Two Colorado men were arrested for attempting to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars worth of tobacco and methamphetamine into a federal prison using a compressed air cannon. Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain says they were not successful.

18-year-old Jose Munoz, and 19-year-old Angel Gutierrez were arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted in the investigation and has placed a detainer on Munoz, as he is in the country illegally.

Winter is not over in north Louisiana.  NWS Meteorologist Matt Hemmingway says another Arctic blast is set to hit Louisiana, bringing below-freezing temperatures and possible winter precipitation, especially in northern areas.

In response to the loss of 300 permanent jobs when International Paper shuts down their containerboard plant in Campti, The Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Rapid Response Team is setting up Mobile Workforce Centers this Thursday and Friday to provide resources to help the displaced workers. The Team will set up in two locations from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Thursday and Friday: in Natchitoches at 716 Second Street and in Campti at 201 Edenborn Street. They will assist with training grants, resume writing, career counseling, application submission, and work registration. Information is available online at laworks.net.

One month from today Louisiana is set to complete the first death row execution in 15 years and the first by nitrogen gas.  Jacquelyn Stern with the Jewish Federation of New Orleans was among Jewish leaders in front of Touro Synagogue today. She says while opinions of capital punishment vary among those gathered, they’re all united in the stance that lethal gas should not be used as a method anywhere in the United States.

The grandparents of one of the victims killed in the Bourbon Street terror attack were killed over the weekend by an alleged drunk driver. Gretna Deputy Police Chief Jason DiMarco says  33-year-old Stephan Juarez hit Hubert and Victoria Gauthreaux as they were trying to leave their parked vehicle. He says Juarez is facing a slew of charges, all of which when combined could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the arrests, charging both men with attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine.

Hemmingway says the artic front will bring freezing temperatures starting Tuesday night in the low 20’s and upper teens.

Hemmingway says the cold front may linger for several days, delaying any return to warmer temperatures, but should warm up by the end of the week.

Grocery prices have surged over 25% since 2019. WalletHub’s Chip Lupo suggests prioritizing groceries in a budget, which ensures essential needs are met while limiting impulse buys.

One grocery item soaring in price is eggs, and that has some people looking at raising chickens to offset the cost. But is it worth it? Sean Richardson has more.

One research group says the lack of economic growth is the main culprit behind the out-migration that has plagued Louisiana since the 1980s. Dr. Allison Plyer, the chief demographer at The Data Center, says since 2000, Louisiana’s job market has grown by just two-percent, while the country as a whole has grown its job market by 20-percent in that same time frame. Plyer says the state needs to look into new economic opportunities to both keep people here and attract new residents.

Just when you thought we got rid of Old Man Winter, he’s coming back! Wind chills Wednesday night will be in the single digits for some parts of the state, and lows will get below freezing for most of the state Thursday morning. If you’re thinking about raising your own chickens in an effort to save money on eggs, think again. Not only does it cost money to raise chickens, but it takes a lot of effort as well. Lake Charles farmer Michelle Trahan says egg prices will eventually stabilize, making backyard farming less financially appealing in the long run.
