Before LABI, Waguespack served as Governor Bobby Jindal’s Chief of Staff and Executive Counsel. U.L.-Monroe political science professor Pearson Cross says the Jindal Years are looked at unfavorably by many Louisiana voters, and that could be used against Waguespack by opponents…:

The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a teacher from Grant High School for allegedly sending a nude photo to a student. 43-year-old Deborah Steen, of Pineville, is accused of indecent behavior with a juvenile and prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student.

Top-ranked LSU baseball defeated Lamar 9 to 2 as Christian Little gave up one run over four innings for the win. Tommy White homered and drove in four runs. Northwestern State defeated ULM three to one as Chase Prestwich pitched seven strong innings. The Cajuns knocked off McNeese five to three. Will Veilon’s two-run double in the sixth inning was the key hit. Southeastern blanked Alabama A-and-M 14 to nothing.

The Pelicans started a four-game homestand with a 113 to 106 win over Dallas last night. C-J McCollum scored 16 straight fourth-quarter points and finished with 32 points. New Orleans needed McCollum to step up as Brandon Ingram left the game with a right ankle injury. Before the game, the Pels said Zion Williamson’s injured hamstring is healing, but he’ll be re-evaluated in two weeks.

LSU held off Georgia 72-67 to advance to the second round of the SEC Tournament. Four players scored in double figures led by K-J Williams who had 18 points and Trae Hannibal had 14 points and 11 boards.

Louisiana Tech survived and advanced in the Conference USA Tournament by beating Florida International 81-76 in overtime.

Northwestern State fell short in the Southland Conference Tournament Championship Game losing to Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi 75-71. McNeese has fired head coach John Aiken after two seasons.

The New Orleans City Council has voted unanimously to investigation whether Mayor LaToya Cantrell violated state law with a mailer sent to over 15t0-thousand residents. The mailer touted Cantrell’s accomplishments as mayor; an effort to counter a recall effort against her. State law says no public money can be used to advertise the name of a public official. The mailer was paid for with taxpayer dollars.

BESE approves a new funding formula for the ‘23-24 school year that would give $2,000 raises for certified teachers and $1,000 for non-certified and support staff. State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley says the formula also gives schools the flexibility for additional pay to instructors needed in critical shortage areas like math, science, and special ed.

Brumley says it allows schools to direct funds where they are needed most to drive down vacancy numbers and increase teacher quality. $61 million has been allotted as a block grant for schools to use as they wish.

The across-the-board raise two-thousand-raise and block grant must have legislative approval first but Brumley says allowing schools to direct additional funds as they see fit, could give select teachers an additional bump in salary.

Governor Edwards is encouraging lawmakers to approve the two and one-thousand-dollar teacher pay increases and Brumley says while Louisiana will still be below the southern regional average every increase helps. Brumley says how schools use the additional funding to either attract, retain, or reward teachers is historic.

Chief of LSU Health Shreveport Professor of Pediatrics Infectious Diseases, Dr. John Vanchiere (Van-cherry) says the infection can be easily transmitted from person to person.

The CDC reported an estimated 450 thousand cases are treated in the US every year. The majority of cases are among international travelers, homeless people, individuals with weakened immune systems, and gay men.

People infected may experience severe diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Vanchiere says the best prevention is good hygiene.

Most people infected will recover within a week to 10 days.

Spring football kicks off this morning for LSU as Coach Brian Kelly embarks on his second season as head coach.  Kelly rebuilt the program from top to bottom in 2022. Wilson Alexander, who covers the Tigers for the Advocate says this season LSU returns 26 players who started at least one game last year. That includes most of their offensive skill players…

Louisiana State Police Trooper Kate Stegall says they were first made aware of the accusations last November, and the investigation turned up numerous alleged assaults that happened from 2010 to 2013; starting when the victim was just 14…:

This weekend, Louisiana returns to daylight saving time something Haughton Representative Dodie Horton wishes was year-round.  Horton is presenting a bill  that would make daylight saving time permanent in Louisiana, but it only goes into effect if Congress passes the “Sunshine Protection Act.”

The Pelicans begin a four-game homestand tonight against Dallas. New Orleans is 31-and-34 and tied with two other teams for the final spot in the play-in tournament. But the Pels will play six of their next eight games at the Smoothie King Center. Tip time tonight is at 6:30.

LSU football has signed an offensive lineman out of the transfer portal that started 23 games the last two seasons at Maryland. Mason Lunsford will enroll at LSU this summer and he’ll have two years of eligibility. The Tigers were looking for competition at center and guard. Spring football kicks-off tomorrow for the Tigers.

The Cajuns kicked off spring practice yesterday, but starting quarterback Chandler Fields was not on the field. Coach Michael Desormeaux says Fields is recovering from a procedure for a non-football injury. He’s expected to be out for a week. But with Q-B Ben Wooldridge sidelined with an ACL injury, freshman Zeon Chriss took snpas with the first team.

McNeese has fired men’s basketball coach John Aiken after going 22 and 45 during his two seasons in Lake Charles. LSU faces Georgia tonight in the SEC Tournament, while Louisiana Tech takes on FIU in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. Both teams are 14 and 17 on the season.

State Police credit a brave victim with coming forward to tell of years of sexual abuse, allegedly at the hands of her pastor. 56-year-old Milton Martin III, of Chalmette, is charged with sexual battery and carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He is pastor of the First Pentecostal Church of Chalmette. He’s accused of molesting the victim for over three years; starting when she was 14. LSP Trooper Kate Stegall says she the teen is courageous…:

Police in Baton Rouge says up to 200 people – boys, girls and even parents – were involved in a massive fight that broke out at Brookstown Middle School this morning. Police says a dozen were taken into custody. The fight reportedly started over a beef between two girls. One police officer was seriously injured in the brouhaha. He’s being treated for a head cut and broken hip. More arrests are likely.

Franklin Parish deputies raid a Winnsboro home and find large amounts of meth, crack cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, marijuana and prescription pills…plus loads of cash and guns, all in the presence of small children. Two arrests were made. The kids are with Family Services. More arrests are expected.

Congressman Garret Graves says the Republican Party’s slim majority in the U-S House of Representatives is a big reason why he decided not to run for governor. Graves, who was re-elected to a fifth term last year, has a lot of important issues to tackle on the federal level…

The gubernatorial race has several major candidates, Republicans Jeff Landry, John Schroder, Sharon Hewitt and Richard Nelson. Democrat Shawn Wilson and independent Hunter Lundy are also contenders. Graves said it was not an easy decision to remain in Washington D.C.

Graves says even though he’s not a candidate for governor, he plans to be involved in the race by asking the candidates direct on how they plan to improve Louisiana.
