A plane crash in Monroe claims the lives of two people. The Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Thursday night around 11 pm. The wreckage of the single-engine Beech 36 was located near the John H Hooks Junior Memorial Airport. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.

The state’s wildlife and fisheries commission approve a plan to conserve the popular redfish. Jeff Palermo has the story.

47-year-old Brian Horn has been convicted by a Desoto Parish jury a second time for the 2010 brutal killing of 12-year-old Justin Bloxom of Stonewall. The verdict was returned in DeSoto District Court after less than 15 minutes of deliberations. Desoto District Attorney Charlie Adams says Horn’s case is why Louisiana has the death penalty….

It remains to be seen if the sentence will be carried as it has been since 2010 since an execution has taken place in Louisiana.

The FDA approved the new groundbreaking medication, Leqembi, that appears to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.  LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center Professor Dr. Owen Carmichael says it’s a completely new era for Alzheimer’s disease.

Carmichael warns the medication is not effective for all Alzheimer’s patients, it’s only effective against those with a specific protein in the brain.

Authorities in Richland Parish report a small aircraft, with two persons aboard, crashed into a cornfield Friday morning; not far from the John Hooks Airport in Rayville. We’re told both persons are dead. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will begin a joint investigation into what caused the crash.

It’s the second time Horn has been convicted and sentenced to die for this brutal crime. Desoto District Attorney Charlie Adams believes this conviction will stick…:

Horn’s conviction in 2014 was overturned on a technical issue. The jury took just 20 minutes to return a guilty verdict this time.

A newly approved drug to treat Alzheimer’s is a beacon of hope for the over 5-million Americans affected by the disease. Dr. Owen Carmichael, with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, says the drug Laqembi Is a breakthrough, but it may not work for ALL patients…:

Adams says his attorney in the second trial used the same strategy, having Horn admit guilt in the hopes of avoiding the death sentence…

The minimum size allowed would change from 16 to 18 inches and anglers can no longer keep a redfish above 24 inches.

Biologists suggested a limit of four redfish caught per day, per angler. But McPherson says a catch limit of three would speed up the recovery of the redfish population from 30 years to ten years.

The plan will undergo a public comment period that last until October 5th. McPherson says the catch limit changes could go into effect in early December, if an oversight committee of the state legislature does not step in…

Carmichael says the medication is a twice-weekly infusion that’s been shown to clear sticky brain plaque linked to the disease.

And while it’s a remarkable advancement, Carmichael cautions Leqembi can have notable side effects.

The FDA’s accelerated approval of Leqembi also prompted the Center for Medicare Services to announce they’ll pay for the drug via coverage under evidence development. That means patients will be monitored and physicians are required to track their progress similar to a clinical trial.

Carmichael warns the medication is not effective for all Alzheimer’s patients, it’s only effective against those with a specific protein in the brain.

Carmichael says it’s not known yet if long-term use of the medication will reverse one’s brain to pre-Alzheimer’s status and if the medication can wear off.

Pennington’s Dr. Owen Carmichael says the advancement is huge, but there are notable side effects…:

Visitors in New Orleans’ Jackson Square were shocked this morning when a huge oak tree snapped suddenly; sending a big branch crashing down. A teen boy was hit by the falling branch and pinned for some time. He is in critical condition now at a New Orleans hospital. No work was being done on the tree at the time.

As expected, Governor Edwards has vetoed a bill that would have banned transgender medical procedures on minors. In his veto statement, Edwards says the Stop Hurting Our Kids act will do just that, and there’s no evidence any such surgeries have ever been done here. The veto could be overridden by the House & Senate, if enough lawmakers vote to come back to Baton Rouge.

A Baton Rouge man, arrested this week for allegedly beating a local woman to death, has a history of violence toward women and multiple restraining orders against him. 35-year-old Cedrick Lang is charged with 2nd-degree murder for the death of 42-year-old Rachel Johnson on Monday.
