The FDA has approved an RSV vaccine for adults 60 years old and up. Pharmaceutical giant GSK has produced the vaccine. In a late-stage clinical trial, a single dose shot lowerd the risk of symptomatic illness by 83-percent and of severe illness by 94-percent. The state House is set to debate and vote on House Bill 1 today, the proposed 46-billion state budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st. House Appropriations Chairman Jerome Zeringue says it may not be everything Governor Edwards asked for, but the spending plan is fiscally responsible:

Dean of the University’s College Nursing and Health Sciences, Doctor Lisa Broussard, says if you have a bachelor’s degree. you can get a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 15 months and tuition would be free…

One day after one House committee approved a pay raise for state lawmakers that would more than double their annual salary, another House committee rejected a proposal to increase the minimum wage in Louisiana from $7.25 to ten-dollars an hour. Opponents say a higher minimum wage would mean less jobs for low earning workers.

Bossier City authorities credit a hotel manger for helping them apprehend a man who was on a killing spree. Police spokesperson Louis Johnson says 50-year-old Cortrell Burks fled to a nearby hotel after fatally shooting two people during an armed robbery Tuesday morning at a gas station off of I-20…

Burks is also charged in the stabbing death of a 40-year-old woman in Birmingham, Alabama.

In college baseball last night, ULM scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to run Alcorn State 17 to 4. Matt Abshire hit a grand slam. The Warhawks host the Cajuns this weekend.

Todd Garvin is the 14th head football coach in West Monroe history. The former long-time assistant of the Rebels takes the job at West Monroe after leading the Ouachita Parish football program the last two seasons. Garvin is a West Monroe native and a former Ouachita Lions quarterback. He played baseball at ULM.

LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese said during an appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show that she now has security detail. Reese says she appreciates the love she’s been receiving from the fans since winning a national championship, but it’s become so intense that she needs security to attend class or go to the grocery store.

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball announces six-foot-eight wing player Jordan Transfer is transferring in from Baylor. Turner has spent last four seasons with the Bears, but only appeared in 32 games. Turner is one of six players who has transferred to Tech this offseason.

An East Baton Rouge grand jury has indicted the driver of a vehicle where 19-year-old LSU student Madison Brooks was allegedly raped before she was struck and killed by a car on Burbank Drive last January. Authorities say Brooks blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal driving limit. Casen Carver was indicted on one count each of first-degree and third degree rape.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the world’s first respiratory syncytial virus vaccine by pharmaceutical giant GSK. RSV causes lower respiratory illness and the vaccine would target adults who are 60 and older. LSU Health New Orleans Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Fred Lopez says having this before the next RSV season coming in late fall and winter is significant.

For older adults with underlying medical conditions like asthma, emphysema, and heart failure, complications from RSV infection can potentially be life-threatening. RSV hospitalizations for the current season were around 51 per 100,000 people, according to the CDC. Lopez says the vaccine looks promising to lower the risk of symptomatic illness.

Lopez says the CDC must still recommend the vaccine before it becomes available to the public.

RSV kills up to 10,000 people ages 65 or older and up to 300 children under 5 every year in the U.S. The CDC’s final recommendation on who will get the vaccine will come in June.

The state House is scheduled to begin debate of House Bill 1, the proposed $45.7-billion state budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerome Zeringue says it may not be everything Governor Edwards asked for, but the spending plan is a good one…:

The governor wanted teacher pay raises of $2000 to $3000 a year. Zeringue says the raises in HB 1 are less than that, because they chose instead to put more surplus dollars into lowering the state’s teacher retirement system debt; the so-called Unfunded Accrued Liability (UAL). He says this will enable school districts to give their own raises…:

Early childhood education will also have less dedicated funding than the governor hoped for. Zeringue says federal money for these programs is falling off and the state cannot afford to sustain funding at that level; not with another fiscal cliff coming in 2025…:

To address the critical need for registered nurses, UL Lafayette and Ochsner Lafayette General have formed a partnership for students to earn an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Interim Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Lisa Broussard, says it’s ideal for those who have a bachelor’s degree in any field and desire a career in nursing.

And not only is the degree accelerated, but Broussard says the hospital will also cover the cost of tuition and provide clinical sites for students.

Any general education courses will be paid for by the student, but any of the 17 required nursing credits will be paid for by the hospital.

Broussard says the nursing shortage is predicted to grow considerably and the partnership is ideal for those who want a career in nursing but both time and costs are obstacles to earning a degree.

