Senate President Page Cortez wants to increase the fines for speeding on the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. The speed limit on the bridge is 60 miles per hour for cars and 55 for trucks. Cortez says speeders on that stretch of roadway believe they are saving time

Cortez’s bill calls for a speeding ticket on the basin bridge to be five times the standard fine imposed. That would be $875 for first-time offenders.

A special House committee looking into Greene’s death, tried to ask Cain about the sanitizing of the phone, but Houma Representative Tanner Magee says Cain didn’t provide answers because of the L-S-P led investigation….

LSU baseball completed an impressive sweep of Mississippi State with a 13-3 win yesterday in Starkville. It’s the Tigers’ first league sweep since March 2019 and the first conference sweep on the road since 2017. Freshman Josh Pearson got the start in right field and hit two home runs and freshman pitcher Grant Taylor earned the win in relief.

Louisiana Tech swept Rice over the weekend to stay one game back of Southern Miss for first place in Conference USA. Tech topped the Owls three to one as Jonathan Fincher threw six scoreless innings to improve to 6-and-1 on the season.

The Ragin Cajuns swept Arkansas State. U-L Lafayette defeated the Red Wolves seven to four in ten innings as Cooper Rawls earned his second win in five days. ULM lost to Troy 13-11 in eleven innings as the Warhawks were swept.

The Pelicans wrapped up the regular season last night with a 128-107 to Golden State. New Orleans will host San Antonio on Wednesday in a play-in tournament game. It’s a single-elimination contest.

New Orleans Democrat Karen Carter Peterson has resigned from the Louisiana Senate, ending a 23-year career in the legislature. Peterson says she needs to focus all of her energy on her struggles with depression and gambling addiction. On Thursday, she spoke about her recovery on the Senate Floor

A package of school choice bills has cleared the House Education Committee, but must also pass muster in the top House money committee. Key among them, bills to create Education Savings Accounts (ESA’s) to help parents with funding for school options other than public school. Pelican Institute for Public Policy CEO Daniel Erspamer (ER-spay-mer) says ESAs are good policy solutions that are already benefitting thousands of families around the country…:

But Louisiana School Superintendents Association executive director Michael Faulk says the state already has a school vouchers program, and this will mean less state funding for local school systems. He says the ESA’s won’t be everything proponents promise…:

The Education Savings Accounts bill, known as House Bill 33, would create the accounts, establish funding and rules for the Department of Education to oversee accountability. Erspamer says the Pelican Institute is behind the idea of public education funding following the child; not the school. He says the bill would give parents – on average – an extra $5500 yearly for kids’ education choices…:

Approved by the House Education Committee last week, the bill also has to pass fiscal scrutiny in the House Appropriations Committee before it can get a debate on the House floor. What will it actually cost taxpayers? And can that expense fit into the budget? Faulk says those fiscal uncertainties are the problem with ESAs…:

The Lafayette Republican’s bill will increase speeding penalties to up $2,500 for those going over the legal limit and increase speed limit signage and signs for truckers to drive only in the righthand lane. Cortez says the bill includes clear signage so motorists are well aware of the price they’ll pay if they speed.

The speed limit on the bridge is 60 miles per hour for cars and 55 for trucks. Cortez says speeders are putting others in extreme danger along an area that’s difficult for emergency crews to respond to because it’s above water. And not to mention the frustration it creates when a crash stops traffic.

Cortez says he’s talked with DOTD leaders about the legislation, and they suggested more cameras along with the bridge. Cortez says he’s open to any suggestions to deter drivers from speeding on the bridge.

LSU pulled off a huge come from behind win to beat Mississippi State five to two last night. The Tigers were down two to one in the ninth with nobody on and two outs, when catcher Hayden Travinski walked, pinch hitter Josh Stevenson was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch moved them to second and third and that’s when Tre Morgan lined a single to center to score two runs. Dylan Crews followed that with a two-run homer and a five to two win. Ma’Khail Hilliard pitched six strong innings and then great work from the bullpen from Eric Reyzelman, Riley Cooper and Paul Gervase.

Louisiana Tech’s Jorge Corona hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Bulldogs defeated Rice five to three. The Ragin Cajuns blanked Arkansas State ten to nothing. Brandon Talley and four relievers combined on a four-hitter. ULM had just two hits in a seven to two loss to Troy.

In SWAC baseball action last night, Grambling pitcher Shemar Page tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts as the Tigers took down Arkansas Pine Bluff 14-3. Southern slammed Alcorn State 16-6. Still a three-way tie for first place in the West division, between Southern, Grambling and Prairie View.

Nicholls and Northwestern State are tied for first in the Southland with five and two league records. The Demons lost to UIW 8-2 last night, while the Colonels outscored HBU 11-1 in seven innings.

McNeese committed five errors in a nine to five loss to UNO.

In basketball, North Carolina State guard Cam Hayes has committed to LSU. He’s a former four-star recruit who averaged seven points and two assists a game last season.

Louisiana Tech All-Conference forward Kenneth Lofton Junior has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds last season.

The Pelicans are at Memphis for a 5 PM tip. A win for New Orleans and they’ll have home court advantage in Wednesday’s play-in tournament game against the Spurs.

State Police place Lt. Doug Cain on administrative leave. Superintendent Col Lamar Davis issued a statement that Cain is on paid leave pending the ongoing administrative investigation of removing data from his cellphone. Cain is second in command at LSP, and Davis says this is in the best interest to eliminate any question of the integrity of the investigation. Cain was a high-ranking officer during the fatal arrest of Ronald Greene and subsequent investigation.

A State Police officer faces charges after allegedly committing a hit-and-run in St. Tammany Parish and falsely reporting one in Orleans. LSP spokesman Sgt. Dustin Dwight says Lt. Chad Lacoste is charged with Malfeasance in Office and Injuring Public Records…:

Lacoste is on administrative leave.

A Baton Rouge man, arrested for child abuse, will now be charged with murder after the death of his own daughter. Police says 23-year-old Aaron Hawkins was being held on cruelty to a juvenile, after his 5-year-old child was brought to an ER unresponsive. The investigation is ongoing. BRPD spokesman L’Jean McKneely says it could have been prevented and asks that we all call law enforcement if we suspect abuse.
