Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry gave today as the deadline to have an approved Congressional map so her office can prepare for the fall Congressional elections. But federal judges have rejected two different maps approved by state lawmakers and Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill is seeking direction from the U-S Supreme Court.

According to the Vaughn family, a Bunkie man has been sentenced to six years in prison after he plead guilty to vehicular homicide. State Police say Christopher McCoy was legally intoxicated when he drove off the road and struck a tree in Avoyelles Parish, killing his passenger Lauren Vaughn. Lauren’s mom pleads with drivers to be sober when they are behind the wheel…

The Skyline of Lake Charles is changing as the tall, mirrored Hertz building is finally coming down. It has been four years since the building sustained significant damage in Hurricane Laura leaving multiple broken glass panes to greet travelers on I-10. Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says taxpayers will not have to foot the bill for the demolition…

Hunter says the city tried to work with private developers on a plan to repair and renovate the building, but the only viable option is to tear the skyscraper down. Demolition will likely occur in August or September.

The NFL releases its schedule tonight. It comes down at 7 PM. But of course there have already been leaks. The Black and Gold will open the season by hosting division rival Carolina on September eighth. New Orleans will host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3. And Sean Payton will make his return to the Caesar’s Superdome in Week 8. New Orleans will host Payton’s Broncos for Thursday night football. The Saints will reportedly appear on Monday night football in Week 16, against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field.

Also, the NFL has announced the Netflix will stream the two games the league will have on Christmas Day this season. The Ravens versus the Texas is reportedly one of those games.

Angel Reese makes her debut in the WNBA tonight as the Chicago Sky face the Dallas Wings in Big “D.” In two preseason games, the Bayou Barbie averaged 13 points and seven rebounds a contest. Tonight’s game will not be televised.

Baseball America released its latest NCAA Tournament projections and they have the Tigers as one of the last four teams out. LSU is looking for at least a series victory against Ole Miss. That series begins tomorrow night at Alex Box.

Baseball America has Louisiana Tech as a two-seed in the Knoxville Regional. Bulldogs star Ethan Bates has been named a two-way player of the year semifinalist. The Arkansas native has 16 home runs and 67 RBIs. He’s also the team’s closer and has 14 saves. The Bulldogs close out the regular season with a three-game series starting tomorrow at Liberty.

Baseball America also has the Ragin Cajuns as a two seed and they have U-L Lafayette in the College Station Regional. U-L Lafayette will host South Alabama for a series beginning tomorrow night. The Jaguars beat Southeastern Louisiana 13 to 1 last night.

One other college baseball score. Chase Keeton’s two-run-double in the tenth inning gave McNeese a seven-to-six win over Texas State. Keeton is a senior so it was last swing at Joe Miller Ballpark.

There is still about 12-thousand Entergy customers without power as a result of Monday’s severe weather that’s responsible for three fatalities. More severe weather could impact the state Friday and flooding rains are a concern beginning Thursday afternoon for central and southwest Louisiana.

Christopher McCoy of Bunkie has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in the death of Lauren Vaughn. She was a 22 year-old nursing student from Alexandria. The incident happened on Good Friday in 2023. Bridget Vaughn, Lauren’s mother, says McCoy was sentenced to six years in prison.

State Police says McCoy’s blood alcohol level was .15 at the time of the fatal crash. Lauren Vaughn was a passenger in his vehicle when it ran off the road.

If you are unable to file today, you still have to submit an estimated payment, but the act of filing can wait another six months as the state now offers an automatic extension. Legislation that would prohibit the sale of consumable hemp products that contain THC is closer to final legislative passage. In 2022, Louisiana lawmakers approved a THC-legalization bill. But Shreveport Senator Thomas Pressly says that opened the door for the sale of products in Louisiana that contains enough THC to get a person high and several of these products are marketed towards children. Today is the deadline to file your state income taxes. Of course, Louisiana does have an automatic six-month extension, but that’s an extension on filing not payment. So if you think or know you’ll owe taxes, that needs to be paid today. Connor Brown is a certified tax preparer for LaPorte CPAs and Business Advisors and says there are several ways you can get that done.

A bill that would make the sale of any hemp product containing THC illegal in Louisiana is one step closer to becoming law. It passed the House Criminal Justice Committee by a vote of 7 to 5. Some lawmakers are concerned THC can get a person high and are concerned that they’re being marketed to children. CEO of Crescent Canna defended the hemp market in Louisiana.

The bill has already passed the Senate and heads next to the full House.

The owner of a James Beard nominated restaurant in Gretna is speaking out on social media about a police officer he says has been “terrorizing” his customers in with traffic citations. According to Nola.com, Marlon Williams, the owner of Chicken’s Kitchen, said he noticed an uptick in traffic stops outside his business around six weeks ago…but Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson has said the restaurant is simply on a problematic stretch of roadway and authorities are trying to make it safer.

The NFL releases its schedule tonight. It comes down at 7 PM. We already know the teams the Saints will play, but we get dates and times tonight. According to Sharp Football Analysis, the Saints have the fifth-easiest strength of schedule.

Nola-dot-com’s Jeff Duncan reports New Orleans will open the preseason schedule by visiting the Cardinals and then play the 49ers in San Francisco. There will also be joint practices against the defending NFC Champs before that game against San Fran. Remember the Saints will hold training camp at the University of California-Irvine.

ESPN has announced LSU’s season opener against the USC Trojans in Las Vegas will kick off at 6:30 PM on Sunday September first.

South Alabama slugged Southeastern Louisiana 13 to 1 last night. The Jaguars will begin a series against the 21st-ranked Ragin Cajuns tomorrow night. U-L Lafayette needs one win to claim an outright Sun Belt Conference regular season title.

Southern Miss defeated Ole Miss seven to four. LSU begins a regular season series against the Rebels on Thursday at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers need to sweep to get to 13 SEC wins, which is the number likely needed for LSU to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A Senate approved bill that would make the sale of consumable hemp products containing THC illegal has passed the House Criminal Justice Committee.  Sean Richardson has more on the debate.

The College of Engineering and Science and the Institute of Micro-manufacturing at Louisiana Tech University have been awarded 1.3 million dollars by the United States Air Force. That comes in the form of a Department of Defense grant which will allow researchers to enhance military technology, diagnose any issues and advance the lifespan of that technology.
