Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy says that former President Donald trump should drop out of the upcoming presidential election in 2024. Jeff Palermo has more.

On Aug. 20 at around 8 p.m., Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a threat of a shooting at LaGrange High School. After some research they pinpointed the social media threat came from a 15 year old LaGrange High School student. He was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with 7 counts of terrorizing.

 

An ATV ride in St. Tamany Parish near Bush turned deadly when two female juveniles were driving the vehicle and ran into a tree. Police responded on Saturday night and both victims were sent to the hospital. Sargent Suzanne Carboni gives an update on the pair’s medical status.

The Saints were able to get the win despite tropical storm Hilary making landfall during the game and the team being penalized 14 times for 141 yards. Coach Dennis Allen says a win is a win, but there is work to do.

The LSU baseball team is coming off their seventh national championship in school history and much of their team left for the draft, but Jay Johnson says that they are putting behind their past success for the new year.

The team is added new coaches, Nate Yeskie and Terry Rooney to the staff, and Johnson thinks the high turnover means the team is doing well.

The top two picks in the MLB draft, Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, both have been promoted to their Double-A affiliates with their respective teams. The pair helped LSU baseball win their 7th national titles before being drafted number one and number two overall and signing the two largest rookie deals in MLB history.
The Rajun Cajun are closing in on their week one matchup against Northwestern State on Sept. 2. The team is two weeks away from their matchup, and Rajun Cajun head coach says the team has greatly improved.

The LHSAA and the Nine Schools suing them had their day in court today. The schools are suing the LHSAA because they allege that the LHSAA unfairly changed the playoff format for certain schools.

Entergy customers will not be disconnected for lack of payment while Louisiana remains under a State of Emergency until September 9th. During last week’s PSC Commission meeting, Commissioner Davante Lewis asked providers not to disconnect anyone’s power due to the ongoing excessive heat advisories. The Louisiana Department of Health says there have been a number of heat-related deaths.

There is a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico moving south of Louisiana towards Texas and it’s resulted in a Red Flag Warning, which means wildfires and grass fires can spread quickly.  National Weather Service Lake Charles Meteorologist Stacey Denson.

According to the governor’s office, there have been more than 260 wildfires during this hot and dry summer that have damaged and destroyed more than 3,500 acres. Denson says the breezy conditions driven by tropical depression heading towards Texas…

Warm temperatures and dry wind are the perfect mixture for activity to develop over warm waters and there are three named storms Emily, Franklin, and Gert in the Atlantic Ocean. Denson says there’s low pressure moving across the Gulf but that’s given a 70% chance of development.

The state burn ban remains in effect.

Police were called to the scene on Saturday night when they were rushed to the hospital. Sargent Suzanna Carboni gives an update on the pair’s condition after the accident.

The 12 year old that passed was confirmed to be Payton Strain, and this is not the first death in the area from this type of accident, so Carboni has a message to all ATV owners.

Nine schools from Rapides Parish and the Monroe area are seeking an injunction that would prevent the Association from implementing the football playoff format they used last year. Attorney Brian Blackwell represents the schools and says high schools never had a chance to vote on the new definition for select schools…

A tropical depression is moving across the Gulf of Mexico from east to west. It’s staying well south of Louisiana as it moves towards Texas. National Weather Service Lake Charles Meteorologist Stacey Denson says the depression is causing breezy conditions across the state…

Despite the looming threat of tropical storm Hilary and a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hitting southern California an hour and a half before kickoff, the Saints and Chargers played their week 2 preseason game, and the Saints won 22-17. Jameis Winston threw for 169 yards on 13 of 21 passing, and Jake Haener threw for 118 yards on 11 of 17 passing. The Saints got the win, but not without racking up 14 penalties for 141 yards. Coach Dennis Allen is happy about the win, but says there are plenty of things to work on.

The Saints are scheduled to play the Texans on Sunday, Aug. 27 to wrap up their preseason, despite having joint practices lined up, they agreed it was in their best interests to hold their own practices separately.

 

It’s officially game week for Louisiana Tech. Head coach Sonny Cumbie and the Bulldogs will be playing Florida International on Saturday in Ruston for their Week Zero matchup. Cumbie says his team has a high skill level, but there are still a few unknowns.

LSU completed their inter squad scrimmage on Saturday and had great performances from both sides of the ball. Both quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier looked game ready and cornerback Zy Alexander forced a fumble and recovered it. Running back Kaleb Jackson filled in and had the performance of the day. Jackson scored two touchdowns including one from a 75 yard break away run.

The LHSAA and the nine schools are facing off in court today over the restructured playoff format. The schools are seeking a preliminary injunction over the change of the select non select playoff school shuffling. Representing the schools is attorney Brian Blackwell.

The federal government awards a one-point-eight million dollar grant to Poverty Point World Heritage Site in West Carroll Parish that be used to fund a new interactive museum, research center, visitor center, and other amenities. Division of Administration spokesperson Jacques Berry says the plan is to modernize the experience, so that’s what the grant is paying for….

The site attracts 100,000 visitors a year and generates $766,000 in revenue

The state has seen 407,000 Louisianans leave their jobs in the first six months of this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economist Loren Scott says many Louisiana workers are leaving their job for better pay…

And according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the state’s unemployment rate in July was 3.5 percent, the lowest ever for July.

A court hearing in Baton Rouge takes place today over the LHSAA’s playoff format for football, basketball, baseball, and softball. A group of schools Rapides Parish and the Monroe area are upset the LHSAA executive committee reduced the number of playoff brackets and moved a bunch of schools from non-select to select. Last year, the LHSAA executive committee moved dozens of schools from non-select to select, because they had students at their school that were from outside of the attendance zone.
