The first person who was to be executed in Louisiana in 15 years has died over the weekend. 81-year-old Christopher Sepulvado who spent more than 30 years on death row was scheduled to be executed by way of lethal gas on March 17th. Attorney General Liz Murrill said she had no plans of calling off the execution had Sepulvado lived.

In 1992, Sepulvado was convicted for the murder of his six-year-old stepson, Wesley Allen Mercer.

A weekend crash involving a Red River Parish Sheriff’s patrol unit claimed the life of 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta. State Trooper Eddie Thomas says the unit was responding to an emergency with lights and siren activated when Winn, for reasons still under investigation, turned left and collided with the patrol vehicle.

Thomas urges drivers to follow traffic laws, stay alert, and always wear seat belts.

Sepulvado was convicted in 1992 in the DeSoto Parish murder of his six-year-old stepson, Wesley Allen Mercer. His attorney, Shawn Nolan, blasted the state, saying the thought of strapping him to a chair and forcing him to breathe toxic gas into his failing lungs is barbaric. Murrill says what he did to that six-year-old boy was even more barbaric.

Nolan says Sepulvado spent decades in prison repenting for his actions while becoming a devoutly religious man. Murrill says God will now have the final say.

Saturday morning Louisiana State Police responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash involving a Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol unit on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road. Trooper Eddie Thomas says the crash resulted in the death of 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta.

Thomas says Winn was traveling east in 2022 Nissan Rogue. For reasons still under investigation, Winn’s vehicle turned left and collided with the Tahoe.

Thomas urges drivers to follow traffic laws, stay alert, and always wear seat belts, as these precautions can make a critical difference in crash outcomes.

Landry says in his first year as attorney general in 2016, the state was facing a budget crisis and the governor at that time John Bel Edwards called on state agencies to find efficiencies. Landry says it led to a more productive Department of Justice…

The Saints have reportedly hired New Orleans native Terry Joseph as their defensive backs coach. The graduate of Shaw High School has been an assistant coach in college since 2006. Most recently he was the University of Texas’ defensive passing game coordinator.

The LSU women’s basketball team had its biggest road win of the year on Sunday as the Lady Tigers rallied from 16 down in the second quarter to beat Kentucky 65 to 58. It was win number 750 in Coach Kim Mulkey’s career and she didn’t know that she reached that milestone until after the game…

A Red River Parish Sheriff’s deputy is involved in a deadly crash over the weekend. State Police Trooper Eddie Thomas says the crash happened on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road, and the crash killed 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta.

In a budget presented to lawmakers, Governor Landry is proposing 100-million dollars for the new L-A Scholarship program, which is replacing the state’s current voucher program that’s receiving 46-million dollars in state money. House Insurance Committee Chairman Gabe Firment expects a push to expand the Fortified Roof Program, which offers grants of up to 10-thousand dollars to homeowners to strengthen their roofs against wind damage…

We’re less than two months away from the regular legislative session. It gets underway April 14th. House Insurance Chairman Gabe Firment from Grant Parish says this year, the priority issue is auto insurance – in particular the commercial auto insurance sector, where high costs are forcing businesses to park trucks and lay off workers.

Governor Landry’s proposed budget for next fiscal year does not contain the two-thousand-dollar teacher stipend educators received a couple of years ago.
