With its famous namesake on hand, Southeastern Louisiana University officially opens its new Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center. President Dr. William Wainwright says it includes a newsroom, a film studio and a multimedia studio, giving students experience in all facets of broadcasting.

Wainwright says the university is proud to have the name of one of its most prominent graduates affixed to its new broadcast media center, and she’s a main catalyst behind its construction.

The Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center is part of the renovation and expansion of D. Vickers Hall, adding an additional 33-thousand square feet to the 80-thousand-square-foot facility. Wainwright says it’s a building for the entire student body.

A close call for the sheriff of Assumption Parish, as he’s shot by a shooting suspect he was confronting. Sheriff’s spokesman Lonny Cavalier says Sheriff Leland Falcon was close to the scene when the call for assistance came down, so he responded and encountered the suspect.

Cut 6 (08) “…the left torso.”

While Sheriff Falcon never fired his weapon, one of his deputies returned fire and hit the suspect. Cavalier says that suspect and the victim of the original shooting that led to the 911 call were taken to hospitals.

Cut 7 (14) “…with moderate injuries.”

Cavalier says one deputy suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while Falcon was grazed by the suspect’s bullet and was briefly hospitalized.

Woo says the voting is in the form of a six-round single-elimination tournament, until one emerges as the most haunted destination in the country.

A northeast Louisiana assistant police chief finds himself on the other side of the law. State Police arrested Rayville Assistant Police Chief Czyz (“chizh”) Williams for theft and malfeasance in office. Trooper Ryan Davis says Williams was selling department property and pocketing the money.

Davis says all those police department firearms Williams had sold have since been recovered. And Davis says that’s not all Williams allegedly did.

Cut 13 (12)  “…crime prevention programs.”

Davis says none of the money that Williams collected for these nonexistent crime prevention programs went to the Rayville Police Department – he kept the money himself. He says it’s unclear whether any of that money has been recovered and returned to the donors. Davis says having a member of the law enforcement community do these things erodes trust.

According to the Rayville Police Department’s website, Williams is still employed by the department.

Sheriff Leland Falcon was confronting a shooting suspect when the suspect grabbed a shotgun and shot towards him. A deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect. Sheriff’s spokesman Lonny Cavalier says Falcon was grazed by the suspect’s bullet and was briefly hospitalized.

The Saints will face their old coach on Sunday. Dennis Allen is the defensive coordinator for the three and two Chicago Bears. Allen has spent most of his coaching career in New Orleans. Saints defensive end Cam Jordan says he appreciated his many years with Allen and says no love has been lost.

Wild game in the NFL last night…as the Bengals without Joe Burrow defeated Pittsburgh 33 to 31. Joe Flacco threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Former LSU star Ja’Marr Chase had 16 catches for 161 yards and a TD.

High School football tonight…Ruston and Neville face off for the 100th time tonight.

A close call for the sheriff of Assumption Parish, as he’s shot by a shooting suspect he was confronting. Sheriff’s spokesman Lonny Cavalier says Sheriff Leland Falcon was close to the scene when the call for assistance came down, so he responded and encountered the suspect.

Sheriff Falcon was treated and released. State Police says the man who shot at the sheriff was shot by a responding deputy and is in critical condition.

In response to two shootings on LSU’s campus last weekend, Unity Field near the intersection of Highland Road and South Stadium Drive is closed for the remainder of the football season. Officials say two recent shootings have been linked to that tailgating spot. Interim LSU President Matt Lee says disciplinary action could be taken against a student organization that attempted to hold an unsanctioned event in that area last Saturday, which led to a huge crowd…

The number of standardized tests high school sophomores must take is being reduced from 6 to 4 next school year. Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley says the two English and two math tests currently required are being consolidated into one each.

Brumley says students must pass the English and math tests, and either the biology or the civics test to graduate.

New Orleans Congressman Troy Carter was providing TSA agents at Louis Armstrong International Airport with free lunches during the government shutdown, but Carter says TSA agents have told him they can no longer accept the free food. Donations from political figures is apparently a no-no.

 

Public high school students will take two less standardized tests as a result of a new policy approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley says high school students will now take four standardized tests, and they will need to pass the English and Math tests and either Biology or civics test…

Two people were shot, and Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon was grazed by a bullet Thursday in Pierre Part. One victim, a neighbor of the suspect, was found wounded in a front yard when Falcon with a responding deputy arrived on scene on Bayou Drive. The sheriff confronted the suspect behind a house nearby and the suspect opened fire grazing the Sheriff. The suspect was then shot. Both the first victim and the suspect were transported to hospitals. Authorities say Sheriff Falcon is okay. State Police are investigating and say Falcon did not fire at the suspect.

As special legislative session to push back 2026 election schedules will begin next week. The Supreme Court considering the constitutionality of the creation of the state’s second majority Black congressional district. La Politics dot com Publisher Jeremy Alford notes that if the calendar is not altered, the state could be forced to use the current map for the 2026 election cycle even if the Supreme Court strikes it down.

After a pair of shootings on campus last weekend, LSU announced security enhancements for the rest of the football season. One of those shootings stemmed from an unsanctioned event at Unity Field near the intersection of Highland Road and South Stadium Drive, is where most of the school’s Black fraternity members tailgate. Interim President Matt Lee says that venue is now off-limits and denies that race has anything to do with the decision.

LSU plays in Nashville this weekend and the defense will be challenged facing Vanderbilt’s number-seven scoring offense. Coach Brian Kelly says the Tigers’ defense has to play disciplined throughout the entire game.

Starting in the 2026-27 school year, the number of standardized tests they will take will go down from six to four. State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley says it’s one less thing that those students will have to worry about.

Linebacker Whit Weeks and defensive tackle Bernard Gooden are starters on LSU’s defense. Weeks’ ankle that had offseason surgery on it is bothering him, and Gooden has an injured collarbone.
