The measure increases the penalty from a misdemeanor to a felony for distributing AI produced nudity of a minor. Some tense moments for some folks in Winn Parish as a wildfire approached their homes. Andrew Greenstein reports.

The Secretary of State’s office says delete any text message that claims to come from them that’s seeking personal information and potentially charge unnecessary fees. The Secretary of State’s Office does not send unsolicited text messages or emails threatening with prosecution or asking for payment.

Last month’s oil spill from a terminal operated by the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, or LOOP, is threatening the state’s oyster industry. Last month, a cargo transfer hose at the terminal located 18 miles offshore in Terrebonne Bay sprang a leak, spewing more than 31-thousand gallons of Venezuelan crude into the bay. Mitch Jurisich, the chairman of the Louisiana Oyster Task Force, says the oil has now made contact with the coast, which can spell disaster.

About 250 people in Winn Parish were forced to evacuate as a wildfire threatened their homes. Fire District Three Chief Dustin Parker says the dry weather allowed the fire to grow to about two-thousand acres.

The fire is fully contained, and everyone who had been evacuated is now back home.

Crawfish prices continue to drop as the Easter weekend approaches. That’s according to the Crawfish App, who says based on real-team pricing consumers can expect to pay an average of $3.71 per pound for live crawfish and $6.37 per pound for boiled crawfish. That’s a drop of 50-cents from last weekend.

The LSU baseball team begins a three-game series against eighth-ranked Oklahoma, starting tonight at 7 p-m at Alex Box Stadium-Skip Bertman Field. Coach Jay Johnson says LSU’s pitching staff will need to limit long innings against the Sooners’ talented offense.

Oklahoma ranks third nationally in stolen bases with 65.

The 25th ranked Ragin Cajuns picked up a nice road win last night, beating Houston six to three in 10 innings. Cody Brasch pitched well out of the pen to get his second win.

ULM outscored UNO 17-12, McNeese clobbered Prairie View 16 to 1 and Tulane blanked Northwestern State two to nothing.

The McNeese men’s basketball team aims for an upset in the NCAA Tournament as it faces fifth-seeded Vanderbilt today at 2:15 p-m. The Cowboys rank second in the nation in turnovers forced, averaging nearly 17 per game, and coach Bill Armstrong says his team will look to frustrate the Commodores on defense.

The Southern women’s basketball team faces Samford tonight at 6 in the First Four in the NCAA Tournament. It marks the Lady Jags’ second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Coach Carlos Funchess attributes the program’s continued success to recruiting the right players.

The Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana is clearing up what it says are misconceptions about Constitutional Amendment 3, which would give teachers in Louisiana a permanent pay raise. Andrew Greenstein reports.

A teacher in St. Tammany Parish is being accused of putting Band-Aids on seven students who were allegedly talking in class at Riverside Elementary School in Pearl River. The students’ ages range from 8 to 10. Thirty-eight-year-old George Serban faces several charges including simple battery and cruelty to juveniles.

 

According to a political action committee, the state’s first ever 100-percent A-I generated political advertisement will be seen on television in the fifth Congressional district. The Louisiana First Victory Fund produced the ad, which is supporting Rick Edmonds in the Republican 5th Congressional District race. Political consultant Lionel Rainey says A-I-generated political ads can cost less than a traditional commercial, and they can be produced faster.

The Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana, or A+PEL (“AY-pel”), is working to clear up what it says are misconceptions about Constitutional Amendment 3 on the May 16th ballot. A+PEL Executive Director Dr. Keith Courville says Amendment 3 would pay down debt within the Teachers Retirement System of Louisiana to fund permanent pay raises for teachers of at least 2,250 dollars.

There’s been some chatter that some money in the funds that would be retired under this amendment is intended for things like early childhood programs and classroom initiatives. A+PEL Executive Director Dr. Keith Courville says it’s actually not being used at all.

A forest in Winn parish yesterday burned thousands of acres and forced some 250 residents to evacuate.  But crews managed to get the fire contained before bedtime last night. Winnfield Fire Chief Brian Montgomery said the fire started just after noon.  Thankfully no homes were lost and no injuries reported.
