The U.S. Senate primary in Louisiana is not until next April, but the gloves are already off. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Turkey callers from across the nation have flocked to Hammond for the Louisiana State & U.S. Open Turkey Calling Championships at the Southern Boyz Outdoor Store. Contest Manager Hunter Lemoine says the competition is open to all ages, with preliminary events starting tomorrow, and 12 gobblers from each division will compete in the finals on Saturday.

Lemoine says the event invites both competitors and spectators to enjoy a weekend of entertainment, including a gun raffle, live music, banquets, and food.

Cut 4 (10) “…hunting and fishing trips.”

On Saturday, Southern Boyz will also host its first annual cookoff to benefit TARC, a nonprofit supporting children and adults with disabilities. Lemoine says that Whether you’re a seasoned turkey caller or just looking for a fun weekend activity, there’s something for everyone at this unique and lively outdoor event.

State Senator Blake Miguez is pulling no punches in telling voters how he feels about Senator Bill Cassidy in his video announcing his candidacy for U.S. Senate. He’s reminding voters of a certain vote Cassidy took four years ago in the second impeachment trial of then-former President Donald Trump.

The New Iberia Republican did take time to introduce himself to statewide voters in his nearly two-minute-long video.

While Miguez is painting Cassidy as someone who does not stand with President Trump, Cassidy says that simply is not true.

And Cassidy defended his record in his two terms in the U.S. Senate representing the people of Louisiana.

Cassidy says he welcomes the primary challenges and the attack ad, saying it’s not the first one and likely won’t be the last one. Miguez joins State Treasurer John Fleming as notable candidates challenging Cassidy for the Republican Senate nomination.

On Saturday, LSU first baseman Jared Jones went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts. Today he’s a hero. Jones hit a game tying home run in the eighth inning and then singled off the second baseman’s glove in the ninth inning for the game winning hit in a dramatic six to five win over Arkansas

LSU trailed 5-to-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning but found a way to win. Coach Jay Johnson says his guys play with a togetherness that helps them win close ball games…

It was LSU’s third walk-off win of the year and the Tigers have rallied several times this year after trailing by multiple runs. Jones says this team never gives up….

Luis Hernandez hit a two-run double to tie the game before Jones won it with his single.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending TikTok’s operation in the U.S. for 90 days, marking the third extension as his administration seeks to transfer the app to American ownership.  Tech Gumbo Host Haggai Davis says at some point these executive orders will wear thin.

Originally banned by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court, TikTok briefly went dark in January before Trump’s first order revived it. Negotiations for a U.S.-based spinoff stalled after China withdrew due to Trumps tariffs on China. Davis says its unlikely China would want to sell.

Concerns are with content algorithms and data protections used to collet information on its users.  Davis says with Trump benefiting politically from TikTok and if the app is banned from the U-S market many small business owners will suffer.

President Trump is extending Tik Tok ban a third time, giving the short-form video app’s parent company, Byte Dance, another 90 days to find an American owner. The host of the Tech Gumbo podcast, Haggai Davis, says there are many who do not want Tik-Tok to go away, including small businesses…

A deal has been reached to keep the horses running at the Fair Grounds Race track in New Orleans. Churchill Downs, which owns the track, threatened not to have a season later this year, because the state supreme court ruled it could not have historical horse racing machines, because voter approval was required. Details of the agreement are not known, but live racing will take place at the Fairgrounds starting in late November.

Even though the cast of characters is different, LSU actually has a score to settle with the Chanticleers; en route to their national title in 2016, Coastal eliminated the Tigers in the Baton Rouge Super Regional.

A former long-time sheriff of Terrebonne Parish has died. The sheriff’s office says Jerry Larpenter passed away peacefully yesterday. Larpenter was first elected in 1985 and served 21 years, he stepped away for one-term, and one was re-elected again in 2011 and 2015. He served as sheriff for about 30 years before current Sheriff Timothy Soignet replaced him in 2020…

During his time as sheriff, Larpenter established a full-time K-9 team, purchased state of the art communications equipment, body cameras and bulletproof vests.

Head coach Jay Johnson says it conjured up memories of two years ago, when Tommy White launched the Tigers into the final round with a walk-off home run against top-seeded Wake Forest.

The championship series against Coastal Carolina will begin Saturday night.

The newest inductees into the Saints Hall of Fame are cornerback Tracy Porter and safety Brett Maxie. Porter played four seasons in New Orleans, and had an interception in the 2009 NFC Championship game to set up the game winning field goal and a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown to cap the Saints Super Bowl win over the Colts.

Maxie played for the Black and Gold for nine seasons and recorded 438 tackles and 15 interceptions and he’s considered one of the best safeties in franchise history. He credits his family and his faith for where he is today and the shared values they instilled in him.

Tragedy in Alexandria…A six-year-old is dead and two other children are in critical condition after a four-wheeler crashed into a car at an intersection last night. Police say a 12-year-old was driving the four-wheeler. It’s illegal for ATVs to operate on city streets.

 

A class action lawsuit has been filed against drug-store chain CVS for sending out a text message to many of its customers in a lobbying effort against a bill that would prohibit pharmacy benefit managers from owning pharmacies. The legislation did not pass. CVS says if it did, they would be forced to close down pharmacies. Plaintiffs attorney Jerome Moroux says CVS used private patient information in an illicit manner…

CVS says it had a responsibility to inform its customers of what it calls misguided legislation.

Former longtime Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter has passed away. Larpenter served as sheriff for 30 years until his retirement in 2020. Current sheriff Tim Soignet says Larpenter was known for his huge personality and his love of Terrebonne Parish…

During his time as sheriff, Larpenter established a full-time K-9 team, purchased state of the art communications equipment, body cameras and bulletproof vests.

Governor Jeff Landry says Louisiana has become the first state to authorize local law enforcement to neutralize dangerous drones. The new law empowers specifically trained officers to deploy both kinetic and non-kinetic technology to neutralize drones operating unlawfully near high-risk areas such as schools, public events, and critical infrastructure….

Penalties for violators include fines of up to five-thousand-dollars, up to one year in jail, and mandatory forfeiture of the drone used in the offense.

The Hispanic Heritage Fest in Kenner scheduled for September has been canceled. Organizers said they did not want to put the community at risk with an increase in raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. VIVA NOLA publisher Anamaria Bech (beck) is disappointed over the cancellation announcement…

The federal immigration crackdown has led to the cancellation of the Kenner Hispanic Festival, which had been slated for this September at the Kenner Boat Launch. Anamaria Bech (“beck”), the publisher of VIVA NOLA, says a big reason is Kenner’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Plaintiffs Attorney Jerome Moroux wants to know what information was used by CVS in distributing its message.
