A new report on public school teacher salaries shows one reason why teacher pay falls below the Southern Regional Average is that experienced teachers do not make much more than beginning teachers. According to researchers, this year’s ‘Dead Zone’ in the northern Gulf of Mexico is the sixth smallest in 36 years. The decrease is due to water temperatures and low water flow on the Mississippi River. LSU Professor Nancy Rabalais says the waterway is moving less water and carrying fewer nutrients.

Erwin says the report shows that starting pay for teachers is the second highest in the South, but the overall statewide average is among the lowest. Erwin says that’s because the state continues to give out across the board pay raises…
