Former nursing home owner Bob Dean has avoided jail time after pleading no contest to 15 counts related to his failed evacuation plan of nursing home residents to a warehouse in Tangipahoa Parish during Hurricane Ida in 2021. Dean was sentenced to three years probation, Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed disappointment Dean was not sent to prison for several years. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says Dean did not show criminal intent, even though several elderly people died as a result of his plan…

Two adults and two children were killed in a two-car crash Monday morning on U-S 61 near I-310 in St. Charles Parish. 33-year-old Mathieu Christophe of Laplace was struck head-on by 38-year-old Benjamin Alexis of Chalmette driving in the wrong direction. Trooper Jacob Pucheu (pee-shoo)…

Christophe, Alexis, and his two sons, 8-year-old Benjamin Alexis III and 5-year-old Charles Alexis both from Chalmette were killed in the crash. One child is in critical condition.  Christophe and Alexis were pronounced dead at the scene.

Pucheu says the children in the car were wearing seatbelts but were not properly restrained in a child car seat or booster seat.

As Hurricane Ida was racing towards southeast Louisiana Dean decided to send more than 800 residents from seven of his nursing homes to a warehouse not equipped to house that many people. Multiple people died, and coroners deemed five of the deaths were storm-related.

Attorney General Liz Murrell expressed disappointment Dean did not get at least five years in jail. Borghardt says Judge Brian Abels’ reasoning could be because these were gross negligent crimes and didn’t show criminal intent…

Borghardt says Dean’s age could also be a factor in the sentence…

Dean has also been ordered to pay 358-thousand dollars in restitution to the Louisiana Department of Health and one million dollars in civil fines to the Department of Justice.

New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, says fortunately it was caught early and she’s undergoing treatment. Even though she has annual mammograms, Freeman says she found a lump just after the session ended and quickly contacted her primary care physician and gynecologist.

She says a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and has already undergone her first round of chemotherapy.  Freeman says the treatment regime for the type of breast cancer she has is chemo, surgery, and then radiation.

While she expects to be in treatment for 10 months to a year, Freeman said she will continue to work as much as possible and represent her district. When she’s unable to attend neighborhood and committee meetings her legislative assistant will keep her updated.

Freeman encourages women to have routine mammograms and do monthly self-exams. Because it was detected early, she’s optimistic about her treatment plan. She says it’s important to be an advocate for your care and when you find a lump or notice a change in your breast you talk to your doctor to rule anything out.

A traffic accident in St. Charles Parish killed four people, two children, two adults, and a child is in critical condition. It happened around 6 this morning. Troopers say the initial investigation revealed 33-year-old Mathieu Christophe of Laplace was driving south on US 61 near the I-310 overpass and 38-year-old Benjamin Alexis II of Chalmette was driving north in the southbound lane and the vehicles struck head-on. Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene. Alexis’ two sons, ages 8 and 5 were also killed.

State Police say 64-year-old Tommy Moseley’s cycle ran off the road, hit a culvert, and went into a ditch on LA 441 near Herman Hutchinson Road in Holden. Troopers say he was not wearing a helmet when the crash happened.

He was charged after sending 843 nursing home patients to a warehouse in Tangipahoa Parish during Hurricane Ida. The conditions there led to the deaths of several elderly individuals. Judge Brian Abels sentenced Dean to twenty years deferred with three years of probation. In a statement, Attorney General Liz Murrill said they asked that Dean be sentenced to a minimum of 5 years in prison and not be given only probation. And though she respects the judge has discretion, she still believes Dean should serve time in prison.
