A 9-year-old boy was attacked by an alligator while swimming in Lake Pontchartrain on Sunday. A three-year-old boy from Hammond is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face. That’s according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office who says the three-year-old got a hold of the gun and accidentally shot himself in the face. Emergency services were called immediately, and the boy was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery. Authorities have since closed the area for swimming and are working with LDWF to locate and capture the alligator. This incident has raised concerns about safety in areas where humans and wildlife habitats overlap.

Shirley reminds the public to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings while swimming in natural bodies of water, especially during peak alligator activity periods.

Former Opelousas lawmaker, Republican Elbert Guillory says he’s running because he believes the government has stopped protecting Americans, specifically those in the 6^th district which stretches from Caddo to East Baton Rouge Parish.

Guillory says the education system is a disaster and crime is negatively impacting everyone in the state.

Because Congressman Clay Higgins is attending the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, New Iberia Senator Blake Miguez filed on his behalf. Higgins is seeking a fifth term in DC. Miguez says Higgins is a great asset to southwest Louisiana.

Miguez says Higgins has the support of former President Trump, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and Governor Landry.  Miquez says Higgins wants to continue his work on behalf of residents in the state’s 3rd Congressional district.

As of Wednesday evening, Higgins will be challenged by another Republican, and two Democrats on the November 5^th ballot.

U-L Lafayette Athletics Director Dr. Bryan Maggard has signed a contract extension through June 2029. Maggard, who joined the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2017, says his challenge for the future is navigating NIL deals.

The extension comes a few weeks after Ragin’ Cajun softball legend Alyson Habetz was brought on as head coach. Maggard believes head coaches are the most important hires that athletic directors can make, and he’s more than pleased with the coaches he’s assembled.

Maggard says he’s overseeing about $20 million in capital projects, including a new football stadium. That, combined with NIL and TV deals, means fundraising will be a crucial part of the Ragin’ Cajun’s future. A new state law makes it easier to appeal traffic citations from speeding cameras. The law allows drivers to appeal tickets from traffic cameras by proving there were outside issues involved, like if someone else was driving their car or if there were hazardous conditions. Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey says now if you get a ticket from a traffic camera….
