A new survey on state crime shows 72% of Louisiana residents think crime has increased the past few years, 10% less than last year’s survey. Dr. Michael Henderson, who directed the 2024 Louisiana Survey, says findings show Louisianians are determined to do something about crime.

You may want to pay extra attention to your mailbox because the Louisiana State Treasury is mailing checks to residents with unclaimed property. Treasurer John Fleming says since his department began sharing information with the Department of Revenue through a 2018 legislative act, finding the rightful owner has been much easier.

Pelican Institute Economist Vance Ginn says Louisiana ranks in the bottom 10 in the nation in population growth and unemployment rate. But he says lawmakers have already taken one step to improve the state’s job climate by passing a law reforming the state’s occupational license law.

He says getting more people into the workforce will result in more revenue for the state.

Though most Louisiana residents were not victims of crime over the past year, 58% said they personally know a victim of property crime and 44% know someone who was attacked or threatened. Dr. Michael Henderson directed the survey.

Speaking of crime a new study ranking the most dangerous NFL stadiums to visit is out and despite the seemingly never-ending rise in Crescent City crime, the Caesar’s Superdome did not come near the top of the list. In fact, the home of the Denver Broncos, Empower Field at Mile High was found to be the NFL’s most dangerous stadium to visit. There are 32 NFL stadiums. The Dome wasn’t even in the top five.

Treasurer John Fleming says when he was sworn in there was a backlog of 2,500 claims. That’s now down to 500. And he says even if you don’t receive a check in the next few days you can still visit their website to see if you’re due some cash.

The Tigers have added 4 new transfers, but Johnson and his staff are also expecting reinforcements in the form of Junior College commits. Pearl River left-hander Connor Ware struck out 28 batters in 17 innings this season. Johnson expects him to make an immediate impact…

Cowan was one of the most coveted prospects in the portal and will bring his talents to Baton Rouge after posting a 10-and-2 record and 3.35 ERA with the Terriers. The All-So-Con pitcher will look to compete for a starting slot with the Tigers next season. There have also been rumors he’ll be joined by Wofford freshman Camden Wicker. The righty logged a 4.28 ERA and started most of the year for the Terriers but has not made an official commitment.

LSU baseball has been rebuilding its roster after losing nine players to the transfer portal and more players are expected to leave after the 2024 MLB Draft. The Tigers have received commitments from different talented portal players including many successful junior college players like Pearl River left hander Connor Ware. Ware struck out 28 batters in 17 innings of work last season and LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson says he can have an immediate impact for the Tigers.

Johnson is also recruiting Blinn College Outfielder Tanner Reaves. Reaves hit 20 home runs his freshman season with Blinn and Johnson says that he’s ready for the versatile player to play for the purple and gold.

And Zac Cowan of Wofford has also committed to LSU. The sophomore ace for Wofford finished this season with a 10 and 2 record, a 3.35 ERA, and 124 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched.

In a close back and forth game the Boston Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks 106 to 99. The Celtics are now up three games on the Mavs and are one win away from their first championship since 2008.

Angel Reese had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Chicago Sky in a losing effort to the Connecticut Suns, 83 to 75 last night. The Chicago Sky are now 4 and 7 on the year.

The LSU Lady Tigers will participate in year two of the ACC/SEC Challenge and this time the Tigers opponent will be Stanford. Last year, LSU hosted Virginia Tech and collected LSU Head Coach Kim Mulkey’s 700th win, which made her the fastest coach in college basketball to do so.

And even though the Tigers are not in Omaha this year, you can still defend the Tigers Jello Shot Challenge Championship remotely. The survey says 84% of state residents support sending state police to help local law enforcement in high crime areas and 56% support increasing spending on local law enforcement. However, Henderson says Louisianians also support nontraditional means of law enforcement.

Though most Louisiana residents were not victims of crime over the past year, 58% personally know a victim of property crime and 44% know someone who was attacked or threatened. Henderson says this has an impact on how every resident, even those who were not victims, view crime in the state.

Catcher Blaise Priester began his college career at LSU before the former Denham Springs High School star transferred to Meridian JUCO. Priester batted .377 with 14 homers for the Eagles this season and Johnson says he’s a totally different player…

The Louisiana Supreme Court reversed its previous “lookback window” decision after State Attorney General Liz Murrill requested a rehearing. Murrill says it’s Justice for victims and that child victims deserve their day in court. The Archdiocese of New Orleans says they respect the court’s decision and that it’s always been their intention to compensation survivors of sexual abuse.

The Louisiana Department of Health is reminding everyone to take precautions against mosquito bites this summer that could carry the West Nile Virus. State Epidemiologist Theresa Sokol says while 80 percent of people show no symptoms some can develop West Nile fever, flu-like symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rashes.

She recommends using an EPA-approved mosquito repellant to protect yourself.

The first tropical wave of the 2024 Hurricane season has formed over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, and while it’s not an immediate threat to Louisiana LSU Climatologist Barry Keim says it’s forecasted to bring torrential rain to southern Florida.

NOAA has predicted 8 to 13 hurricanes this year for the Atlantic season with 4 to 7 forecasted to be major hurricanes.

Cowan is the third addition to LSU Coach Jay Johnson’s transfer class already featuring South Florida right-handed pitcher Chandler Dorsey and Indiana State slugger Luis Hernandez. Hernandez announced his commitment to the Tigers yesterday on the heels of a 23-home run season in Indiana. He finished with a .359 batting average and 76 RBI helping the Sycamores to a top 20-ranked season.

Nicholls head coach Mike Silva is heading to Jonesboro, Arkansas to coach the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Silva had a very successful two years at Nicholls where he led the Colonels to two NCAA regionals and was named the 2023 Southland Coach of the Year.

The Saints began mandatory minicamp yesterday as stars such as Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore returned to the practice field. Players and fans got early looks at a revamped offense under new Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak. The former 49ers assistant’s scheme will feature much more motion and creativity which Kamara says he’s excited for…

Former LSU Beach Volleyball stars Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss were officially selected to represent Team USA at the Paris Olympics this Summer. The duo is currently ranked 2nd in the world and will have the chance to bring home the gold playing under the Eiffel Tower. Nuss says it’s a dream come true…
