First Lady Jill Biden is visiting the Louisiana Cancer Research Center in New Orleans today. Director of the Tulane Cancer Center Dr. Prescott Deininger (dinning-grr) says one of their top scientists will talk with the First Lady about vaccines that are helping eradicate some forms of cancer like cervical cancer.

19-year-old Shamichael Pearson was convicted Thursday in the shooting death of Shreveport High school basketball star, Devin Myers just over a year ago. A Caddo District Court jury returned a verdict after 20 minutes of deliberations. Myers was shot the day after his 17th birthday.

Picayune Police Department arrested a male and female in the cold case of an infant female found inside a garbage bag in Picayune, MS in 1992.  With the help of advanced technology, the parents of the murdered female, Inga Johansen Carriere was arrested on Feb. 28 and Andrew Carriere was taken into custody on March 9th. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was perinatal asphyxia due to smothering and the case was classified as a homicide.

La Nina weather conditions are gone and neutral weather conditions are expected for Louisiana as through spring and early summer. Over the last three years, the U.S. has been hit by 14 hurricanes and tropical storms that caused a billion dollars or more in damage, totaling $252 billion in costs. State Climatologist Barry Keim says La Nino has moved on but it does not mean we are totally safe from an El Nino.

Before LABI, He was a key member of Governor Bobby Jindal’s administration. Pollster John Couvillon, with JMC Analytics, says a hindsight negative impression of Jindal’s leadership shouldn’t hurt Waguespack…:

Waguespack’s entrance means there are now seven major candidates running for governor. Five Republicans, Democrat Shawn Wilson and independent Hunter Lundy.

Farewell La Nina. Experts says the Pacific Ocean cooling weather phenomenon – which usually creates more severe Gulf storms for us – has petered out. State Climatologist Barry Keim says there is now a good chance that an El Nino could develop by this fall…:

The New Orleans City Council is holding adults accountable for kids who get their hands on guns. The council approved an ordinance that would allow adults to be arrested and charged with careless storage of a firearm. Adults could face fines of $500 or more and six months or more in jail.

The Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after beating Lamar 66-57 in the Southland Tournament Championship game.

Top ranked LSU baseball begins a three-game series against Samford tonight. The Bulldogs are 6-and-6 on the season.

Louisiana Tech visits third ranked Arkansas this weekend. Jonathan Fincher starts on the hill today for the Bulldogs, Rawley Hector gets the ball on Saturday and Reed Smith will pitch on Sunday after only pitching one inning last week after getting hit on the hand by a batted ball. But Tech Coach Lane Burroughs says he should be good to against the Razorbacks….

Police in Baton Rouge say a local man was killed when he encountered a high speed police chase. Cops were chasing a sedan that fled a traffic stop, when it crashed into 56-year-old Victor Duncan’s pickup in an intersection. Duncan died from his injuries. The fleeing suspect is in serious condition.

No La Nina or El Nino means neutral weather conditions for Louisiana. The La Nina weather phenomenon that increases Atlantic hurricane activity is no longer a threat to the state. State Climatologist Barry Keim says an El Nino is less threatening than its counterpart.

El Nino is warmer in the northern U.S. and cooler than normal in the south. A trend in weather forecasts suggests a 60% chance of an El Nino taking charge this fall.

The SEC has debated a new scheduling format with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma in 2024. The most recent conversations have been around a nine-game conference schedule with three permanent opponents. Waguespack is the fifth major Republican to enter the race. Waguespack has led L-A-B-I since 2013. Prior to that he served in former Governor Bobby Jindal’s administration.

DCFS has hired more than 300 employees for their child welfare division after they were plagued with several child death cases that fell through the cracks.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is asking the state legislature to appropriate three million dollars to build new animal shelters and improve existing ones. Director Jeff Dorson says about half of the state’s parishes lack a facility to take in strays, missing and hurt animals….

The Department of Children and Family Services has hired 326 full-time workers since July, which increases their staff to 35 hundred. The agency has been under fire after several high-profile child death cases. DCFS Secretary Terri Ricks says while she’s pleased, they still need more case workers.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is urging the state to approve funding for new animal shelters and improve existing ones. Director Jeff Dorson says lawmakers can approve the much needed funding in the upcoming legislative session

State Police are investigating a Wednesday afternoon crash in Jackson Parish that took the life of 29-year-old Katelyn Granger and her 7-year-old passenger, Anna Rivers. Master Trooper Javier Leija (Hah-vee-er LAY-hah) says at this time they don’t know why Granger failed to break before hitting a stopped school bus on Highway 167.

LSU returned to Spring practice today as Head Coach Brian Kelly looks to improve on his first season in Baton Rouge.  Defensively, junior linebacker Greg Penn is LSU’s top returning tackler and Freshman All-American linebacker Harold Perkins is also back. Mekhi Wingo returns to lead the defensive line along with Maason Smith. Alexander says there are a bunch of starting spots up for grabs in the secondary….

The Pelicans kicked off a four-game homestand with a 113-106 win over the Mavericks last night. Both Luka Doncic and Brandon Ingram left the game with injuries, but guard CJ McCollum held off the Mavs with a 32-point performance. McCollum scored 16 points straight in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Pels return to action Saturday against OKC

The LSU men’s basketball team upset Georgia 72-67 in the opening round of the SEC tournament. The Tiger’s 2-16 conference record earned them the bottom seed in this year’s tournament, but LSU was able to get out to a 12 point lead at the half. After blowing double digit leads in their last two games, the Tigers held on behind an 18-point night from KJ Williams. Trae Hannibal and Shawn Phillips also both had double-doubles and LSU advanced to the second round of the tournament against a Vanderbilt team fighting for a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Louisiana Tech defeated FIU 81-76 in overtime behind a 23-point performance from Keaston Willis. Quandre Bullock added 8 more in OT to advance past the Panthers. Isaiah Crawford had 22 points of his own as four Bulldogs reached double-digits. LA Tech is a 10 point underdog in their matchup against second seed North Texas tonight in the second round of the tournament.

Louisiana Tech football announced the addition of 19 transfers ahead of spring practice. Among the transfers is former LSU linebacker Kolbe Fields. Fields plated in 11 games for the Tigers on defense and special teams making four tackles.Spring practice for the Bulldogs begins March 21st.
