Tim Temple, an insurance professional from DeRidder, will take over in January…after his only challenger, Ascension Parish Democrat Rich Weaver dropped out. Louisiana Wildlife Federation is encouraging building owners, businesses, and residents to participate in turning off bright or excess outdoor lighting from 11 PM to 6 AM every day through November 15 to help protect the billions of migratory birds that fly through Louisiana at night. LWF Board Member Charles Williams says buildings and windows kill roughly a million birds in the U.S. every year…:

Williams says reducing lighting is one of the easiest ways everyone can take part in this initiative.

Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis plans to ask the state’s utility companies to delay customer disconnections for non-payment during the governor’s declared heat state of emergency. Following the first day of hearings over teens being housed at Angola, advocates voiced their frustrations with the Office of Juvenile Justice at a press conference Tuesday. Lead counsel, David Utter with Fair Fight Initiative says they want to know if the state is treating juveniles with deliberate indifference…:

More than a dozen teens have been housed there for the last 10 months, but are kept separate from the adult prisoners.

The National Basketball Association is introducing a new in season tournament this year accompanied by group play to determine the tournament seeding, and the New Orleans Pelicans got their schedule. The Pelicans are playing in a round robin style tournament starting with a trip to Houston on Nov. 10, then playing Dallas and Denver at home on the Nov. 14th and 17th, and then travelling to Los Angeles to play the Clippers on Nov. 24th. If the Pelicans can are able to earn the best record among the 5 team group, then they will advance to the knockout round as one of the eight teams competing for a cash prize that grows by advancing.

At LSU football’s media day on Tuesday, backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier spoke to the media about if his offseason included serious consideration of the transfer portal. Nussmeier says that he is going to stick with his hometown team even as the backup, but if his name is called, he says he will be ready.

Transfer defensive back from Syracuse, Duce Chestnut, also spoke to the media yesterday for the first time since joining the Tigers. He says that he has always wanted to be in Baton Rouge despite playing with the Orange last year, and he says he loves the competition in the Southeastern conference.

Head coach Brian Kelly is expected to speak to the media on Wednesday, and TigerRag.com and the Tiger Rag audibles podcast will have more information on what he says, but before Nussmeier left on Tuesday, he says that the entire staff and players have gotten comfortable in Kelly’s second year.

Chances are you’re grateful for the dip in temperatures this morning. State Climatologist Barry Keim says it’s all thanks to cold dry air from Canada that’s given us a break from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Highs today will be in the low to mid-90s which Keim says is typical for this time of year. Enjoy it while you can because the triple digit temperatures and heat indices return on Friday.

And even with a slight break with the excessive temperatures today and tomorrow, Louisiana is still in a state of emergency due to extreme heat. At today’s Public Service Commission, Commissioner Davante Lewis will formally ask utility companies not to disconnect anyone’s power right now:

A new survey by Tulane University gives more insight into the prevalence of violence in Louisiana. Newcomb Institute Executive Director Anita Raj led the survey and says of the 1,000 adults who participated more than half responded that they’ve been physically or sexually assaulted:

Findings from the study will be shared at the Louisiana Women’s Policy and Research Commission meeting today in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis will make a request for all of the state’s utility companies to pause all disconnections of utilities during the excessive heat.  While it is common for electric utilities to pause disconnects following natural disasters and other emergencies, Lewis believes utilities should understand now is not the time to turn off the power because of non-payment…

The Democrat represents 10 parishes, that include Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

A new report by Tulane University gives more insight into the prevalence of violence in the Bayou State. Of the 1,000 adults surveyed, more than half have been physically or sexually assaulted. Newcomb Institute Executive Director Anita Raj led the survey and says the nature of the violence differs among genders.

Another common theme among the findings was gun violence. Raj says about one in five Louisianans have been threatened or harmed with a gun in their lifetime.

The Baton Rouge businessman accused in a 2015 murder-for-hire plot against his ex-wife has been found guilty of first-degree murder. The jury reached the verdict for Hamid (A-meed) Ghassemi (Ga-semi) after a trial that lasted several days in Baton Rouge. He hired 3 people to kill his ex-wife, Tahera Ghassemi, and get rid of her body. Prosecutors said he did this over a $1.1 million dollar divorce settlement. A sentencing date for the man is set for Tuesday, September 19th.

ESPN is reporting the Saints have released wide receiver James Washington as the team prepares to Sunday’s preseason road game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Washington played just 26 snaps in the Saints’ preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and saw just two targets. He was one of only two active Saints receivers who didn’t record a catch.

The New Orleans Pelicans inaugural NBA in-season tournament schedule has been announced in the upcoming 2023-24 season which includes all 30 teams. The in-season tourney will consist of two stages, Group Play and the Knockout Round. Teams were randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference based on win-loss records from last season. The Pels will match up against the Dallas Mavericks, the Denver Nuggets, The Houston Rockets and the LA Clippers in Group play beginning Friday November 10th.
