More than 100,000 customers lost electricity during a series of rolling blackouts on Sunday, but as of Monday morning, power had been fully restored across New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, and the Northshore by the evening and the mandatory outages have ended. We’re told the outages were done to prevent a bigger, longer blackout and keep the grid stable.

Today is Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer. Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Charlton Meginley says it’s an important day as our country owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, including more than 11-thousand Louisianans.

People are remembering Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson today as well.  Robertson, famous for founding the Duck Commander hunting company, had battled multiple health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease.  The family made the announcement Sunday night on Instagram. Phil Robertson was 79 years old.

The Louisiana Department of Health is responding to an overdose crisis in pregnant women with Project M.O.M, which stands for Maternal Overdose Mortality. According to LDH, accidental opioid overdose has been the leading cause of pregnancy-associated death in Louisiana since 2018.

MOM Program Director, Carrie Templeton says the goal of the program is to reduce pregnancy-associated overdose deaths by 80% within the next three years.

This is the time of year when termites rear their ugly heads. LSU entomology professor Aaron Ashbrook says even though you should leave termite treatment to the professionals, there are things you can do to protect your home from termites.

The LSU baseball Tigers will host a Regional this weekend. They were among the 16 schools awarded with a Regional and we’ll find out at 11 AM who will be coming to the Baton Rouge Regional and if the Tigers are a Top 8 national seed.

Georgia, Auburn, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee. Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are the other SEC schools hosting a regional. The Rebels lost to Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament Championship game three to two on Sunday. Ole Miss eliminated LSU in the SEC Tournament, beating the Tigers two to nothing on Saturday. LSU was held to two hits and first baseman Jared Jones believes the offense will be better this weekend..

LSU is expected to be the only team from Louisiana in the NCAA Tournament this year. Southeastern Louisiana had a good chance, but their early exit in the Southland Tournament will likely keep them out.

Tulane made it to the American Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game, but the Green Wave lost to East Carolina eight to two and Tulane’s season ends with a 33-25 record.

Today at the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, Loyola of New Orleans will play Cumberlands of Kentucky at 1 PM central time. The Wolfpack avoided elimination on Saturday with a 12 to 9 win over British Columbia. Former Acadiana star Garrett Felix drove in three runs and former Brother Martin star Caden Durand had the save.

And tonight LSU-Shreveport will play defending national champion Hope International in a winner’s bracket game.

Former Louisiana Tech quarterback and the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty Family has passed away at the age of 79. Phil Robertson was the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs ahead of Terry Bradshaw.

The family made the announcement on Instagram Sunday night.  Years before becoming famous on television, Robertson played football at Louisana Tech. He was a starting quarterback whose backup was NFL legend Terry Bradshaw.  Robertson founded Duck Commander in 1972. “Duck Dynasty”  premiered 40 years later.  Phil Robertson was 79.

This is the time of year when termites rear their ugly head. As such, there are things you need to do to protect your properties. LSU entomology professor Aaron Ashbrook says the very best thing you can do to protect your property is to call a professional.

Ashbrook says in Louisiana, there are two types of homes – homes that have termites and homes that will eventually have termites.

Ashbrook says even though you should leave termite treatment to the professionals, there are things you can do to protect your home from termites.

Ashbrook says underground bait stations also go a long way towards protecting your home from termites.

In the next 90 days Templeton is bringing hospital and community partners together to develop a plan to track data and performance to help develop best practices and pilot programs. She says improving access to care by training and supporting providers in multiple settings is key.

Templeton says the sooner substance use disorder is identified the sooner lifesaving medications like Naloxone and Buprenorphine can be made available.

In addition to increasing screening and improving access to care, connecting hospital and clinic providers is important for referral to rapid outpatient treatment. Templeton says one valuable resource is the presence of Peer Navigators in some emergency rooms.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign ramps up seat belt law enforcement, increasing the likelihood of tickets for unbuckled drivers and passengers. The initiative stresses buckling up to avoid a 50-dollar fine and reminds driver’s seat belt safety to reduce crash fatalities. LHSC spokesperson Mark Lambert Lambert says data shows more than 88-percent of Louisiana drivers wear a seat belt, and nearly half of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were unbelted.

In St. Martin Parish, sheriff’s investigators are looking for an LSU SEC championship ring that was stolen earlier this month. Major Ginny Higgins says the ring was among many items stolen from a home on May 13th. Higgins says investigators have made arrests in this case.

Tulane will take on UTSA in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.  Grambling beat Southern and Florida A&M the two teams play again today in the SWAC Tournament. The LSU Tigers are set to play Ole Miss in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament.

Anthony Eyanson threw three shutout innings for the save. Coach Jay Johnson says the plan was to pitch their two best starting pitchers on Friday night and now others will have to step up today against Ole Miss…

Another jail break – this one in Tangipahoa Parish. 19-year-old Tra’Von Johnson escaped Thursday afternoon as jail workers were cleaning a flooded jail cell. He apparently got out during the very short time that a cell door and an outside door were open simultaneously. Sheriff Gerald Sticker says deputies thought they spotted him Thursday night, but an hours-long search came up empty.

Two juveniles have been arrested in the case. They are not believed to be behind any similar burglaries.