Bossier City authorities credit a hotel manger for helping them apprehend a man who was on a killing spree. B-C-P-D spokesperson Louis Johnson says 50-year-old Cortrell Burks fled to a nearby hotel after fatally shooting two people during an armed robbery Tuesday morning at a gas station off of I-20…

Authorities arrested Burks outside of the LeBossier Hotel and Event Center. He’s also wanted in the stabbing death of a 40-year-old woman in Birmingham.

Johnson says officers arrived in about 90 seconds after getting word of a shooting at the Valero gas station on Industrial Drive. He says a responding officer was shot four times.

The wounded officer has been identified as Kenny Gallon. He’s been on the force for seven years and is married with two children. Bossier City police chief Daniel Haugen says Officer Gallon is in good spirits. McWilliams says it appears Burks was traveling on I-20 and happened to stop in Bossier City…

Johnson says the two people killed are a 36-year-old man, who was a clerk, and a 47-year-old, male who was an employee.

A bill that would raise the statewide minimum wage to $10 an hour failed in House Labor Committee on a 9-5 vote. President of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry Jim Patterson opposed the bill he says there are very few non-government workers making less than 10-dollars an hour…

Thirty out of fifty states have a minimum wage greater than the federal minimum wage. Bill author, Alexandria Representative Ed Larvadain (Larva-dane), says lower wages are contributing to the state’s depopulation.

The last federal wage increase was in 2009. Arkansas raised its minimum wage to eleven dollars an hour this year. The minimum wage in Louisiana remains $7.25 an hour.

House Education approves legislation requiring high school students to take a financial literacy class to graduate. Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley says the course will provide students with life skills to understand economics…

The course would be given in 11th and 12th grade and the bill heads to the House floor for debate.

Minden Rep Wayne McMahen bill to make it legal to have your pet’s cremated remains to be buried with you passed unanimously in the House. Amite Representative Robby Carter questioned if the size of one’s pet is an issue.

There are concerns about the Tigers pitching outside of Paul Skenes, but LSU’s pitching staff looked good last night, holding Southeastern Louisiana to two hits in a ten to nothing shutout of the Lions. It’s the eighth shutout of the season for the Bayou Bengals, which leads the nation. But relief pitcher Garrett Edwards from Pitkin is done for the season as he needs reconstructive elbow surgery. LSU is at Auburn this weekend.

Northwestern State completed a two-game regular season sweep of Louisiana Tech by beating the Bulldogs ten to seven in eleven innings last night. The Demons also defeated Tech in extra innings on April fourth.

Todd Garvin was introduced as the new head football coach at West Monroe today. Garvin was an assistant coach at West Monroe for 16 years. The last two seasons he was the head coach at Ouachita Parish and the Lions beat the Rebels in 2021. Garvin is a 2001 graduate at Ouachita Parish and he played baseball at ULM.

A lot of college football players are jumping into the transfer portal when they don’t get immediate playing time, but backup LSU Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier remains a Tiger after deciding not to get into the transfer portal in the spring. On-3-dot-com’s Shea Dixon says Nussmeier has been committed to LSU from the beginning…

Meanwhile LSU assistant Brian Polian is leaving to become the athletic director at his alma mater, John Carroll University. Polian, who followed Coach Brian Kelly to LSU from Notre Dame, was the special teams coordinator last season but was moved to an off-field role 3 months ago. LSU’s kickoff and punt return units ranked near the bottom of the SEC in 2022.

At the State Capitol, a bill that would raise the statewide minimum wage to $10 failed in the House Labor Committee by a 9-5 vote. The bill’s author, Alexandria Representative Ed Larvadain says citizens are struggling to survive and lawmakers must step up…:

Thirty out of fifty states have a minimum wage greater than the federal minimum. Neighboring states like Arkansas and Missouri have done so (at $11 and $12 respectively). National Federation of Independent Business State Director Dawn McVea advocated for small businesses; saying they just can’t afford it…:

The last time the feds raised the minimum was 2009. Opponents said it would cause more job losses than anything else. The bill was voted down and appears dead again this year.

The full House passes a bill that would give a life sentence to persons convicted of distributing an ounce or more of fentanyl. This comes amid a statewide rash of fentanyl overdose deaths; some of which took the lives of kids. That bill now moves to the Senate for committee review.

 

A man wanted for a deadly stabbing and shooting in Alabama is identified as the suspect in Monday’s double murder at a Minden truck stop. Bossier City Police spokesman Louis Johnson says he has heard those reports, but BCPD has not released any information…:

A police officer was also shot and wounded. 50-year-old Cortrell Burks has been booked for the crimes.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the Louisiana Department of Health is promoting the use of 988, a 24/7 suicide and crisis call line. Karen Stubbs, with the Office of Behavioral Health, says they’ve also launched a dashboard to provide transparency of 988 to include call volume, demographics, and what people are using the line for and it will be updated monthly…:
