That’s Brigadier General Cindy Haygood with the Louisiana National Guard. She is the point person for the program that’s targeting Acadiana and southwest Louisiana. A recent LDH report found that about 20-percent of the state’s Medicaid patients visit emergency rooms on average 17 times per year, often for non-life threatening situations.

The Department of Insurance says lottery registration for the next round of Louisiana Fortify Homes Program grants will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. and closes Sunday at 8 p.m. Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says homeowners can apply for a chance to receive up to 10-thousand dollars in grants to upgrade their roofs.

Temple says to qualify for a Fortified Roof grant, the home needs to be your primary residence and located in the state’s coastal zone.

A state judge is allowing suspended law professor Ken Levy’s lawsuit against LSU to proceed. Levy believes his right to free speech, academic freedom and due process was violated when the university suspended him for using curse words and making unflattering comments about President Trump and Governor Jeff Landry. The judge has also asked the governor to turn over text messages, emails and any other documentation between Landry and LSU’s administration about Levy’s employment.

Temple says with over 18-hundred FORTIFIED roof grants issued since 2023, it’s making Louisiana more attractive to insurance companies to do business.

State Representative Chad Brown of Plaquemine says the state is overrun with alligators, and they’re starting to show up in neighborhoods.

Brown says the alligator population has been exploding throughout Louisiana over the last half-century.

That’s nearly three times the alligator population of Florida, which has the second biggest alligator population in the U.S. Brown says it’s getting to the point that it’s affecting everyone’s quality of life.

Wild reptile hunting seasons begins the last Wednesday in August in the East Zone and one week later in the West Zone. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is accepting public comment through May 1st.

The Department of Health is launching a pilot program aimed at reducing the unnecessary use of an emergency room by Medicaid recipients. Brigadier General Cindy Haygood says Acadian Health will launch an urgent mobile care unit to patients’ homes for treatment of non-life-threatening medical conditions.

Haygood says part of the program involves a clinic at home, which is a proactive visit scheduled in advance to see what’s in a home that may be driving the emergency room visits.

Haygood says from there, Acadian will work with the patient’s provider to come up with solutions.

This is a six-month program that will take place in the 12 parishes that comprise Acadiana and Southwest Louisiana.

Former Governor John Bel Edwards also opposed the death penalty. Pinsonat says one of Landry’s campaign promises was to resume executions…

Based on reports last year, 58 people are on death row. Landry says their death sentences have been affirmed by the courts and he’s calling for local DA’s to finalize their cases so the state can move forward with carrying out their penalties. In college basketball last night…McNeese improved to 13 and 1 in the Southland with a 67 to 51 win over East Texas A-and-M. Christian Shumate had 19 points and 14 rebounds.

Northwestern State snapped Nicholls four-game winning streak by beating the Colonels 72 to 60.

Jakevion Buckley had 35 points as Southeastern Louisiana defeated Houston Christian 69 to 60.

Southern suffered its first loss in SWAC play losing to Alabama State 82 to 81. Grambling upended Alabama A-and-M 72 to 61.

LSU women’s hoops is fifth in the latest AP Top 25 poll and will visit third ranked Texas on Sunday.

Super Bowl 59 is in the books. Mark Romig, the chief marketing officer of New Orleans and Company, says New Orleans literally welcomed the world to the city.

Romig says New Orleans will be bidding to host another Super Bowl, but the earliest that can happen is 2030. The next three Super Bowls will be in Santa Clara, Los Angeles and Atlanta, and the 2029 Super Bowl would coincide with Mardi Gras.

As for the game itself, the Philadelphia Eagles thoroughly dominated the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, to win their second Super Bowl in franchise history. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley celebrated a birthday yesterday by winning a title…

Kenner Police have uncovered additional evidence linking Danette Colbert of Slidell to the suspicious death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano. Manzano was found unresponsive in a Kenner hotel room and later pronounced dead. Police Chief Keith Conley says they seized three cell phones.

Security footage from Project NOLA shows Colbert with Manzano together in the Quarter and later leaving his hotel room alone. Pending further investigation and toxicology results, charges could be upgraded to homicide. Those tests could take several weeks.

A murder-suicide in Lafayette, and police there say the couple’s two children were present at the time. Corporal Ashley Wood says they exited the SUV, and one of them flagged down a passing driver for help.

The Eagles defense put together one of the greatest Super Bowl performances of all time as they kept Kansas City out of the end zone until late in the third quarter in a 40 to 22 win over the Chiefs. Former Saint Zack Baun returned to his old stomping grounds and intercepted a Patrick Mahomes pass late in the 2nd quarter to set up a touchdown that put the Eagles up 24-nothing at halftime.

Mahomes threw another interception that was returned for a touchdown. The man behind the Eagles game plan is defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio was the Saints linebackers coach for the famed Dome Patrol in the 1980s and 1990s. It was Fangio’s first Super Bowl title as a coordinator.

Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is expected to be the next Saints head coach. It’s unclear when an official announcement will take place. Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni wants Moore to stay and be part of the repeat effort, but Moore is still expected to take the Saints head coaching job.

Kailyn Gilbert scored 23 points as the LSU women’s basketball team defeated Tennessee for a second time this season, beating the Lady Vols 89 to 87. Gilbert entered the game in a shooting slump, making only eight of her last 53 shots. Gilbert says the extra time she spent in the gym paid off…

The Pelicans are at Oklahoma City tonight in the biggest mismatch of the night in the NBA.

Kenner Police release new evidence in last week’s death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano, who was in New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl.  Sean Richardson has more.

Lafayette Police say a murder-suicide happened on Johnston Street last night and the couple’s two children were present in the vehicle.  Corporal Ashley Wood says the two victims from New Iberia were found in a white SUV, 47-year-old Shentell Brown and her husband 60-year-old Kevin Brown

Wood says she died from her wounds and then Brown turns the gun on himself.

It was quite a performance for Super Bowl 59 champions Philadelphia Eagles and Mark Romig, the chief marketing officer of New Orleans and Company says the city has gotten great feedback on its performance in Super Bowl 59.

Louisiana was represented well on the field Sunday. A former Saint, Zack Baun returned to New Orleans as a Philadelphia Eagle and intercepted a Patrick Mahomes pass late in the 2nd quarter to set up a touchdown that put the Eagles up 24-nothing at halftime. Baun a former special teams player with the Saints, blossomed with the Eagles, earning Pro Bowl honors. He says he’s going to take time to decompress and reflect on the breakout season he had.

DeVonta Smith from Amite High School caught a 46-yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter that put the game away. And former Louisiana Tech Bulldog Milton Williams forced a fumble when he sacked Patrick Mahomes in the 4th quarter and recovered that fumble.

With the Saints, Baun was used almost exclusively on special teams. He blossomed with the Eagles, earning Pro Bowl honors and was a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year.

During Kendric Lamar’s halftime show, security personnel ran onto the field and tackled a man who was running around holding up a Sudanese-Palestinian flag. “Sudan” and “Gaza” were written on it. The NFL says the person detained was one of Lamar’s performers, but no one involved with the production knew that this individual would do this. The NFL is not pressing charged but he has now been banned from any future involvement with Super Bowl events.
