Metairie Republican Representative Laurie Schlegel says her House Bill 16 would impose stiffer penalties on persons who commit a string of burglaries or any burglary within a mile of any fair, festival, entertainment or sports event or parade.

Cleveland built a double digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back last night as the Pelicans lost to the Cavaliers 118 to 107 to end a three-game losing streak. Donovan Mitchell had 30 points for the Cavs. Brandon Ingram led New Orleans with 25 points.

In college basketball today, LSU hosts Texas A-and-M, the Ragin Cajuns are at Troy, ULM visits Sun Belt leader Southern Miss. Louisiana Tech takes on Conference USA leader Florida Atlantic, Southeastern hosts Nicholls. Northwestern is at Texas A-and-M Commerce.

Tomorrow is Super Bowl 57 and former Minden and La Tech star L’Jarius Sneed is playing in his second Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Minden Head Coach Spencer Heard knew Sneed would be a special player when he first saw him as a sophomore…

Sneed’s Minden High School Coach Spencer Heard says even though Sneed plays professionally he often comes home to visit family and friends and also spends time with elementary students as a role model.

Texas and Oklahoma will join the SEC in 2024, a year earlier than planned. The addition of O-U and Texas means the SEC will need a new scheduling format and it’s expected to result in the addition of a ninth game to its conference football schedule.

Earlier this week, LSU Coach Brian Kelly filed for divorce from his wife of 28 years, but sources with the LSU athletic department say the divorce petition will be withdrawn. There were pictures on social media showing Kelly and his wife having dinner together on Thursday night.

Sunday is the Super Bowl and former Minden and Louisiana Tech star L’Jarius Sneed will play in his second Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs. Minden Football Coach Spencer Heard says there’s a lot of respect for Sneed as he’s known to spend time with elementary students……

The Pelicans will conclude their four-game homestand tonight by hosting Cleveland tonight at 9 PM in the Smoothie King Center. New Orleans has won three in a row and added veteran wing man Josh Richardson yesterday in a trade with San Antonio. Richardson is averaging nearly 12 points and shooting 36-percent from three point territory.

Jackson says she blocked the plaintiff for using foul and abusive language. Schwartzmann says blocking a user from a public official’s page is a First Amendment violation…:

A Metairie lawmaker proposes stiffer penalties to help fight the seeming explosion of auto burglaries. Over 30 vehicles were burglarized during a New Orleans Pelicans game recently, while the owners were watching the game. State Rep. Laurie Schlegel says her bill will be a deterrent…:

Deputies in Calcasieu Parish are investigating a fatal accident that took the life of a 4-year-old boy. They report a mail truck driver was turning around in a home’s driveway, when he hit the child, who was riding a scooter. A blood tox sample was taken from that driver, and officers say charges cannot yet be ruled out.

A teen reportedly involved in an attempted carjacking, who was shot by a Shreveport Police Department officer, is now in custody. 18-year-old Zechariah Stutts allegedly fired on an SPD cop and he fired back. Stutts was wounded and treated, then charged with attempted murder.

Metairie Republican state Representative Laurie Schlegel says her House Bill 16 would impose stiffer penalties on persons who commit a string of burglaries or any burglary within a mile of any fair, festival, entertainment or sports event or parade. Current law calls for sentencing of zero-to-12 years. Schlegel says her bill would add mandatory jail time with a conviction…:

Her bill will be debated in the regular legislation session, which begins April 10th.

State Wildlife & Fisheries agents arrest a Patterson man for cutting the tails of nutria, the releasing the animals; injured but still alive. 45-year-old Harris DeHart faces numerous counts of cruelty to animals, illegal taking of non-game animals and more. Non-game animals may only be taken by use of a .22 rifle or small-bore shotgun. DeHart was gigging the animals, so they’d have an impalement wound and an amputation wound.

Schlegel brings the bill as the number of motor vehicle burglaries grows statewide, but especially in cities like New Orleans. At a recent Pelicans game, as many as 30 cars and trucks were broken into while folks were watching the event. She says there’s a real danger involved in such cases…:

Current law calls for sentencing of zero-to-12 years. Schlegel says her bill would add mandatory jail time with a conviction…:

Schlegel says convicted auto burglars would be assured of at least a year behind bars, which may be a sufficient deterrent. Her bill will be debated in the regular legislation session, which begins April 10th.

The former  LA Tech star has a knee injury but is expected to play.

Despite playing in the professional ranks, Heard says Sneed visits the Webster Parish city often to see family and friends and also spends time with elementary students in Minden.

Heard remembers Sneed fondly and says he started coaching at Minden during Sneed’s sophomore year. He says Sneed’s talent was clear and that he played both defense and offense in high school.

Sneed is one of five former Louisiana high school players playing in Super Bowl LVII (57). Chiefs’ safety Justin Reid played for Dutchtown High in Geismer, and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire went to Catholic High in Baton Rouge. Eagles running back Boston Scott played at Zachary High and wide receiver DeVonta Smith attended Amite High School

Lawmen in Baton Rouge are looking for the man who rode a horse onto the Southern University campus Monday night, then ran away on foot when the animal suddenly collapsed; leaving it to die. They ask tipsters to come forward with that horseman’s identity.
