The Saints began offseason training activities (OTA’s) yesterday as they usher in a new era in New Orleans football under quarterback Derek Carr. For Carr though, he says he hasn’t had to change much for the franchise with the strong culture already in place in the building. In the NBA playoffs…the Celtics avoided the sweep by beating the Heat last night. Miami still leads the Eastern Conference Series three games to one. Game five is tomorrow in Boston.

In the conference baseball tournaments, LSU has a comfortable lead over South Carolina in the SEC Tournament, while Louisiana Tech is locked up with Charlotte in a tight one in the Conference USA Tournament.

UL-Lafayette will look to defend its Sun-Belt title starting against 5th-seeded Texas St. tonight. The 36-20 Cajuns swept the Bobcats in the season series and will have to beat them a fourth time in one season if they want a shot at a postseason berth, but coach Matt Deggs says he’s approaching this rematch like any other game…

Legislation to require public libraries to limit children’s access to certain materials cleared a House committee Tuesday.  Louisiana Association of School Librarians President Amanda Jones says child safeguards are already in place at virtually ALL libraries, and she says people are using libraries and librarians as political pawns…:

A 29-year-old Deville woman has been arrested on rape, human trafficking, and sexual battery charges.  Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Tommy Carnline says they began their investigation into Danielle Sober Trapp in early April in reference to criminal sexual conduct….

Detectives were able to uncover more alleged crimes and warrants. Carnline says Trapp was re-arrested a second time on outstanding warrants on April 28. The investigation is ongoing.

The House approves a bill that would allow people 18 years of age and older who are not felons to conceal carry a firearm without a permit or training in a 70 to 29 vote. Oil City Republican Representative Danny McCormick says this is the Second Amendment right of every citizen.

The House approves a bill that would allow law-abiding citizens 18 years of age and older to conceal carry a firearm without a permit or training. Referred to as the “Constitutional Carry” bill, many believe under the 2nd Amendment gives law-abiding citizens the right to bear arms and should not require a concealed carry permit. Oakdale Representative Dewith Carrier favored the bill. He said the issue is not people carrying guns.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested 31-year-old Casey Hallford and 19-year-old Arianni Williams following a mid-day shooting leaving three injured, one which remains in critical condition. Hallford shot his three siblings during a verbal altercation and fled the scene with Williams. Hallford has been charged with 3 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 1 count of illegal discharge of a weapon while Williams has been charged with 3 counts of principle to attempted first-degree murder.

Senate Bill 7, from Turkey Creek Republican Senator Heather Cloud, drew opposition in the House Education Committee from St. Tammany resident Joan Simon, who accuses Republicans of using the issue to score points with voters…:

The Tigers and Gamecocks split a two-game weather shortened series in Columbia in April. LSU Coach Jay Johnson says the early start won’t affect how he and his team approach the game…

The former Jesuit and LSU standout looks like he’s completely recovered from his Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in March. The Saints also have Juwan Johnson at tight end. He’s coming off a 42-catch campaign where he also hauled in seven touchdowns. New Saints quarterback Derek Carr says they have a talented group of tight ends…

State lawmakers are working to bring back a Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. In 2018, state lawmakers suspended the sales tax holiday because of a huge budget deficit. Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey’s legislation would provide a three-day sales tax exemption on the purchase of guns, ammunition and some hunting supplies. The legislation is nearing final legislative passage.

A bill to establish a database system so rape victims can follow where their kits are in the process passed in the Senate. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says the tracking system would provide accountability with the rape kits.

A bill to provide a $5 thousand tax credit to families adopting a child under the age of three is approved by the full House in a 97 to 0 vote. Bill author, Baton Rouge Representative Rick Edmonds says it’s about helping families help children.

Under the legislation, if the $5,000 credit exceeds the adoptive family’s tax liability, the state would give the family the balance of that money the year the adoption takes place. The bill heads to the Senate.

At the State Capitol, the House unanimously passes a bill to symbolically do away with slavery in Louisiana, removing it from the state Constitution. Baton Rouge Democrat Rep. Edmund Jordan is the measure’s author. Last year, he pulled the same bill himself, because the language was a little unclear. He says he’s cleared that up this time…:

That bill heads to the Senate. If it wins final passage it would go to voters this fall. The bill bans slavery and “involuntary servitude” with the exception of convicts sentenced to hard labor.

A bill aimed at making sure lower income school kids get a good breakfast and lunch – for free – clears a House committee. Marrero Rep Kyle Green says assuring kids are well-fed will result in better education outcomes…:

It would cost taxpayers about $850-thousand a year. The bill goes to the House floor next.

 

Adoptions can be pretty costly, but a bill that would provide families with a $5,000 tax credit for adopting a child under three has won approval of the full House. Teiko Foxx reports…:

A Mandeville man is under arrest, after a resident’s doorbell camera captured him trying to break into their home, while armed with a large knife. Clear images show Derrin Cavalier banging on the door, throwing himself against it and cussing loudly. He was located by police, captured and jailed for aggravated attempted burglary.
