Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a state of emergency.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is upset state lawmakers did not appropriate three million dollars to cover construction and repair costs of animal shelters. Director Jeff Dorson says there was even a plan to build two shelters at state prisons where the inmates would clean and interact with pets.

Last year a request for $2 million for repairs or renovations to animal shelters was also denied.

Among the traditions at the College World Series, is the Jell-O Shot Challenge, and as expected LSU is crushing it. Tiger fans have quite a reputation when it comes to alcohol. Obviously the focus for the LSU baseball program is what happens this week, but there’s also an eye to the future. The Tigers have received a commitment from left-hander Justin Loer, who put up good numbers at Xavier University this season. In 57 innings pitched, Loer had an ERA of 1.89.

In college baseball coaching news…former Southeastern Louisiana Coach Matt Riser has landed a new job as he’s the new head coach at Memphis. And former LSU coach Paul Mainieri will reportedly interview for the head coaching vacancy at Miami. Mainieri retired as LSU’s baseball coach following the 2021 season. Health was a big factor as he was dealing with neck pain. Mainieri played high school baseball in Miami and also attended Miami-Dade Community College.

Junior college tight end Connor Gilbreath has committed to LSU. He’s six-foot-five, 265 pounds and Gilbreath told ON3 sports that he expects offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock will use him as a blocking tight end.

In this sweltering heat, thousands are without power in northwest Louisiana from strong storms that hit the area Thursday night and again Sunday morning. Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator says there are cooling centers available.

For some people, it’s a double whammy, no power, and damage to their home from a fallen tree.

A tropical depression number three has developed in the Atlantic, it’s expected to become Tropical Storm Bret possibly later today. It’s located roughly midway between the Lesser Antilles and the African coast. It’s moving west at 20 miles per hour. And there’s another system right behind it with the 30% chance of developing into a cyclone in the next 48 hours.

Another casualty of the state budget fighting is the Humane Society of Louisiana. HSLA Director Jeff Dorson says half of the state’s 64 parishes lack parish-wide facilities to provide essential services, and because there was a budget surplus again this year, Dorson says they asked for a small portion of the $1.6 billion.

HSLA asked for $3 million of the state’s surplus to cover construction and repair costs of shelters across the state.

Optimism among small businesses continues to slide. The National Federation of Independent Business survey shows a 17th straight month of declining optimism among members. NFIB state director Dawn McVea says labor shortages and inflation woes have small locally owned & operated businesses “on the ropes”…:

State Police are investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting in Pineville Sunday early morning. Troopers say police had an encounter with a male subject, who reportedly begin firing at them. The male subject died on the scene. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

HSLA asked for $3 million of the state’s surplus to cover construction and repair costs of shelters across the state.  H-S-L-A Director Jeff Dorson says there was even a plan to build two shelters at state prisons where the inmates would clean and interact with pets.

The state Department of Health reports nearly 3,000 Louisianans were hospitalized or treated every year from 2010-2020 due to heat-related illness. Parishes with the highest rates of heat-related hospitalizations were clustered around the Central and Northwest regions of the state. Dr. Alicia Van Doren says hospitalization and ED rates for workers are distributed around the northern part of the state.

In north Louisiana this morning, SWEPCO reports over 130-thousand of its customers are without power as a result of last Thursday night’s severe weather. Entergy Louisiana has additional five-thousand customers experiencing an outage. No electricity, means no air conditioning. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says there are cooling centers available…

There are also a couple of cooling stations in Bossier Parish, one in DeSoto and one in Webster Parish at the town hall in Doyline.

Governor Edwards has issued a state of emergency for north and central Louisiana as a result of widespread power outages and water advisories caused by severe weather and strong winds. Thousands in the Shreveport-Bossier area are without power and some have damage to their homes as a result of fallen trees. LSU baseball has landed a left-handed pitcher out of the transfer portal. His name is Justin Loer and the Minnesota native had an ERA of 1.89 at Xavier this season. He helped the Muskateers reach the NCAA Nashsville Regional.

Former Southeastern Louisiana coach Matt Riser has found a new job. Riser is the new head coach at Memphis. Riser had a great ten-year run in Hammond, guiding the Lions to four NCAA Tournament berths and three Southland Conference titles. He was let go in May after S-L-U failed to make the Southland Tournament.

A new report shows an average of nearly 3,000 Louisianans were hospitalized or treated every year due to heat-related illness from 2010-2020. The findings come from the Louisiana Department of Health.  Dr. Alicia Van Doren says disparities in the study show shows gender and race being disproportionately affected.

Men accounted for over 80 percent of all cases. Parishes with the highest rates of heat-related hospitalizations were clustered around the Central and Northwest regions of the state. Van Doren says knowing the symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion is important for prevention.

Concerns over labor have overtaken inflation worries in the periodic member survey. McVea says small businesses are finding it harder than ever to deliver goods & services and make a profit. 43-percent of members report trouble filling jobs and keeping help…:

The number of NFIB member businesses saying they expect business conditions to improve over the next 6 months has dropped to a net negative 50-percent. 44-percent say job openings are still very hard to fill – even impossible in some cases. Over 20-percent anticipate lower sales and revenues in the near future as well. McVea says debt service on loans is also a big concern for small businesses, as lending rates continue to rise…:

Around 200-thousand homes and businesses across northwestern Louisiana lost power yesterday, as strong thunderstorms roared through; bringing straight line winds of up to 80 miles an hour. Shreveport National Weather Service forecaster Shane Pendleton says the damage and amount of cleanup is astonishing…:

SWEPCO is still restoring power in Caddo, Bossier, Natchitoches, DeSoto and Red River. As of this morning, several hundred customers are still waiting for the lights – and AC – to come back on.

A new report says affordable housing is out of the reach of MOST Louisianans. The National Low Income Housing Coalition says one must earn AT LEAST $19.00 an hour to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment; the average rent for which is around $1000-a-month. The coalition says that’s unrealistic for too many Louisiana low wage workers.
