Early childhood educators in Louisiana are receiving active shooter training this week. Institute for Childhood Preparedness Director Andrew Roszak says this age group, of zero to five, is often overlooked and they offer specialized instructions on how to respond and even prevent an active shooter.

The organization is conducting 11 training sessions in Louisiana this week blanketing the state from Shreveport to New Orleans in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education. Roszak says they’ve received positive feedback from individuals who’ve completed the training.

Last year there were 647 mass shootings in the U.S. and there have already been 79 this year alone.

Participants are able to practice the techniques they’ve learned in a controlled environment and receive feedback from professional instructors. Roszak says it’s very important for early childhood educators to be prepared for the worst to protect such a vulnerable age group.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell publicly addressed the recall effort to remove her from office during a press conference today. Governor John Bel Edwards’ office determined there was an insufficient number of signatures submitted by NOLATOYA to force a recall election. Cantrell says she is grateful to the community that supported her through this and this speedbump is now in the rearview mirror.

More than 67,000 signatures were submitted but only 27,243 of the signatures were deemed valid; far below the 45-thousand needed. Cantrell is optimistic that the city will be able to move forward and refocus.

Cantrell is the first Black woman to be elected mayor but her popularity has dwindled since crime escalated. Cantrell says she will continue her leadership as Mayor and will work collectively with everyone to build a better city.

A shelter-in-place was ordered and all lanes of Interstate 10 leading to the Calcasieu River Bridge were shut down this morning as a result of a chlorine leak from Bio Lab in Westlake. State Police Sergeant James Anderson says multiple agencies responded…

Anderson says a vapor cloud was spotted in the sky and air monitors determined it was chlorine. He says a shelter in place and the I-10 near the Lake Charles bridge were closed for about two hours, before re-opening just before noon.

The LSU Lady Tigers left today for Greenville, South Carolina, where they’ll play Utah on Friday afternoon in a Sweet 16 matchup in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Many felt it was right to exclude Detroit-Mercy from the C-B-I, because they had a losing record at 14-19. Jaeson Maravich says it blows his mind that Davis would say he’s upset that he was not given one more game to break the record…

Maravich scored 3,667 points during three varsity seasons at LSU. Jaeson Maravich points out that Davis had five years to break the record, because he got an extra year as a result of the COVID pandemic…

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell addressed the unsuccessful effort to recall her during a press conference today. The recall needed 45-thousand valid voter signatures to be placed on a spring election ballot, but failed by a large margin. Cantrell says she hopes to put the whole thing in the past and move forward to build a better city…:

The public now has until the end of the day Sunday to submit comments regarding the massive overhaul of I-10 in and around Baton Rouge. DOTD extended the deadline for feedback because so many are concerned with plans to narrow I-10 to one lane in each direction in places for extended periods.

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Chairman, Doug Ireland says after retiring, Reed returned to the place he called home – Lincoln Parish.

Physical activity can prevent the reoccurrence of colon cancer according to a new study by LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Brooke Thorington has more.

The City of Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy is making a few changes in leadership. Roy announced in a city council meeting held yesterday – he will reassign a new chief for the police and a new chief for the fire department. The reason for the new assignments was not addressed.

A New study by LSU Pennington Biomedical Center shows patients who were more active were able to prevent a reoccurrence of colon cancer. Director of the Cancer Metabolism Program at Pennington, Dr. Justin Brown says post-operative exercise increased the survival rate in many patients and they will continue their research.

Louisiana homeowners affected by Hurricane Ida are invited to attend the Restore Louisiana Program outreach sessions administered by the Louisiana Office of Community Development to help rebuild and repair homes. The first session will be held Thursday in Lafourche Parish from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Matthews Government Complex. Executive Director Pat Forbes says they are holding several outreach events to discuss the program.

 The City of Alexandria will have a new Police Chief and new Fire Department chief according to Mayor Jacques Roy. Roy made the announcement during the city council’s meeting on March 21. Ronney Howard currently serves as the chief of APD. The city’s current interim fire chief, Curtis Beauregard, was put in place after former chief Larry King left back in December 2021. The reasoning behind the change is unknown.

Louisiana Office of Community Development is offering assistance to homeowners who still have unmet needs associated with damage from Hurricane Ida through the Restore Louisiana Program. There will be a series of outreach events held across the state – the first stop will be in Lafourche Parish at the Matthews Government Complex from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Executive Director Pat Forbes

Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey is bringing back its Greatest Show on Earth and its North America tour will begin at the Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City September 29th to 31. The show halted a 146 year run in 2017 because of high operating costs and animal rights groups protesting. The show no longer has animals, but still promises spectacular acts.
