Folks in the Shreveport area are still dealing with storm debris from the severe storms and tornadoes that tore through the region in late June. The city says debris pickup should begin Monday and run through the end of July. If you have questions, call Shreveport’s Department of Public Works at 318-673-6300.

 

A veto override session will begin Tuesday in Baton Rouge. Lawmakers will meet again in Baton Rouge to consider overturning some of the Governor’s 25 vetoes. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says Mr. Edwards’ veto of the transgender surgery ban for minors was the trigger to bring lawmakers back…:

The veto override session starts Tuesday and will end Saturday.

A package of bills to aid cancer patients in insurance matters has been signed into law by the Governor. Julie Stokes, with the Louisiana Oncology Society, is a cancer survivor and applauds the new law that assures a patient’s right to speedy review and coverage…:

Other new laws provide insurance coverage for biomarker scans to help oncologists more accurately treat your cancer, and one requiring insurance to cover fertility preservation steps for cancer patients.

Natchitoches Police make an arrest in the murder of a man Tuesday at the Motel 6 on Highway 1. 27-year-old Ambrea Howard is charged with 2nd-degree murder for the crime. Natchitoches cops are still seeking 19-year-old Matt Robinson; also allegedly involved in the crime.

 

The police chief in Grand Couteau, in St. Landry Parish, is under arrest; charged with trafficking narcotics. St. Landry Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says the investigation revealed evidence that drugs seized by police were finding their way back onto the streets. He says it’s bad enough the small town has dope dealers…:

Police chief Jeffrey Guilbeau is charged with distribution, theft, obstruction of justice, and malfeasance in office.

Also in St. Landry…a Melville man, is in jail accused of a machete attack on a local Catholic priest. Melville Police Chief Phil Lucas says the town is shaken…:

The suspect is identified as 58-year-old Johnny Neely, who is charged with attempted murder. The priest is recovering from cuts to his head and body.

The small town of Melville in St. Landry Parish is in shock after a man used a machete to attack a priest. Police Chief Phillip Lucas says 58-year-old Johnny Neely of Melville is in custody after the alleged attack on a St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church priest Thursday night. Lucas says he could also be charged with a hate crime…:

The priest is being treated for cuts to his head and body.

The police chief in Grand Coteau has been arrested. Authorities received a tip that Chief Jeff Guilbeau was involved in the use and distribution of illegal narcotics. St Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says they began surveillance and verified the information…:

Guilbeau is charged with distribution, theft, obstruction of justice, and malfeasance in office.

 

Lawmakers will return to the State Capitol Tuesday for a veto override session. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says Governor Edwards vetoed 25 bills and specific items in three different budget bills…:

Schexnayder says the governor’s veto of a bill to ban gender affirming care of transgender minors has motivated Conservative lawmakers to try veto overrides for a third straight year.

Some positive cancer-related bills NOT vetoed by the Governor are being celebrated. Julie Stokes, with the Louisiana Oncology Society, is glad the Governor signed a bill assuring insurance covers new and developing treatments…:

Another new law provides for fertility preservation for people undergoing cancer treatments. And another lets you select “bone marrow donor” on your driver’s license.

Lawmakers decided at midnight Thursday to head back to the Capitol for an override veto session scheduled to take place at noon on Tuesday. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says it will take a two-thirds vote in the House and Senate to override any of the governor’s vetoes…

Twelve members of the Senate and 31 members of the House voted to cancel the override veto session. The override veto session is scheduled to take five days.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette celebrates its 125th anniversary today. It was July 14, 1898, when the governor signed an act to establish Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, now known as ULL. University president Dr. Joseph Savoie (Sav-wa) says a recent economic impact study indicates ULL has a $2.7 billion dollar impact in the state…

Current Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards will be in Shreveport this afternoon to discuss the future of the former General Motors assembly plant. According to the USA Today Network the economic development announcement could mean 600 new jobs.

The small town of Melville in St. Landry Parish is in shock after a man used a machete and attacked a priest. Police Chief Phillip Lucas says Johnny Neeley of Melville is in custody after the alleged attack of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church priest.

The priest is listed in critical condition following the attack.

Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the nation, has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Nicole Freehill, Assistant Professor of Clinical OB/GYN at LSU Health New Orleans says when used as directed, the pill has the highest prevention rate among over-the-counter contraceptives.

The Opill is expected to be widely available at the beginning of 2024.

Attorney General Jeff Landry holds a large lead in many of the polls in the field for the governor’s race among voters. The poll was conducted for the non-partisan good government group, Citizens For a New Louisiana. CFNL director Michael Lunsford says the survey of over 600 likely voters was done between July 6th and 10th…:

There will be an override veto session at the state capitol next week. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder confirmed it is happening while speaking with Brian Haldane on Talk 107-3 in Baton Rouge this morning.

The gubernatorial primary is three months from today and a new poll released by Citizens for a New Louisiana shows Republican Jeff Landry is receiving 30-percent of the vote, while Democrat Shawn Wilson is getting 20-percent. Director for Citizens for a New Louisiana, Michael Lunsford, says the other declared candidates are in the single digits…

House Speaker Clay Schexnayder told Talk 107-3 FM in Baton Rouge that there will be a veto override session next week. State legislators had until midnight last night to submit a ballot to cancel the override veto session. The governor’s veto of a bill to ban gender affirming care is motivating the Republican led Legislature to hold an override session.

Yet another poll in the governor’s race shows Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry with a comfortable lead over all challengers.

The latest statewide economic impact study indicates U-L Lafayette has a statewide economic impact of $2.7 billion dollars on the state.

Football season is around the corner but former LSU Coach Ed Orgeron does not have that itch to coach again. Orgeron told the Advocate Newspaper he’s likely done coaching as the 61-year-old is enjoying his free time since he was fired from LSU in 2021. Orgeron’s name was connected to the vacant head coaching job at Northwestern, but he’s not sure how those rumors started.

Six-foot-five left-handed pitcher Cameron Johnson says he plans on attending LSU after he was selected in the 20th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Johnson pitched for IMG Academy last season and he’s ranked as the 42nd best prospect going into the draft according to M-L-B-dot-com.

Also, right-handed pitcher Christian Little says he will return to LSU next season after he was drafted in the 19th by the New York Mets. Little struggled with a 7.79 ERA last season after transferring in from Vanderbilt.

The Pelicans raced out to an 18-0 lead last night and defeated the Hornets 89 to 83 in Summer League Action. Dereon Seabron had 20 points as he was nine of 13 from the field. Dyson Daniels added 16 points and E-J Liddell had 11 points in 20 minutes. New Orleans is now 3-and-1 and will play one more game this weekend.

LSU men’s basketball will play at least three exhibition games in the Bahamas next month as the Tigers look to have a much better season next year, year two for head coach Matt McMahon. The Tigers will be in the Bahamas from August 6th to the 12th. College teams are allowed to make an international trip every four years.

There is some sad news to report involving the LSU women’s basketball program. Former All-SEC women’s basketball player Danielle Ballard has died at the age of 29 after she was hit by a car at an intersection in Memphis early Thursday morning. The five-foot-nine guard averaged 12 points and seven rebounds during her career from 2012 to 2015.
