Two former state troopers could be cleared of wrongdoing in the Ronald Greene case.  Judge Thomas Rogers has quashed the obstruction of justice charges against John Peters and Dakota DeMoss. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the judge determined Peters’ actions did not meet the level of obstruction of justice by saying “bury it in the report” when discussing Greene’s in-custody death…:

New data shows rank & file Louisiana law officers are paid more than $20-thousand less than the national average; $45k as opposed to about $70k nationally. Steven Procopio, with the Public Affairs Research Council, says that may not include supplemental pay passed by the legislature though…:

Police in Natchitoches are investigating a murder at a local motel. NPD arrived at the Motel 6 on Highway 1 to find 35-year-old Michael Porter dead from multiple gunshots. They ask anyone with tips to call Natchitoches Crime stoppers; 318-238-2388.

Schools and athletic events in Louisiana will be required to have emergency AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) and trained individuals to use them in case something goes terribly wrong. Brooke Thorington explains…:

The state health department is reporting Louisiana’s first two human cases of West Nile Virus for 2023. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says mosquito pools are present and cases have been discovered in two parishes across the state.

Last year, Louisiana had 41 West Nile cases and seven deaths.

Last year Louisiana paid its more than 13,000 patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies an average annual salary of $45 thousand compared to the national average of $71 thousand. PAR President Steven Procopio says when comparing Louisiana to neighboring states, law enforcement patrol officers are paid six thousand below the regional average…

Schools and athletic events in Louisiana are now required to have AEDs. Bill author Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields says the health department will have oversite of the devices and provide instruction on how to use an AED.

Schools and athletic events in Louisiana are now required to have an automated external defibrillator, better known as an AED. Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields authored the legislation, and he says two lives have already been saved in those settings because an AED was readily available.

The state legislature also appropriated funding for schools to purchase the A-E-Ds and schools are also required to have an action plan.

Two former State Troopers are no longer facing criminal charges for their roles in the alleged coverup of Ronald Greene’s in-custody police death. Judge Thomas Rogers says the actions of John Peters and Dakota Demoss did not result in obstruction of justice. Three people remained charged for their roles in Greene’s roadside death in Union Parish in 2019.

With qualifying for the fall elections just 4 weeks away, could we see some declared candidates for Governor decide NOT to run?

Two more LSU Tigers were selected during the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft. In the third round, Tampa Bay took three-year starter Tre Morgan and in the sixth round, the Washington Nationals selected second baseman Gavin Dugas.

In other LSU baseball news, former assistant Terry Rooney is returning as Jay Johnson has hired Rooney as the director of recruiting and player development according to D-1 Baseball dot-com. Rooney was at LSU in 2007 and 2008 and helped build a team that won a national title in 2009.

And LSU is reportedly getting another arm from UCLA. D-1 Baseball reports left-hander Gage Jump is transferring to the Tigers after missing the 2023 season because of Tommy John Surgery. In 2022 Gage was 1-and-1 with two saves and a 3.86 ERA for the Bruins. Last year, Thatcher Hurd transferred from UCLA to LSU.

Ragin Cajuns catcher Julian Brock was selected in the eighth round by the Texas Rangers. Brock hit .315 with a team-high 11 home runs and 65 RBIs last season and was a second-team All Sun Belt pick.

Also in the eighth round, the New York Yankees took ULM pitcher Nicholas Judice. The Baton Rouge product had a 3-and-3 record and two saves with a 3.74 ERA over 53 innings. He struck out 66. Judice is the first Warhawk selected in the first ten rounds since Matt Green was taken in the second round in 2005.

And in the tenth round the Pirates picked Louisiana Tech right-hander Landon Tomkins. This past season, Tomkins was six and two with a 3.62 ERA and struck out 75 in 76.2 innings.

SEC Football Media Days are next week in Nashville. LSU says Coach Brian Kelly will be joined by quarterback Jayden Daniels, defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo and running back Josh Williams. They will talk with reporters on Monday.
