A flood watch is in effect for nearly all of South Louisiana though Friday night for Southwest areas and Saturday morning for Southeast Louisiana. National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Gilmore says the prolonged rain is increasing the chances of flooding.

The National Hurricane Center has now labeled the Gulf low responsible for the rain Invest 90L. Some models give the system a brief chance of strengthening into a tropical storm but wind shear along the Gulf Coast decreases those chances. An expected weekend cold front will push the system south, but some areas could get 10 inches of rain before the systems moves on.

The state fire marshal’s office says the deadly house explosion in Beauregard Parish over the weekend was likely caused by a propane leak. A 16-year-old boy was killed in the explosion in Ragley. Five others, including a two-year-old boy, remain hospitalized.

If you’re interested in becoming a State Trooper, you have until September 18th to apply to be a part of the 106th Cadet Class. Lt. Robert Fontenot says applicants need to meet certain requirements and the State Police Training Academy is hard. Applicants need to have the physical and mental capabilities to work in law enforcement.

By the end of that first year, the salary for rookie troopers will increase to 61-thousand dollars a year. In addition, troopers will be given a take-home vehicle, opportunities for overtime and a generous retirement package.

Pedestrian fatalities that hit alarming rates during the pandemic, were down to 147 in 2023, nearly a 20-perdent decrease, and bicycle fatalities dropped from 44 to 35 and crashes involving a driver with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher decreased to 195, a 13.3-percent drop from 2022. Fischer, however, says there was an increase in motorcycle fatalities…

Fischer says the seatbelt usage rate is the highest ever recorded in Louisiana at over 88-percent, a three-percent increase from the previous year…

Overall, the decline in highway deaths offers hope Louisiana’s roads are becoming safer, but it serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for responsible driving.

This all comes as a disturbance is churning up once again in the Gulf of Mexico along the Texas coast. The National Hurricane Center says it has a ten-percent chance of developing in the next seven days. It’s one of five disturbances currently in the Atlantic.

Gilmore says the prolonged rain is increasing the chances of flooding.

The 11-year-old accused of killing former interim Minden Mayor and City Councilman, Joe Cornelieus and his daughter, Keisha Miles has pleaded not guilty though his public defender. Judge Sherb Sentell accepted the plea and revoked the juvenile’s $500,000 bond meaning he will remain in custody until trial. He is currently being held in Ware Youth Center in Coushatta.

PETA has written a letter to Governor Landry urging him to abandon the idea of having LSU’s live tiger mascot return to Tiger Stadium as part of the pregame pageantry before a football game. Klayton Rutherford with the PETA foundation says tigers are normally solitary animals…

A traffic stop in Jefferson Davis Parish leads to a huge drug bust. Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes (“Sims”) says officers were led to a convenience store with a poker room inside, where they found Robert Moore.

One officer who Moore fought with had to be taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Longtime Death Valley PA announcer Dan Borne (bore-NAY) is taking a temporary leave of absence for health reasons. Bill Franques (fran-KEZ) will serve as interim PA announcer, and he says he will look to provide continuity.

Franques is no stranger to LSU fans; he’s been the PA voice of the baseball team for more than 30 years.

A retiree from Baton Rouge got quite the pleasant surprise yesterday – a check for more than 13-thousand dollars. State Treasurer John Fleming presented a check for $13,439.91 to Lawrence L’herisson (“Larson”) following a meeting of the St. George Rotary Club. L’herisson is very thankful for the efforts of Fleming and his office.

The Saints are preparing to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday in the regular season opener. Carolina is led by a first-year coach. During the offseason the Panthers spent 150-million dollars to improve their offensive line by signing guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. Lewis is a former LSU Tiger and Hunt played for the Ragin Cajuns.

PETA sent a strongly worded letter to Governor Landry following his request that LSU bring back its live mascot, Mike The Tiger, to Death Valley. LSU officially ended that long-standing tradition in 2017, and Klayton Rutherford with the PETA Foundation says that was the right move.

The Jennings Police Department says a traffic stop led to two narcotics arrests and the confiscation of 55-thousand lethal doses of Fentanyl. Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes says Michael Lynn Prudhomme and Robert Moore were the two men apprehended and Moore faces numerous charges including five counts of possession of a schedule two drug with the intention to sell…

A low-pressure area in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is providing the energy to produce the showers and thunderstorms and breezy conditions.  Southeast Louisiana is expected to see higher rain totals. The Houma area could see as much as eight inches of rain.

Investigators were led to a convenience store in Jennings with a poker room inside, and Police Chief Danny Semmes says officers found Robert Moore there with about 20-thousand dollars worth of drugs on his body, including fentanyl, crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

The Advocate is reporting another high-level official with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has left. DEQ’s budget chief Christian Griffiths is now with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Another top ranking official, Chandra Pidgeon, who left after only two weeks on the job, accused DEQ Secretary Aurelia Giacometto of harassing employees. Governor Landry has said the criticisms of Giacometto are from entrenched bureaucrats who resist change.
