After a tense debate, the Terrebonne Parish School Board made the difficult decision to close three elementary schools, which will send students, teachers and staff to other schools next school year.

ULM will hold a press conference at 11 AM today to introduce Bryant Vincent as its new football coach.

The state transportation department has pushed back the deadline for executing the public-private partnership for widening Interstate 10 in Lake Charles including the construction of a new two-point-one billion dollar bridge. DOTD spokesperson John Guidroz…

The project needs legislative approval and the House Transportation Committee voted against it as several lawmakers objected to use of tolls. The new legislature will have until February 1st to vote on the proposal.

Earlier this year Niagara Bottling announced plans to build a 160-million dollar production facility in Ponchatoula. Louisiana Workforce Commission spokesperson Regine Williams says Niagara Bottling is holding a job fair today and tomorrow in Hammond as they plan to create 70 new jobs…

The Louisiana Supreme Court says it will hear a sexual abuse lawsuit against the Diocese of Lafayette that claims the church knew Reverend Kenneth Morvant acted inappropriately with altar boys. The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by Doug Bienvenu who says he was abused when he was nine years old. Morvant died in 2002.

Property insurance premiums are rising for many homeowners and the same goes for school systems. Louisiana School Board Association lobbyist Dannie Garrett says some districts have seen a 30 to 50-percent increase in year-to-year property insurance costs, but state funding for schools has been relatively flat…

A plan to use public and private dollars, including toll money, to build a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge is still alive as a new deadline of February first has been set for legislative approval. DOTD spokesperson John Guidroz says they want to give the new administration and Legislature a chance to weigh in…

There’s a chance Saints quarterback Derek Carr will not be healthy enough to make the start this Sunday against the Panthers. ULM is set to announce Bryant Vincent as its new head football coach today. Vincent was the offensive coordinator at New Mexico this past season and he took an offense that was dead last in the FBS to total offense and this year they were ranked 39th. The Lobos red zone offense was ranked as the 14th best in the country.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech grinded out a 56-49 win over Stephen F Austin last night to improve to 7-and-2 on the season. Isaiah Crawford had a game-high 19 points and Daniel Batcho recorded his fourth double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Jacob Wilson scored a career-high 16 points as the Warhawks dribbled past Champion Christian 110 to 63. And McNeese dominated Mississippi University for Women 92-23 to improve to 8-and-2. Coach Will Wade’s ten game suspension is over.

The Pelicans will play the Lakers tomorrow night in Las Vegas in the semifinals of the NBA’s in-season tournament.

Republican John Nickelson has won his lawsuit challenging the results of the November 18th Caddo Parish sheriff’s election. Nickelson lost the race by one vote to Democrat Henry Whitehorn, but a judge has ruled a new election should take place because there were 11 questionable votes counted….

Political analyst Scott Hughes says unless the ruling is overturned on appeal, the re-do election will take place in March.

The state department of transportation will give the next Legislature an opportunity to approve a public-private partnership that would result in the construction of a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. Many Louisiana residents have felt the financial squeeze from rising property insurance rates, it’s also a growing problem for school systems. Dannie Garrett is a lobbyist for the Louisiana School Board Association and he says premiums are going up and funding from the state is not matching the increase in insurance cost…

John Nickelson has won his lawsuit requesting a special election after challenging the result of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s November 18th runoff election. He lost to Henry Whitehorn by one vote. Political Analyst Scott Hughes says retired Judge Joe Bleich identified at least 11 illegal votes.

Of the eleven votes, two people voted twice, at least five mail-in votes were invalid, and four were cast by unqualified voters.  Hughes expects Whitehorn to appeal the court’s decision to overturn the election.

In a statement released Tuesday, Whitehorn expressed his disappointment:

“Overturning an election because the winner won by one vote is essentially saying, every vote matters, except if the win is by one.”

Hughes says the earliest an election can be held is next spring.

