Ohio Senator J.D. Vance is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention tonight after being picked as former president Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential race. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says Vance was a great V-P pick and has a lot of things going for him.

Vance is the first millennial to be on a major party ticket.

Two of the candidates that qualified for the newly drawn 6th congressional district today are no strangers to politics. Democrat Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields, who served two terms in Congress in the 90s, and Republican Elbert Guillory who represented Opelousas in the state legislature.

Fields says there are parts of the district that haven’t used infrastructure funds to expand things like broadband. He says local governments don’t know how to access those dollars and he can help.

Guillory says in two years a lot of damage could be done in Congress. He referenced a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to vote in federal elections.

Congressman Garret Graves who currently represents the 6th district opted not to run for re-election because the district was redrawn at a disadvantage to him another term.

Those in favor of automated enforcement say traffic cameras keep the roads safer, but Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey points out that police are still able to pull drivers over for speeding. Cathey says, automated enforcement can’t stop human and drug trafficking.

The law allows drivers to appeal tickets from traffic cameras by proving there were outside issues involved, like if someone else was driving their car or if there were hazardous conditions. Additionally, Cathey says now if you get a ticket from a traffic camera….

A status conference hearing scheduled for today in suspended LSU running back Trey Holly’s criminal case has been pushed back to September. Holly’s attorney, Mike Small, says he and the prosecutor requested the change because they are still in the process of receiving evidence from the February shooting that injured two people in Union Parish…

A nine-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by an alligator in Lake Pontchartrain. The New Orleans Fire Department says the scary incident happened Sunday while the child was swimming with his family. The boy sustained laceration and puncture wounds. Fire officials credit the child’s father for acting quickly to fend off the six-foot alligator.

After eleven starts in the big leagues, former LSU star Paul Skenes started on the mound for the National League in last night’s Major League Baseball All Star game in Dallas. Skenes says his one season at LSU and playing at Alex Box Stadium helped him prepare for the moment…

The University of Louisiana System is expected to name Jimmy Genovese as the next president of Northwestern State. A formal vote will occur tomorrow. Genovese currently serves as a judge on the Louisiana Supreme Court. The 74-year-old is Northwestern State grad and Governor Landry has pushed for him to get the job.

Qualifying for the fall elections are underway. All six of Louisiana’s congressional seats are up for election and there’s an open seat on the Public Service Commission. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says being a P-S-C member is a coveted political job…

The underage gambling charges against former LSU receiver Kayshon Boutte have been dropped. He was arrested in January. The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s office says Boutte has completed a gambling awareness program and executed a self-ban. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says Boutte’s case will be a lesson learned for LSU and the NCAA, as they need to monitor college athletes when it comes to sports wagering.

Holly’s attorney Mike Small says he and the prosecution requested a delay because the state is still in the process of providing evidence from the shooting in Union Parish that injured two people. Small says he wants to clear Holly of the gun charge, so he can play football for the Tigers…

A state judge has sentenced Charlene Henderson of Shreveport to life in prison after she shot her husband and then doused his body with gasoline. The brutal murder took place in May of 2022. Prosecutors say when officers arrived on the scene, there was an overwhelming smell of gasoline and crime scene photos showed ashes covering Larry Clark’s body.
