive coordinator when he and the late Don Shows won eight state championships for the Rebels. KNOE-TV sports director Aaron Dietrich…

Arledge was 83 years old.

And the U-L at Lafayette is mourning the death of one of its greatest college basketball players. Dwight “Bo” Lamar has passed away at the age of 74. He was a cornerstone in then-Southwestern Louisiana’s rise from an NAIA program to a prominent school at the Division One level. Lamar scored nearly 35-hundred points from 1969 to 1973.
