The top-ranked LSU baseball team had another run-rule victory last night as the Tigrs trounced Samford eleven to one. Right-hander Paul Skenes (Skeens) struck out 12 and first baseman Jared Jones launched two home runs. Game two of the series is at 6:30.

Louisiana Tech got behind five to nothing and lost to third-ranked Arkansas seven to four. Jonathan Fincher gave up five runs in four innings and suffered the loss.

The Cajuns held off High Point eight to six. Kyle DeBarge hit a couple of two-run home runs. Nicholls blanked ULM eight to nothing. Tyler Theriot tossed six shutout innings. McNeese blanked Prairie View nine to nothing, Auburn over Southeastern Louisiana seven to one, Northwestern State knocked off Alabama A-and-M seven to zip and Little Rock over Grambling nine to five.

The Pelicans host Oklahoma City tonight at 7:30. Brandon Ingram is questionable with an ankle injury.

In NFL news, the Carolina Panthers now have the first overall pick after making a trade with Chicago that sends wide receiver D-J Moore to the Bears.

The Saints have offered a restructured contract to quarterback Jameis Winston. Reports say if he doesn’t take it, he’ll be released.

There are reports McNeese is closing in on hiring former LSU basketball coach Will Wade. Wade was fired from LSU last year for alleged NCAA Violations that involved inappropriate payments to players.

And LSU gymnast Haleigh Bryant recorded three perfect tens during last night’s meet against West Virginia. She becomes the first LSU gymnast to accomplish that feat.

State Police investigators have arrested the parents of an infant female found inside a garbage bag in Picayune, Mississippi back in 1992. Inga Carriere (Carrie-ah) and Andrew Carriere. State Trooper Kate Stegall says the breakthrough in the case is a testament to the advancements in forensic technology as DNA profiles and fingerprints were developed.

Metairie Representative Laurie Schlegel has filed legislation to give prosecutors twice the time to screen cases wherein a juvenile offender may be charged as an adult.  After the 30-day deadline was missed for two New Orleans teens arrested for carjacking and attempted murder. She says her bill will help with similar cases…:

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness will end its Hurricane Ida Sheltering Program on May 31st. Following the destructive Category four storm, the state supplied thousands of displaced families with travel trailers. GOHSEP Director Casey Tingle says the trailers were always viewed as a temporary living arrangement.

The Saints have reportedly offered quarterback Jameis Winston a restructured contract that would keep him on the team and serve as Derek Carr’s backup. If Winston does not take the new deal, he’ll be released on March 15th when the new league starts.

 

The average price for crawfish has dropped 50 cents a pound, to $2.84 a pound for live mudbugs.  The current price drop is down 30 percent compared to prices this time last year. That’s according to Crawfish App Co-founder Laney King who says to enjoy the low prices now – by next weekend which is St. Patrick’s Day she expects to see an increase in prices due to demand.

There’s been another drop in crawfish prices as we head into the second weekend of March. Laney King, co-founder of the Crawfish App says crawfish prices across the board dropped another 50-cents this week and Louisiana consumers can expect to pay on average $2.84 a pound for live crawfish. That’s 29-percent lower than the same time last year. Laney says south Louisiana will see prices even lower…

State lawmakers file legislation that would give prosecutors twice the time to screen cases wherein a juvenile offender may be charged as an adult. Metairie Representative Laurie Schlegel says her House Bill 54 was inspired by the case of two New Orleans youths arrested for carjacking and attempted murder. The D.A. missed a 30-day deadline to charge them as adults for nearly killing their victim. She says her bill will help with similar cases…:

Schlegel’s bill would double the prescriptive period for charging juveniles as adults; from 30 days to 60 days. She says charging certain minors as adults allows more serious punishment when they commit violent crimes, like rape, murder, attempted murder and carjacking…:

Last month, an Orleans Parish judge dismissed charges against 17-year-old Kendell Myles, after he escaped juvenile detention, carjacked a man and shot him. The reason: the 30-day period to charge him as an adult had passed. Schlegel says prosecutors need more leeway in dealing with perpetrators like Myles…:

Schlegel’s bill will come up in the regular legislative session, which starts a month from today.

State Police released more details today on the March 4th fatal police shooting involving law enforcement from Bossier Parish. The subject led officers on a high speed chase and then crashed his vehicle. L-S-P says when the man got of the vehicle he was armed with an A-R 15 style automatic BB rifle. The investigation continues.

Her visit underscores Cancer Moonshot, the initiative to cut the cancer death rate in half over the next 25 years. Biden will be joined by Senator Bill Cassidy and his wife Dr. Laura Cassidy, who will highlight the importance of colorectal cancer screenings and investing in cancer research. Tulane Cancer Center Director, Dr. Prescott Deininger (dinning-grr) says the LCRC was funded by the state more than two decades ago.

LSU has kicked off spring practice and running back John Emery is not on the practice field. Coach Brian Kelly says Emery is focusing on academics. Fellow running backs Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin are also recovering from injuries, so that means more reps for former Union Parish star Trey Holly, who is the state’s all-time leading rusher on the high school level. Coach Brian Kelly is expecting big things from Holly even though he’s already going through some growing pains…

The college basketball seasons came to an end yesterday for LSU, La Tech and Southern. The Southeastern women’s basketball team is heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history as the Lady Lions defeated Lamar 66 to 57 in the Southland Tournament title game.

Five high school championship games will take place today in Lake Charles. At noon it’s the Division Four select, state championship game as top seeded Avoyelles Charter faces second seeded Family Christian. Another one versus two matchup will take place tonight az Zwolle faces Anacoco in the non-select Division Five title game.

In college baseball, top ranked LSU hosts Samford in the final weekend of non-conference action before SEC play begins. Louisiana Tech will take on third ranked Arkansas. Southeastern is at Auburn. The Ragin Cajuns host High Point. Nicholls travels to ULM and Northwestern State begins an eight-game homestand by taking on Alabama A-and-M.

No, La Nina or El Nino means neutral weather conditions for Louisiana. The La Nina weather phenomenon that increases Atlantic hurricane activity is no longer a threat to the state. State Climatologist Barry Keim says an El Nino is less threatening than its counterpart.

El Nino is warmer in the northern U.S. and cooler than normal in the south.

The time change this weekend is ideal for changing the batteries on your smoke detector. In 2022, nearly 80 Louisianans lost their lives in residential fires. Ashley Rodrigue with the State Fire Marshal’s office recommends upgrading smoke alarms older than 10 years to 10-year sealed battery alarms.
