The first inpatient mental health unit for pregnant and postpartum women in the state will start accepting patients from across Louisiana one week from today. Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge unveiled its new Perinatal Mental Health Unit today. Chief Nursing Officer Cheri Johnson says mental health is a significant concern among pregnant and postpartum women.

The lottery for licensed hunters to secure a permit for Louisiana’s first black bear hunt in 37 years opens Thursday. Louisiana Secretary of Wildlife and Fisheries Madison Sheahan notes that black bears were removed from the endangered species list in 2016.

A total of ten permits will be awarded.

Louisiana homeowners could see significant savings on property insurance through wind mitigation inspections, especially in the wake of increased premiums caused by recent hurricanes. Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says homes with strong wind mitigation measures, such as having a Fortified Roof, can qualify for discounts on their insurance premiums, as they are less likely to suffer extensive damage during storms.

Some insurance companies have been withdrawing from the Louisiana market altogether due to the high risk of hurricane damage.

Governor Landry issues an executive order banning the use of critical race theory in K-through-12 public schools. In his executive order, Landry says, in his words, teaching children that they are currently or destined to be oppressed or to be an oppressor based on their race or origin has no place in the state’s classrooms.

The 13th ranked LSU football team is getting ready for another big-time season opening matchup as they ‘ll face 23-ranked USC on Sunday night in Las Vegas. The Tigers have a history of playing tough opponents to kick off the season. It’s been reported USC tried to back out of this game. Coach Brian Kelly says playing challenging openers might not be the way to go in the future, especially if the SEC expands to a nine-game league schedule…

LSU is scheduled to open the 2025 and 2026 seasons against Clemson.

 

Today is cut down for the Saints, they have released last year’s punter Lou Hedley, leaving Australian and former Vanderbilt punter Matthew Hayball as the only punter on the roster.

 

Ben Woolridge has beat out Chandler Fields to be the Ragin Cajuns starting quarterback for Saturday night’s game against Grambling State. Coach Michael Desormeaux explained the decision when he met with reporters on Monday….

Homicides in New Orleans have fallen by nearly half from 2022, but according to the Times-Picayune, the number of murders in the French Quarter is at a 17-year-high. Seven people have been killed in the French Quarter this year and authorities do not have a firm answer on why there’s been an uptick in murders in the popular tourist destination.

Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order that seeks to enhance election integrity by preventing non-citizens from voting. Any state agency that provides assistance to an individual is also required to offer that person the opportunity to register to vote. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says this executive order says the agency must also inform the person they can’t vote if they are not a legal citizen

Governor Landry says 48 noncitizens have been removed for Louisiana voter rolls over the past two years. The League of of Women Voters of Louisiana says that’s a small number and they believe the executive order is unnecessary.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announces the black bear hunting lottery will open to state hunters on Thursday and run through September 25th. Just ten permits will be issued at the cost of 50 dollars. LDWF Secretary Madison Sheahan says the money will go towards black bear conservation efforts….

Keim says the other major Hurricanes to hit Louisiana between now and September first are Katrina, Gustav, and Ida.

Miguez has asked Attorney General Liz Murrell to issue a legal opinion regarding the university’s position that the three sites be kept gun-free. Miguez says UL Lafayette…

Miguez, a strong advocate for gun rights, argues that the university’s move infringes on Second Amendment rights and state laws that permit the carrying of firearms in public spaces.

The controversy centers on the university’s authority to impose these restrictions outside its main campus. Miguez argues that the gun-free zones could leave students and the public more vulnerable by disarming law-abiding citizens in areas that are not technically on university property.
