A 30-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were killed by a tornado that tore through the town of Keithville in Caddo Parish last night. Caddo Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Robert Jump says the tornado touched down in the Pecan Farms area

Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says the young boy was found dead in a wooded area the woman was found deceased one street over from where her home.

Since a law that allows those 24 and older who are adopted access to their original birth certificate went into effect more than 600 have applied. Leesville Representative Charles Owen, who authored the legislation says he’s grateful the legislature realized it’s ok to change a law you believe was intended to protect individuals but instead it hurts people.

The law went into effect on August 1st.

Erath Representative Blake Miguez won the silver medal for team USA in the 2022 IPSC World Shoot. Miguez, who’s been shooting since he was 12, is a former world-champion pistol shooter. He along with Team USA traveled to Thailand where Miguez finished in fifth place in his division.

National Treasure the TV series begins streaming today on Disney+ and the series is not only shot in Baton Rouge it’s set there also. Film Baton Rouge Executive Director Katie Pryor says a Disney production is huge for the capital city and the old saying “if you build it, they will come” helps recruit other productions when they see what Baton Rouge can offer.

A tornado in Keithville Tuesday leaves two persons dead. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator’s office says a missing mother, whose home was destroyed by the twister, was found dead among debris one street over. Her son was found dead in a wooded area nearly a half-mile away. Crews continue to look for victims and survivors this morning.

In Union Parish, a tornado virtually levelled a neighborhood in Farmerville. At least 25 people are reported injured. The worst damage is reported along Highway 2 near Scotts Hideaway Road. A shelter is now open at the Farmerville Recreation Center.

Children’s Hospital in New Orleans opens the first eating disorder center in the state. CHNO psychologist Amy Henke says eating disorders among kids are on the rise…:

A tornado watch is in effect until 1 pm for most of southern and southeastern Louisiana. Be alert for possible twisters, plus large hail, very high winds, heavy thunderstorms and possible flash flooding. The severe weather should move out later today, bringing clearer and cooler weather.

A tornado watch is in effect until 1 this afternoon for a swath of parishes from Cameron in coastal western Louisiana to most all areas north of Lakes Maurepas and Ponchartrain. The National Weather Service says be alert for possible twisters, plus hail up to ping pong ball size, very high straight line winds and severe thunderstorms. The rough weather should start moving eastward by late afternoon.

A Caddo parish mother and son were killed by a tornado that destroyed their Keithville home Tuesday. Emergency workers are engaged in cleanup and searching for other survivors or possible victims today.

Residents of Farmerville in Union Parish are stunned by a twister that took out almost a whole neighborhood and injured 25 people. An emergency shelter is now open for those left without a home…right before Christmas.

 

A member of the state legislature wins acclaim for his marksmanship skills. Erath Rep. Blake Miguez took the silver for Team USA in this year’s IPSC World Shoot. The 30-year competitive pistol shooting veteran said this competition was especially tough…:

A LaPlace couple has been arrested for the beating death of their 1-year-old baby girl. St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre says Keaura Dillon, and her boyfriend, Renard Robinson – both 23 – were arrested on Monday. He says Robinson confessed during questioning. Charged with murder, his bond is set at $300-thousand. Dillon is charged as an accessory. Her bond is $190-thouisand.

The Pelicans seven game winning streak ended last night as the Utah Jazz defeated New Orleans 121 to 100. Zion Williamson had 26 points and nine rebounds, but the Pels struggled from beyond the three-point line as they went four for 27. Utah made 15 three-pointers and outrebounded the Jazz 59-43. The same two teams play again Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The LSU men’s basketball team improved to nine and one last night with a 67-57 win over North Carolina Central. K-J Williams had a double-double, 18 points, and 11 rebounds. Derek Fountain got his second consecutive start and scored 17 points and had a career-high 14 rebounds. The Tigers’ next game is Saturday at home against Winthrop.

Also last night, Southern lost to Xavier 79-59. Tonight the Lady Tigers host Lamar and in men’s action, Louisiana Tech hosts Stephen F Austin. Tip time is at 6.

Former LSU linebacker Trev Faulk is stepping down as head coach of Lafayette Christian. Faulk has been at L-C-A for the last seven seasons and they’ve made it to the state championship game six times.

Jimmie Hillman is stepping down as head coach at Marksville and Many’s Tackett Curtis has been named the 2022 MaxPreps Louisiana High School Player of the Year.

There’s a lot of speculation on where Sean Payton might coach next season. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the Arizona Cardinals are a possibility if Arizona decides to fire Kliff Kingsbury…

Tornadoes that tore through Louisiana yesterday have left at least 2 persons dead. In Caddo Parish, Sheriff Steve Prator says a woman’s body was found under debris one street away from her home which had been destroyed. Her child’s remains were found about a half-mile away. Another woman was seriously hurt in the storm. First responders continue their work this morning.

