The field is set for the October 14th elections and though over half of those who qualified this round are running unopposed, there are several competitive legislative races out there. La-Politics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says a 1/3 turnover is expected in the House and Senate side next term which is unprecedented. He said some lawmakers quit mid-term, while others decided to seek other offices…:

We’ve been reporting several fires over the past few days and the State Fire Marshal’s Office is posting reminders about the state-wide burn ban that’s been in effect since August 7th. Authorities say a blaze in East Feliciana Parish burned around 75 acres on Sunday and they are still trying to determine what sparked that one.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat. The entire state is once again looking at dangerously high temperatures today as yet another excessive heat warning is in place.

New Orleans’ new quarterback Derek Carr’s offense dominated in the Saints first pre-season game of the season, coming away with a 26-24 victory over Kansas City. With the kids back in school, health experts are offering some advice to families to help everyone get settled back into a routine. Children’s Hospital New Orleans Pediatrician Dr. Anthony Hudson says the most important thing to do is establish what time to go to bed..:

A man from Independence is booked amid allegations he was responsible for starting a massive fire in Washington Parish last Thursday night. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture says 24-year-old Kenneth Beaubouf was tending to a fire while camping and left it unattended where it later spread into the woods nearby. He is booked with burn ban violation and fire raising with criminal negligence.

School is already back in full swing and transitioning from summer vacation to a new school year may be a challenge. But health care experts have some advice for parents to help with a smooth transition. Children’s Hospital New Orleans Pediatrician Dr. Anthony Hudson says if they’ve been lax with bedtime, it’s time to re-adjust sleep schedules…

Hudson says nutrition plays an important role in a child’s mood, cognition, and well-being. He suggests feeding foods that are higher in protein and fats to give the kids energy for a longer period of time.

But La-Politics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says there are still plenty of competitive legislative races around the state.

Alford says the one-third turnover was not anticipated to be that high for the legislature.  He says if you look at those who are term-limited the turnover percentage would be much lower. Alford says several lawmakers have quit mid-term, who decided at the last minute not to run, and some are seeking other offices.

So, from a party perspective, Alford says Republicans are poised to dominate both chambers of the legislature. And after years of serious gains, he says it looks like the GOP is only going to build on that even further.

And Alford says it depends on who’s elected governor and how that will factor in who becomes Speaker of the House and President of the Senate. For the last eight years, he says lawmakers have been working towards independence to elect their own leaders.

The Republican veterinarian from Covington began his first term in 2008 and became the first Republican to hold the post. Strain says moving forward, he plans to resolve issues to make the agriculture industry work for farmers statewide…

Louisiana Christian University in Pineville is holding an active shooter training for faculty and staff this week ahead of the fall semester. Chief of Campus Security, John Dauzat (Doe-zaunt) says the safety of students and staff is their number one priority.

In conjunction with training, Dauzat says they are using the RAVE Guardian App. He says the app is required for all students and staff and it’s an alert system to notify them of any potential security threats at the school.

Dauzat says they train their faculty first on how to respond to a number of different active shooter scenarios.

The training is held as part of the faculty’s fall workshop.

The Saints beat the Kansas City Chiefs 26-24 in week one of the preseason backed behind a quick start from the offense. The Saints took an early 17-0 lead with nearly all of the first team taking the snaps, but coach Dennis Allen thinks everything after those drives could have been better.

New quarterback Derek Carr came in for only one possession with the Saints but 6 for 8 with 70 yards a touchdown to end his day, and says it feels great with his new team.

A position battle for the team right now is for the second cornerback spot, and one of those members, Alontae Taylor, gave up a big reception that ultimately led to a Chiefs touchdown, but Allen says that playing in the slot versus anywhere on the field is a big difference.

Saints rookie third-round running back Kendre Miller was taken out due to a knee sprain, but when the third team offense was playing, Ellis Merriweather stepped up.

East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore is furious about the Pardon Board’s decision to hear clemency cases of some death row inmates. Governor John Bel Edwards made the request to reopen the cases and Moore says it’s news to him that the governor is against the death penalty…:

He says approval of the funding is very important to Louisiana’s commercial fishing industry.

3 inmates who escaped from the Ascension Parish Jail Friday night have been recaptured. The sheriff’s office says the 3 breached a door and got into the prison’s recreation yard where they went over a wall and barbed wire fencing. They were taken back into custody less than 3 hours later.

Some residents in Vernon Parish were placed under a voluntary evacuation Friday afternoon due to a large wildfire. As of Friday night, the sheriff’s office said the blaze in the Evans Community had been 90% contained and that firefighters were still handling hot spots and watching for jumps across lines.

The Biden Administration announces the federal government will spend one point two billion dollars to build underground carbon capture hubs in Texas and Louisiana. The carbon capture facility in Louisiana will be in Calcasieu Parish. Governor John Bel Edwards is thrilled the White House selected Louisiana…:

The White House says the project is estimated to create 23-hundred jobs, with a goal to hire workers formerly employed by the oil and gas industry for ten percent of the overall workforce.

A veteran deputy with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office has been fired following his arrest for DWI and hit and run. Authorities say 50-year-old Sgt Clint Gray was also booked with resisting an officer and careless operation. Sherriff Jason Ard said Gray, who had been an LPSO deputy since 2001, is no longer a member of the department.

The state has received up to $603 million dollars in Department of Energy grant funding to build an underground air capture hub in Calcasieu Parish. Former New Orleans Mayor and Lt. The facility will attempt to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and bury it deep underground.

I-10 along the Louisiana – Mississippi state line reopened this morning after being shut down in both directions Friday afternoon due to a huge brush fire in the median. The dense smoke obscured visibility in the area and crews needed the roads cleared to get the blaze under control. The closure was in effect for nearly 11 hours.

The Louisiana DA’s Association is not happy about the Pardon Board’s decision to schedule clemency cases for death row inmates. The call was made a day after Governor John Bel Edwards request, and East Baton Rouge DA Hillar Moore says prosecutors were completely blindsided by this…:

The Saints can only control security for parking areas on the Superdome’s property so they asked the NOPD to increase patrols in the city for fans who park throughout downtown and surrounding areas.

The goal is to hire as many displaced oil & gas industry workers as possible.

Three people are dead and one person severely injured, after a high speed chase of a stolen vehicle through West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes ended in a fiery crash. Officers chasing the vehicle lost it on Highway 190 for a time, but came upon the car crashed into a tree and ablaze. The men inside were heavily armed and wearing body armor and cops want to know what they were up to.
