A Chicago woman visiting New Orleans for her 33rd birthday is shot and killed on Bourbon Street early yesterday morning. Police say there was a fight that broke out near Canal Street, and it escalated into gunfire, and the woman was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick is urging people who visit the French Quarter to leave their guns at home.

What was supposed to be a festive weekend in Alexandria turned into a weekend of frustration and anger. All events during homecoming weekend at Peabody Magnet High School were cancelled because of what officials say was a credible security threat. Community activist Tony Brown is furious.

Governor Landry wants the EPA to pick up the pace in cleaning up the Tangipahoa River following last month’s explosion at Smitty’s Supply in Roseland. In a video posted to social media, Landry said he watched a video of what the river looks like more than 30 days after the explosion, and he was disgusted at the sight of all the oil in the water.

The EPA says it’s already cleaned up almost seven million gallons of waste from the river and adjacent ponds and four million gallons have been shipped for disposal.

Due to what they say were credible threats, officials in Alexandria cancel Peabody Magnet High School’s homecoming weekend. Jeff Palermo reports.

That threat is one of several threats made towards schools in Rapides Parish; and now, we’re getting word that a juvenile has been arrested in connection with a threat against Pineville High School. The threat was determined not to be credible. The juvenile is charged with terrorizing and is booked into the Renaissance Home for Youth.

Four people were shot on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Sunday morning. A female tourist from Chicago celebrating her birthday was killed, and her sister was wounded. NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick…

Another woman was also wounded and so was a male. Cops are looking for four people who were involved in the shooting.

Tough weekend for LSU and Saints fans as their teams lost but Ragin Cajuns fans are riding high after watching their team rally back from a 17-point deficit to beat Marshall in double overtime.  Backup quarterback Lunch Whitfield came off the bench and accounted for five touchdowns…

Peabody High School in Alexandria had to cancel its homecoming parade and its football game against Franklin because of what authorities call a credible threat. Owner of the Peabody Warhorse Nation Network, Tony Brown, says the cancellation of the parade came hours before it was set to start on Saturday and many people are upset…

It was a successful homecoming for the ULM Warhawks as they snapped a 15-game losing streak to Arkansas State by rallying back from a ten-point deficit to beat the Red Wolves 28-16 on Saturday. Warhawks Coach Bryant Vincent says it’s another big win for the program and the community…

LSU Health Shreveport is awarded its first National Science Foundation grant — 7.5-million dollars to launch a new research center. Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Oren Rom says they will teach students the basic skills in biotechnology and molecular biology, specifically in the field of metabolic research to combat diseases like obesity, diabetes and liver disease.

Kirkpatrick says three others were injured in the shooting, including the woman’s sister. And the search is on for four people who were in a fight when gunfire rang out in the New Orleans French Quarter.

LSU Health Shreveport is awarded a 7.5-million-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation to launch a new research center. It’s the first NSF-funded center grant in the history of LSUHS. Dr. Oren Rom, the senior associate dean for basic and translational research, says the center will provide research opportunities for students at every level.

You can count Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple among those who would support a change in how the National Hurricane Center rates the strength of hurricanes. Currently, the hurricane center rates hurricanes from Category One to Category Five based solely on wind speed. A consortium of experts from the University of South Florida is proposing a different system that would also consider rainfall and storm surge, which Temple says are often more dangerous than wind speed.

With the new scale, a storm with two or more Category factors would be a Category Six storm.

A Chicago woman was killed and three others injured in a Sunday morning shooting on Bourbon Street and New Orleans Police are looking for the suspected shooter seen on surveillance video wearing a gray and black hoodie. He is seen with another man and two women at the time of the shooting around 2 a.m. The New Orleans Police Department says a fight escalated leading to a “shootout” but the cause of the shooting remains under investigation. The woman who died was an innocent bystander in town celebrating her 33^rd birthday.

A fugitive for over 20 years, 61-year-old Van Leo has been sentenced to 3 life sentences in prison for the rape and molestation of several children in the 1990’s. Calcasieu Parish D.A. Stephen Dwight says Leo was brought back to Louisiana from Iowa. He says he thought he got away with it.

Van Leo owned a restaurant in Sulphur and Dwight says the victims, ages 4 years old to 12, were family members or friends of his family.

Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple supports a change in the hurricane rating system. He says a proposed new system would better assist governments decide when to issue evacuation orders. It would have given different ratings to notable storms of the past that were based solely on windspeed.
