31-year-old Terrance Robinson of LaPlace faces cruelty charges after the one-year-old he was babysitting suffered a suspected drug overdose. St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office says Robinson was arrested after he took the child to the hospital for treatment on January 5th. Robinson is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, and he was babysitting while she was at work. What the child ingested was not disclosed. The child was listed in stable but critical condition according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The governor’s office says during that time hundreds of thousands of Louisianans received treatment for cancer, hypertension and mental health. California-based Niagara Bottling announces plans to build a 160-million dollar state-of-the-art production facility near Hammond. Niagara has more than 40 production facilities worldwide and the Tangipahoa Parish facility will be the first location in the state. Construction is set to begin in the second quarter of 2023 and the production facility will employ 70 individuals with an average annual salary of 55-thousand dollars.

Another candidate has entered the 2023 governor’s race. 68-year-old Lake Charles small business owner and attorney Hunter Lundy says he will run as an independent. Lundy says he has a servant’s heart and a stubborn desire to talk about things that should be done. The primary is in October.

State health officer Doctor Joe Kanter says a new COVID-19 variant has caused a bump in COVID infections coming out of the holidays. The XBB.1.5 variant is expected to become the most dominant version in the next few weeks. Kanter says fortunately it’s not increasing hospitalizations at this point, but he expects cases to continue to rise.

Howard won a state championship at St. Thomas More in Lafayette and is the son of former LSU QB Jamie Howard.

Kanter says the World Health Organization believes this to be the most transmissible variant yet, which he says is to be expected. He also says holiday gatherings are responsible for the uptick in cases.

Optimism for the near-future continues to drop among Louisiana’s small businesses. The National Federation of Independent Business regularly canvasses members for its Optimism Index, and NFIB State Director Dawn McVea says the survey posted a 12th straight month of member businesses who feel the next 3-to-6 months will be rough…:

51-percent of NFIB member businesses say their outlook for the next six months has gotten worse. McVea says a large number say inflation is still their biggest obstacle in meeting costs and eking out a profit…:

41 percent of members report continued trouble filling job openings. 43-percent report they’re unable to raise prices to offset costs; an all-time high. Also, fewer members expect their sales to improve in the near future. McVea says many are looking to their legislators for policy changes that may help them prosper…:

McVea says almost certainly, some Louisiana businesses will be forced to close their doors unless the economy improves.

Currently, one lane is open on I-10 eastbound at Evangeline Thruway. Druilhet says the first phase of work is expected to be completed between January 20th and 22nd.

Phase two of the project includes the removal of necessary bridge components and installing newly constructed grinders and a bridge deck.

After all of the pieces are secured and in place, a concrete closure pour will be performed to tie in all new components to the existing bridge overpass.  Druihet says phase two will not take place until after Mardi Gras…

Dakota Theriot plead guilty today to killing five people after a multi-parish shooting spree in 2019. Among his victims in Livingston Parish were his girlfriend, her father, and her brother, then his parents in Ascension Parish. 21st Judicial District Attorney Scott Perilloux says even with Theriot diagnosed with mental illness he expects he’ll be placed with the general population at Angola.