Louisiana Homeowners are not the only ones feeling the pinch of climbing property insurance premiums. Louisiana School Boards Association Lobbyist, Dannie Garrett says it’s becoming a struggle for school districts

Garret says expenses associated with school buildings are schools’ second largest expense and insurance rates continue to rise. He would like to see the legislature address property insurance reform but Garret says, districts, especially rural ones need help…

Even School Districts with a strong industrial presence, which beefs up the tax base, are beginning to have trouble keeping up while more rural parishes are struggling and need help from the state. But while insurance rates have continued to climb, state funding of schools has been flat, says Garret.

The original deadline of December 3rd has been extended for 60 days. State lawmakers rejected the proposal over the $2.1 billion price tag and the burden tolls would place on motorists. A new administration will be sworn in on January 8th and Guidroz says the bridge connecting Lake Charles and Westlake is critical infrastructure…

In October, after the House Transportation Committee rejected the plan, interim State Transportation Secretary Eric Kalivoda stated DOTD would focus on rehabbing the existing bridge in the meantime. Guidroz says the deadline extension can be seen as a lifeline for the project…

An estimated 90,000 vehicles cross the Calcasieu River Bridge daily.

A judge calls for a new sheriff’s election in Caddo Parish after Republican John Nickelson challenged the results when he lost the run-off and recount by one vote to Democrat Henry Whitehorn. Political Analyst Scott Hughes says the judge identified at least 11 illegal votes.

State Police have arrested 19-year-old Isabelle Nguyen after the fatal hit-and-run crash that killed 66-year-old cyclist Henry Savoie of Larose last week. Trooper Ross Brennan says the crash happened on LA Highway 1 in Lafourche Parish. Nguyen is charged with hit and run driving with serious injury or death…

Vincent most recently served as Offensive Coordinator at the University of New Mexico and before that he was the interim head coach at UAB in 2022. Retired Louisiana Supreme Court Justice E. Joseph Bleich has declared the November Caddo Parish sheriff’s run-off election void and ordered a new run-off. Bleich’s ruling in the Lawsuit filed by candidate, John Nickelson who lost to Henry Whitehorn by one vote states, “it was proven beyond any doubt that there were at least 11 illegal votes cast and counted” and it is “legally impossible to know what the true vote should have been.” Whitehorn’s team is expected to appeal they have has until 9:56 AM Friday.

Three separate house fires have claimed the lives of three people in 2 different Louisiana parishes in the last 2 days. The State Fire Marshall spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says they are investigating the 3, one in St. Tammany.

There will be a new run-off election for Caddo Parish sheriff as the November 18 run-off election has been declared void. Retired Louisiana Supreme Court Justice E. Joseph Bleich made the ruling in the election lawsuit filed by Caddo Parish sheriff candidate, John Nickelson who lost to Henry Whitehorn by one vote. The ruling states, “it was proven beyond any doubt that there were at least 11 illegal votes cast and counted” and it is “legally impossible to know what the true vote should have been.” Whitehorn’s team is expected to appeal this decision.

State Police have arrested a teenager driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash that occurred last week involving a bicyclist in Lafourche Parish. Trooper Ross Brennan says while Troopers were at the scene of the crash, 19-year-old Isabelle Nguyen went to a sheriff’s sub station where she was interviewed about her involvement in the crash. Brennan says Nguyen should have contacted authorities immediately

Staiano says participants will be under the guidance of their physician and have access to a nutritionist. And while they recognize the program isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, a social worker is also assigned to the family…

The outreach study among minority children and those in rural backgrounds is in conjunction with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Staiano says both Louisiana and Tennessee have similar obesity rates, especially among minorities and children in rural areas.

In the US about 22 percent of Hispanic and 20 percent of Black children have obesity compared to 14 percent of white children. In rural areas, the childhood obesity rate increases to 22 percent.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has started preliminary site work for the new $361 million dollar Jimmie Davis Bridge connecting Bossier and Caddo Parishes. Spokesperson Erin Buchanan says drivers may notice workers clearing debris and vegetation near the foot of the bridge.

Buchanan says major construction on the four-lane bridge is still about a year away as design work continues. She says the design phase also includes transforming the existing structure into a linear park.
