A bill to require the motto “In God We Trust” to be displayed in every public school classroom advances from the House. Gretna Representative Joe Marino opposes the bill. He says it could be seen as promoting a particular religious belief.

In 2018 a bill requiring every school to display “In God We Trust” passed. The bill advances to the Senate after a 98-4 vote in the House.

Researchers at LSU have developed a patent-pending bait to help control the state’s wild hog population. Researcher Glenn Gentry says the bait makes them fall asleep and impedes the flow of oxygen, and there’s no risk to humans or other animals that might eat their remains. Some worry it would eradicate them completely, but Gentry says hunters have nothing to worry about.

LSU men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon has landed a commitment from center Hunter Dean, a Mandeville native, who played the last three seasons at George Washington. The six-foot-ten, 235 pounder averaged nearly nine points and six rebounds a game last season. He’s the fourth prep player from Louisiana to transfer to LSU in the last five weeks.

The Southland Conference Softball Tournament begins today in Lake Charles. At 2:30 Southeastern Louisiana will take on H-C-U. The Lions Bailey Krolczyk has been named the Southland Player of the Year and the Hitter of the Year. S-L-U’s catcher is hitting .384 10 home runs and 48 RBIs.

Tonight Nicholls takes on Northwestern State. The Colonels Justin Lewis has been named Coach of the Year. McNeese is the top seed and they will play tomorrow against the winner of today’s game between Lamar and A-and-M Corpus Christi.

The Conference USA Softball Tournament gets underway tomorrow at noon in Ruston. La Tech will play Middle Tennessee.

The Sun Belt Tournament gets underway tomorrow in Lafayette. Eighth seeded ULM will face ninth seeded Georgia State at 4 PM. The Cajuns are the top seed and will play the winner of that game on Thursday night.

A bill to allow teachers to call a student by the name and pronoun on their birth certificate passed in the House 61-33. Bill author Bossier City Representative Raymond Crews says it’s a parent’s rights bill, but New Orleans Representative Matthew Willard says it appears to be more for teachers, not parents.

A Bossier Parish High School teacher has been charged with Indecent Behavior and Prohibited Conduct. The Bossier Parish Sheriffs Office says 36-year-old Lacey Oakes of Haughton allegedly shared sexual images and played a sexually explicit game with students. Oakes was terminated from her employment.

In Calcasieu Parish an early Sunday morning game of hide and seek ends with a gunshot wound to the back of a 14-year-old girl’s head. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says 58-year-old David Doyle of Starks told deputies he saw shadows outside his home, went inside to retrieve a gun, then back outside and fired shots when he saw several people running away from his property. Among his charges are aggravated battery and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. The girl has non-life-threatening injuries.

Economist Ed Seyler says by providing more data to show which locations benefit from the tax incentive, it could possibly direct stakeholders to grow the industry in other sections of the state…

The report indicates overall the tax credit appears to have a positive impact on household income, but the credit does not generate enough tax revenue to make up for what the state loses in revenue.

The House Commerce Committee will vote today on a bill that would allow a person to break a lease if multiple criminal activities are reported to police within a tenth of a mile of their rental. The bill is in response to the death of three-year-old, Devin Page Junior, who was hit by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting. The child’s grandmother Cathy Toliver says her daughter pleaded with the landlord to let her out of her lease the day her grandson was fatally shot…

An ordinance called “Devin’s Law” designed to make rental properties safer by imposing new regulations was passed last year by The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council. Opponents of the legislation say the bill is too excessive for property owners.

59 year David Doyle of Starks faces a number of charges after he allegedly shot a 14-year-old girl who was playing hide and seek on his property this past weekend. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says Doyle shot at people he saw running away from his property. The girl is expected to be okay.

As we know crime is a big issue in Louisiana. A bill before the House Commerce Committee would require landlords or property management companies to provide proper security cameras and lighting on their residential properties. Former LSU football coach Ed Orgeron has announced he’s engaged to his girlfriend Brandy Nicole. Coach O posted a photo on Twitter that shows off Brandy’s engagement ring. The 61-year-old Orgeron divorced his previous wife in April of 2020 after 23 years of marriage. This will be his third marriage.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in the April 28th fatal shooting of an employee at Mandina’s restaurant in New Orleans. The alleged gunman, 22-year-old Kyron Fazande, was taken into custody at a home in Houston. He’s accused of killing 23-year-old Hilbert Walker the Third. A customer at the restaurant was also wounded.