90 miles away, in Farmerville, a tornado virtually levelled an entire neighborhood, leaving almost 25 people injured. So far no deaths are reported there. More on these disasters as it develops.

Severe weather is expected today across southern Louisiana, with the possibility of tornadoes. Strong thundershowers, possible hail, damaging winds and flash flooding are anticipated. Be on alert for further weather watches or warnings. The bad weather is expected to begin moving out of the state by early evening, bring clearer and cooler temperatures.

Children’s Hospital New Orleans launched the first pediatric hospital-based Feeding and Eating Disorder Center in Louisiana and the Gulf South. The center will provide gold-standard assessments and treatments to adolescents suffering from eating disorders. Amy Henke, Psychologist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans says there has been a significant rise in eating disorders amongst children and adolescence.

Henke says the center was designed as an outpatient clinic to give families a chance to receive treatment in their home settings. She says this will allow kids to still be kids beyond their disorder.

Patients who don’t live in New Orleans will still be able to access care and treatment. Henke says with virtual care families can still get the same outcome.

The series follows Lisette Olivera’s character as she follows clues to a lost treasure and uncovers family secrets along the way.  Catherine Zeta-Jones plays her nemesis determined to find the lost relics before anyone else.  The series uses multiple locations in Baton Rouge, like the Old State Capitol, the Old Governor’s Mansion, and the USS Kidd. Pryor says when attractions like that are featured in a Disney production it’s a visual postcard of the city on a global scale.

Pryor says it’s the old if you build it, they will come mantra and when other productions see what Baton Rouge can offer, they will follow.

In addition to ideal visual locations, Pryor says trained film crews and established vendors in Baton Rouge only entice more productions to the area. The first two of ten episodes can be streamed tonight on Disney+.

Leesville Representative Charles Owen, who is adopted himself and wrote the law, says the remaining requests are being processed.

Now children who were adopted in Louisiana, once they reach the age of 24, can request a copy of their original birth certificate.  Owen says several individuals who have since found their parents have reached out to him thanking him for the legislation. He says their stories are inspirational.

Since 1977 original birth certificates and the identity of the adoptee’s birth parents were sealed. Owen says he’s grateful the legislature realized it’s ok to change a law you believe was intended to protect individuals but instead it hurts people.

Owen says it averages 10 to 12 weeks to receive your original birth certificate once the request is received.

Many of those covering the NFL both with organizations and in the media believe former Saints Head Coach Sean Payton isn’t done coaching, and some have even gone on to say he could be back with a team as early as next year. Payton is currently with Fox Sports in Los Angeles and has spent time with both the Chargers and Rams organizations. Many have speculated he would like to coach Justin Herbert and the young, talented offense of the Chargers, but new rumors have arisen surrounding the Rams coaching job as Sean McVay considers an early retirement. Saints analyst Mike Detillier says Payton has an interest in those teams…

Recently many Saints fans have hoped to see a return to New Orleans after Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan cited the Black and Gold as a potential landing spot for Payton. A public meeting is taking Lake Charles to discuss a new I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River. Lake Charles Representative Phillip Tarver says the plan is to build the new bridge just north of the existing one…

Tarver says the projected cost of the bridge is one-point-five billion dollars and while a billion dollars in public money is set aside to build the bridge, tolls may be needed.

That meeting is being held at the Pryce/Miller Recreational Center.

The executive director of the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents Mike Faulk believes it’s time to end a mandate for juniors to take the A-C-T. Faulk says only students planning to go to college should be required to take the A-C-T…

The state Department of Transportation holds a meeting tonight in Lake Charles to take public comment about a proposed new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. Lake Charles Representative Phillip Tarver says the cost of the bridge is estimated to be $1.5 billion and one billion has already been allocated for the project. As for the remaining amount needed, he says there are differing opinions on how it should be funded.

The investigation continues into Monday morning’s in-custody death at the St. Mary Parish courthouse. State Police Trooper Derek Senegal says an altercation between a corrections deputy and an inmate resulted in the fatal shooting of the inmate…

Mike Steele, with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, says stormy weather will arrive in northwest Louisiana this afternoon and the threat for tornadoes exists for south Louisiana during the overnight hours…

Much of the southern half of the state is also under a flash flood watch tonight through tomorrow.

State Police investigators have released more details about the death of an inmate yesterday at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse. Trooper Derek Senegal says Investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the incident between the inmate and a correctional officer.

The inmate was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The executive director of the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents says Louisiana is one of only 13 states that require all high school juniors to take the ACT test. Michael Faulk says the requirement is outdated.

Faulk says students who are not planning on going to college shouldn’t have to take the ACT test because they are not taught classes that prepare them for it.
