The 2023 National Championship LSU’s Women’s Basketball team has accepted an invitation to celebrate its historic season at the White House May 26. A definite decision was in up in the air after First Lady Jill Biden publicly invited the Iowa women’s basketball team to join the champions on the visit to the White House. The Tigers scored a game record 102 points in the win over Iowa last month in front of 9.9 million viewers. Women’s basketball will become the fourth LSU sport to visit the White House in celebration of a national championship.

Domestic violence advocates from across the state encouraged lawmakers to support funding for domestic violence shelters in the state budget. Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Director Mariah Wineski says the legislation that passed the House last week did not contain any funding to address the obvious needs.

Louisiana ranked 5th in the nation for femicide and 81% of female homicides in Louisiana are committed by a partner or ex-partner.

A bill requiring parents to give permission for schools to use corporal punishment on children in Louisiana will be up for debate on the House floor today. Metairie Representative Stephanie Hilferty says while some school systems allow corporal punishment, others do not, Hilferty says there’s no rhyme or reason why one parish allows it, and another doesn’t.

Hilferty filed legislation to ban the use of corporal punishment in the past but the bill failed.

Former President Trump has officially endorsed Jeff Landry for Governor of Louisiana. Congressman Mike Johnson, Congressman Clay Higgins, as well as numerous Republican Parish Executive Committees across the state have also added their names to the growing list of Landry supporters. Landry has been the front-running Republican and has lapped his competitors in fund-raising.

The state’s $45.7 billion budget plan passed the houses but had NO funding for the $ 2,000-a-year teacher pay raise. The House decided to put surplus money toward paying down teachers’ retirement system debt. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested an 18-year-old for allegedly fatally shooting an Arkansas man, who was in town for a birthday celebration. Ladarrius Evans of Hammond faces several charges including first-degree murder. The victim, Paul Holt, was set to turn 63 yesterday. The shooting happened Saturday morning during a carjacking.

House Republicans are concerned the state funding for higher teacher salaries in the future may not be sustainable. The top ranked LSU baseball team lost its first SEC series of the season this weekend as Auburn took the rubber match 12 to 2 in eight innings. Brutal first inning for the Bayou Bengals as Christian Little and Griffin Herring could not get anyone out and they walked six hitters in a six-run first inning. LSU is 16 and 7 in the SEC, a half game back of Arkansas for first place in the SEC West.

The Ragin Cajuns completed a sweep of ULM with a ten to nothing win yesterday. The game was shortened to six innings because of weather. The Cajuns improved to 14-and-10 and they are tied for fourth place in the Sun Belt. ULM is 5-and-18 in league play and they’ve lost eight in a row in conference action.

Louisiana Tech could not complete the sweep of UAB over the weekend as they were burned by the Blazers six to one yesterday. Tech is in fourth place in Conference USA and they have clinched a spot in the postseason league tournament.

Nicholls finds itself in first place in the Southland Conference after sweeping Southeastern Louisiana in a doubleheader yesterday, beating the Lions six to five in eleven innings in game one and then winning game two nine to nothing.

McNeese won its series over Lamar, while Northwestern State dropped a series at Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi. The Demons are at LSU tomorrow night.

Grambling strengthened its lead in the SWAC Western Division with two wins over Texas Southern.

Lafayette Police is investigating a shooting at Heymann Park last night that left three people wounded. Authorities say two of the victims have non-life threatening injuries, while a third person, a 35-year-old male, was in critical condition at last report. No arrests have been announced.

Louisiana ranked 5th in the nation for femicide and 81% of female homicides in Louisiana are committed by a partner or ex-partner. Unlike other states, only 10% of domestic violence funding comes from state sources. Wineski believes funding is needed to address the obvious needs.

Wineski says a 2021 audit by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor highlighted multiple issues when it comes to helping domestic violence victims — including gaps in service, insufficient funding, lack of oversight for intervention programs, and more.

The coalition is requesting $15 million be added to the family violence program housed at the Department of Children and Family Services – the main oversight and funding source for domestic violence shelters.

The state’s $45.7-billion budget for the fiscal year that starts this summer has passed the House, but not without some anger and controversy. One issue is the cuts made to Early Childhood Education programs for the next year. Libby Sonnier is executive director of the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children. She says the House Bill 1 that passed the house cuts funding by about $51-million…:

The Governor’s proposed budget added $51-million for Early Childhood, but that was NOT included in the House budget bill. Early Childhood program in Louisiana provide pre-kindergarten education, Head Start programs and privately contracted childcare. Sonnier says, under the House cuts, there will be nearly 8-thousand fewer available slots within the Early Childhood system…:

The budget also came out of the House with NO funding for teacher pay raises, when Governor Edwards asked for at least $2000 per teacher. Members said the raises were “unsustainable.” Cynthia Posey with the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, says they budgeted their own pay raises, $150-million in film tax incentives, plus numerous other tax breaks and expenditures that cut into the bottom line…:

The House chose instead to put surplus money toward paying down the teachers’ retirement system’s debt; freeing up money for local school districts to affect teacher raises. Posey says LFT finds the House budget bill – in its current posture – to be very disappointing. She does not expect good outcomes from the House plan…:

Alford says Landry, who leads the pack as far as campaign funding goes, even has tailored ads running. He says will several Republicans in the race, their supporters are eager to have ads airing sooner than later to build name recognition.

As for the lone Democrat, and former Transportation Secretary, Shawn Wilson, Alford says it’s not as critical to have ads running at this point and he believes Wilson will make the runoff due to his strong base. Qualifying is in August and the primary is on October 14th.

A shooting Thursday morning in New Iberia left a little girl with a gunshot injury. NIPD’s Sgt. Daesha Hughes says it happened at a Raceway gas station, when a mom left her 4 kids in the car while she ran inside. While gone, one of the kids found a gun in the car and somehow shot his 5-year-old sister in the leg. Hughes says never leave your kids unattended in the car..:
