Northwestern Head Coach Brad Laird spoke of the respect the staff and team had for Ronald Caldwell. Caldwell was recently honored as Northwestern’s Student Athlete of the Month. Northwestern has canceled Saturday’s football game against Nichols State.

 

Good news in the battle against saltwater intrusion impacting drinking water systems in southeast Louisiana. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers released an updated forecast today and the saltwater wedge is no longer expected to reach Orleans or Jefferson Parishes. An underwater levee constructed by the Corps is helping to hold back the salt water.

Northwestern Louisiana State has cancelled Saturday’s football game against Nicholls State after an overnight tragedy. 21-year-old Ronald Caldwell, a junior safety on the football team was found dead during the overnight hours with several gunshot wounds at an apartment complex on University Parkway. Police received a call around 1 a.m. this morning of several gunshots in the area. The Junior Safety from Texas lived at the complex and investigators are interviewing his roommates and others. Anyone with information is urged to call Natchitoches Crimestoppers.

Caldwell was honored as Northwestern’s Student-Athlete of the Month this month. His Head coach Braid Laird spoke of the respect players and staff had for Caldwell.

Louisiana 2023 high school class ACT scores increased for the first time since 2016. The state’s average composite score of 18 point two was up from 18 point one last year. Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley says it’s encouraging to see the academic improvement

Greely says Caldwell died at the scene. This Saturday’s game between Northwestern State and Nicholls has been canceled.

Caldwell had not played any games this season after a preseason injury. He started ten games last year and was a member of the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Nearly 32 percent of Louisiana’s students hit the reading benchmark, up from 31 percent last year. Twenty-two percent met the science benchmark, up from 21% the previous year. Brumley says the Louisiana Department of Education will work with schools to make sure students are ready for the ACT

Louisiana’s students also showed a slight improvement in English. Brumley says more work needs to be done…

Louisiana is one of nine states that saw an increase in average composite scores, but the state’s  composite score is among the lowest in the nation, with only six states recording lower average scores.

Natchitoches Police Corporal John Greely says anyone who has information on the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Ronald Caldwell is urged to call Natchitoches Crimestoppers…

The Philadelphia Phillies handled the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Former LSU great Aaron Nola was a key factor for the Phillies success as he threw 5 and 2⁄3 ‘s innings with nine strikeouts and only one RBI allowed against the top team in the MLB this season . Nola improves to 2 and 0 this postseason with the win and the Phillies can advance to the NLCS for the second straight season with a win tonight.

One of the key components of LSU’s new defensive scheme has been the transition of secondary swiss army knife Sage Ryan. The former Lafayette Christian Star has played safety, nickel corner, and in the win over Missouri started at cornerback. Ryan is not afraid to take on this new role and credits many people for his successful transition.

The NBA’s preseason began Tuesday and the Pelicans opened with a loss to the Orlando Magic in the Smoothie King Center. Although the game was a loss for the Pelicans, Head Coach Willie Green is optimistic after the speed and space that the Pelicans created for Zion Williamson during the 5 and a half minutes the star got play center. The change helped the Pelicans double their lead in the first quarter.

A school specifically designed for kindergarten through fifth-grade students on the Autism Spectrum in Monroe will begin the enrollment process next month. The Academy of Collaborative Education has received approval from BESE. ACE Director Joellen Freeman says the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder is high and ACE added therapeutic interventions and therapies that autistic students need.

39-year-old Joey Clement of Thibodaux was sentenced yesterday for the fatal DWI car crash that killed three Nicholls State University students two years ago. Clement will serve 85 years in prison.

At least 22 Americans are among those killed in the attacks on Israel. Barry Weinstein, Rabbi for Temple Sinai in Lake Charles who has family living in Israel says he is praying deeply for Israel’s safety.  Civilians young and old are among at least 1200 killed.

A new public charter school designed for children on the Autism Spectrum has received approval to from BESE. The Academy of Collaborative Education will begin accepting applications next month. ACE Director Joellen Freeman says ACE will be a tuition-free public charter school.

The school will house two classrooms per grade and a total of 96 students. The school will serve kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Monroe starting in July of 2024.
