Today marks one year until the 2023 Louisiana gubernatorial primary election, and a field of candidates has already begun to take shape. Last week, Attorney General Jeff Landry made his intentions official, but “LAPolitics.com” publisher Jeremy Alford says there are no less than 13 names declared or undeclared…:

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s spokesperson Casey Hicks says the suspected shooter – a 16-year-old boy was asked by a 16-year-old relative of Stone’s to kill her. Hicks says both suspects are now in juvenile detention pending arraignment…:

73-year-old Peter Son Nguyen (WIN) has been arrested by the enforcement division of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for alleged illegal possession and release of an exotic species. LWDF spokesperson Adam Einck says a few weeks ago they received a report that apple snails had been released in an Opelousas neighborhood pond.

Apple snails can cause extreme damage and are a highly invasive species. Einck says they were first found in the state about 15 years ago and the pond in Opelousas had not been previously inhabited by apple snails.

Apple snails have been known to clog crawfish traps and consume bait used for crawfish. As for a motive for the alleged placement of the invasive species in the pond, Einck says that remains under investigation.

Illegal possession of apple snails brings up to a $50 fine and their illegal release carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.

Beginning next week, the Louisiana Department of Health will cease to give daily COVID numbers and move to weekly updates. Currently, the state gives daily totals Monday through Friday and State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says the change will go into effect on Wednesday, October 19th.

Kanter says we’re at a point in the pandemic where we can step back from daily totals and look at things more in-depth on a weekly basis and examine trends by racial demographics and other factors.

When you compare numbers from the most recent surge, also known as the sixth surge, Kanter says we had every bit as much COVID transmission as prior surges but thankfully the clinical acuity was low.

LSU Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow returns to the Superdome this Sunday as his Cincinnati Bengals visit the New Orleans Saints. Last time in the Dome, Burrow threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns in LSU’s win over Clemson to complete a perfect 15-0 season and a national title.

After the game, he lit up a cigar as he enjoyed a smoke while sitting on a couch. Burrow was asked what he remembers the most from the celebration in the locker room…

The Pelicans lost a preseason game in Miami last night as the Heat defeated the Pels 120-to-102. Zion Williamson tweaked his ankle, but it’s not considered serious. New Orleans wraps up the preseason tomorrow in Birmingham, where they’ll face the Atlanta Hawks.

The Ragin Cajuns snapped a three-game losing streak last night and picked up their first Sun Belt win of the season as they defeated Marshall 23-13. Ben Wooldridge played the entire game at quarterback and looked good, throwing for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Cajuns had a season five sacks as they even their record at 3-and-3.

The 2-and-4 ULM Warhawks are a 17-point underdog this Saturday at South Alabama. Despite the losing record, Quarterback Chandler Rogers is having a good season. He’s completed nearly 70-percent of his passes for 1,066 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Coach Terry Bowden likes how Rogers plays the game…

Lake Charles Police and the Calcasieu Parish coroner confirm three people are dead in what appears to be an officer-involved shooting at a home there. At around 9 this morning, officers responded to a report of a naked man waving a gun around at a residence on 7th Street. Little else is known right now other than that three persons are dead. LCPD has asked State Police to take over the investigation; standard procedure for shootings involving LEOs.

Metropolitan Crime Commission President Rafael Goyeneche says now the personal security of Councilperson Helena Moreno has been reassigned out of what he believes is retaliation for her being critical of Cantrell. He says the driver has been accused of taking photos of Cantrell using the apartment and sending them to the media…:

Police in Springhill, in Webster Parish, say they have busted a marijuana grow house. Working with Webster Sheriff’s deputies, officers found over a hundred pot plants in various stages of growth, plus irrigation systems, guns, ammo and cash. No word as yet on who or how many were arrested.

EBR deputies say a 17-year-old girl convince a 16-year-old boy to kill 33-year-old Markeshia Stone who was a relative. She was shot multiple times and died in a local hospital. The boy is charges with murder; the girl with principal to 2nd degree murder.

Benefits for Social Ssecurity recipients will increase by 8-point-seven percent next year which is the largest hike since 1981.  Louisiana AARP Director of Advocacy Andrew Muhl says the average retired worker benefit for a person in Louisiana is around 14 hundred dollars a month…

Muhl says the higher-than-normal cost of living adjustment is needed so seniors do not lose their purchasing power with inflation at eight-percent.

Around 70 million people, including retirees, children, and disabled people, receive Social Security benefits. Muhl says the average increase for disabled workers will be around $106 more per month or $1275  more a year. He points out that Medicare Part B premiums are dropping.

Brumley says the department is hoping to address the drop in scores with their high school accountability proposal that’s on the table. He says there needs to be an emphasis on the ACT because in Louisiana it is the gatekeeper for TOPS and college scholarships.

Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says there are three scenarios for going to a grand jury…
