Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise has thrown his hat in the ring to be considered the next Speaker of the House. UNO Political Science Professor Dr. Ed Chervenak says it’s no surprise the House Majority Leader wants to move up the ranks.
Chervenak says the promotion would be beneficial to the Bayou State because the Speaker could marshal legislation and has the ability to insert clauses in bills that could be advantageous for Louisiana.
Thirty-three-year-old Ian Howard accepts a plea deal that will spare him the death penalty in the 2017 fatal shooting of Lafayette Police Corporal Michael Middlebrook, who was gunned down in the line of duty.
