A six-week archaeological dig in Vernon Parish turns up artifacts dating back to the Ice age. U.L.-Lafayette Anthropology Professor Mark Rees says the finds will help shed a lot of light on Louisiana’s earliest residents…:

Senator Bill Cassidy is working on bipartisan legislation to cap flood insurance costs and reform the national program. Cassidy says, under his bill, annual increases in flood insurance premiums would be capped at 9-percent…:

FEMA has yet to explain the 18-percent hike in flood insurance, OR their Risk Rating 2.0 pricing structure.

In a new ad campaign, candidate for Governor Jeff Landry tells voters he feels the pain of the working person because he also came from blue collar roots…:

The 30-second ad is airing statewide. Landry leads the field of candidate for governor by a double-digit margin.

 

Deep-pocketed Louisiana Republicans are expected to attend a big fundraiser for former President Donald Trump’s bid for another term in the White House. The July 25th event in Metairie is hosted by shipbuilder Boyse Bollinger and banker Joe Canizaro. Space at the table will cost over $23-thousand per person.

Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy is working with New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menendez in reforming the flood insurance program and cap premium increases. Cassidy expects there will be a hearing soon in DC on their legislation.

Cassidy says FEMA has yet to explain the 18 percent increase and their calculations for Risk Rating 2.0.

Before premium increases were capped at nine percent annually, Cassidy says under Risk Rating 2.0 the increase can be as high as 18 percent. His proposal caps the annual maximum increase to nine percent.

Cassidy says he wants to help homeowners along the coast who are being priced out of remaining in their homes. He says the same problems Louisianans are facing with flood insurance are also happening in New Jersey and New York. Reduced rates, he says would be based on need and no one would necessarily receive free coverage.

Cassidy says the bipartisan Infrastructure Act is putting funds towards making areas vulnerable to natural disasters more resilient and once completed it should lower flood insurance rates.

During a six-week excavation in the Kisatchie National Forest in Vernon Parish, researchers with UL Lafayette have discovered rare artifacts dating back to the last Ice Age. UL Lafayette Professor of Anthropology Dr. Mark Rees says they unearthed a collection of projectile points and stone instruments…

Rees excavating team uncovered artifacts such as ceramics, stone tools, and evidence that suggests that a bow and arrow was used by nomadic groups of people that occupied this land 13,000 years ago.

Researchers uncovered the first evidence of a permanent structure in the national forest. Rees says the post-molds will help interpret time and societal associations…

Students from UL-Lafayette, LSU, and Tulane University also participated in the excavation.

Former President Donald Trump is planning to hold a fundraiser for his 2024 presidential campaign, It will be held in Metairie on July 25th at the home of retired banker Joseph Cannizzaro. In order to attend, it will cost$23,200 per person and per couple.

Saints star running back Alvin Kamara has pleaded no contest to lesser misdemeanor charge from a fight that occurred at a Las Vegas nightclub involving another NFL player and two other men. As part of the plea deal, Kamara will have to perform community service and pay 100-thousand dollars for the victim’s medical bills. He still faces a suspension from the NFL and Locked on Saints podcast host Ross Jackson says it could be as much as six games…

Saints running back Alvin Kamara agrees to a plea deal with prosecutors in Nevada and has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace for his involvement in a 2022 fight in Las Vegas.

Pelicans star Zion Williamson opened up about his struggles in an interview on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast. The 23-year-old forward says he just wants to hoop as injuries have limited to 114 games in four NBA seasons. Williamson also admits it’s been difficult for him to eat healthy, but he’s putting people around him with wisdom.

LSU set a school record with 13 players drafted during the 20-round Major League Baseball Draft. Seven players went in the second round. The Orioles took pitchers Blake Money and Riley Cooper and the Dodgers took shortstop Jordan Thompson and left hander pitcher Javen Coleman. Nate Ackenhausen was not drafted and is expected to return to LSU.

Shreveport Police held a briefing Tuesday after a lengthy standoff Monday that ended with what authorities believe is the suspect’s charred remains found inside a Crook Creek home. Police Chief Wayne Smith says among the shooting victims was a 13-year-old girl who was hiding in the home. Smith praised the three officers who entered the home amid gunfire to save her.

Names of those involved have not been released and the teen and a neighbor who was also shot are expected to make a full recovery.

Qualifying for statewide elections is next month and there’s just one announced candidate for Insurance Commissioner. But insurance professional Tim Temple he’ll campaign as if he has a challenger…

Natchitoches Police are asking for help in locating 19-year-old Matthew Robinson. Robinson is the suspected gunman in the shooting death of 35-year-old Michael Porter. The incident happened early Tuesday morning at Motel 6 on the Highway 1 Bypass. Robinson faces second-degree murder charges.

A 14-year-old juvenile has been charged with negligent homicide in what police are calling the accidental shooting death of a 13-year-old female in Hammond last weekend. The shooting happened in a home in the 1200 block of Willow Street. The investigation is ongoing.
