In addition to giving teachers at least a 15-hundred dollar pay raise, Edwards also wants to give a $100-a-month pay hike to first responders; like law enforcement officers and firefighters.

Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell has legislation that would prevent students from accessing pornography or sexually explicit content on their personal phones or computers while connected to a university’s wifi network or internet service provider. State Police has hired the Bowman Group for one-point-five million dollars to perform a comprehensive independent external review and assessment of the agency’s policies, procedures, practices, culture and training of troopers. The Saints and Panthers are reportedly the two teams most interested in trading for Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson. The three-time pro bowl selection did not play last season, because of 22 civil lawsuits and ten criminal complaints were filed against him alleging inappropriate contact with massage therapists. The criminal charges have been dropped, clearing the way for Watson to play in 2022. Rod Walker with the Advocate Newspaper says if the Saints want to make a deal with the Texans it will cost them draft capital…

The Saints are also reportedly interested in signing former LSU Tiger and Lutcher standout Jarvis Landry. The 29-year-old receiver was released by the Browns.

For the second time in four seasons, the LSU men’s basketball team heads into the NCAA Tournament with an interim coach. They made it to the Sweet 16 in 2019 without Will Wade who was suspended after his voice popped up on an FBI wiretap allegedly discussing financial payments to a recruit. Wade has now been fired for alleged recruiting violations, but interim coach Kevin Nickelberry is confident he and the staff can bring the team together under these circumstances as well….

Northwestern State head coach Mike McConathy has announced his retirement after 23 seasons as the head coach of the Demons. McConathy won 330 games at Northwestern and posted another 352 victories at Bossier Parish Community College. McConathy also took Northwestern to the NCAA Tournament three times.

A recent state report showed that nearly 50-thousand students go without their regular teacher each day, and roughly 25 percent of teachers in the classroom are either uncertified or teaching outside of their field. Baton Rouge Representative Rick Edmonds says the crisis is only getting worse.

To help plug the hole in the dyke, Edmonds wants to create inducements to bring retired educators back to school. The Republican has a bill that would raise the cap on how much a retired teacher could receive from their pension if they returned to the classroom.

The Louisiana State Police has hired a firm to conduct a comprehensive and independent review and assessment of LSP policies, procedures, training, and overall culture. Here’s trooper Dustin Dwight.

The LSP says this is an extension of Colonel Lamar Davis’ action plan to restore trust in the agency and provide an outline for reform and the assessment is well worth its cost.

He says some rules would have to be temporarily relaxed in order to provide those incentives, including one that caps what teachers can earn if they do return to a public school position.

Edmonds says the measure would only apply to those who retired by December 31 of 2021 and be limited to three years, to see if there is an impact. He also says there is strong support for the measure from local superintendents, teachers’ unions, and the Department of Education.

Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell is hoping to ban access to sexually explicit or pornographic content by anyone using state-issued phones and or computers at colleges and universities.  Mizell says while it’s already enforced among state offices it now adds postsecondary education to the adopting the policy.

And while Mizell thought the bill would not be controversial whatsoever she has encountered pushback from groups saying a filter forbidding access of sexually explicit or pornographic content colleges is a first amendment violation.

In 2018 legislation prohibiting the access of material deemed sexually explicit via state-issued devices went into effect with colleges given the exception for research purposes. But Mizell says it’s time for that to change now, especially in light of the Title IX violations at LSU.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Education.

The New Orleans Saints met with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson on Monday night, according to reports. Watson is a very talented quarterback that comes with some baggage. A grand jury recently decided not to pursue charges against him for sexual misconduct allegations made by nearly two dozen women, but he still faces a civil suit and possible NFL suspension. Rod Walker, who covers the Saints for The Advocate says the pursuit of the controversial QB was unexpected.

Besides the off-the-field issues, Walker says the cost for the cap-strapped Saints to acquire Watson won’t be cheap.

Watson is scheduled to earn roughly $34 million per season over the next four years.  If the Saints acquire the 28-year-old quarterback, Walker says they’re doing it to win a championship right now.

By the time they tip-off, it will have been more than two weeks since the Tigers took the court. Coach Kim Mulkey says the rest vs rust debate isn’t something she had to consider during her time at Baylor.

Following the ouster of Will Wade and associate head coach Bill Armstrong, Kevin Nickleberry will lead LSU into the NCAA tournament. When Wade was suspended for the 2019 tournament the Tigers rallied and advanced to the Sweet 16. Nickleberry is confident he and the staff can bring the team together under these circumstances as well.

The Special Committee to inquire into the circumstances and investigation of the death of Ronald Greene will meet Tuesdays. Expected to testify are former LSP Superintendents Col Mike Edmonson, Col Kevin Reeves. That meeting is scheduled for 11 am.

Governor Edwards is calling for $15-hundred teach pay raises and $750 for support staff but President of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, Larry Carter wants even more if the funds are found, he says not making the investment could be even more costly later.

Carter is pushing for $2,500 for teachers and $12-hundred fifty for support staff.

Assistant coach Kevin Nickelberry will lead LSU into battle when they start NCAA tournament play Friday against Iowa State…The Tigers are 20-12 this season and making their third consecutive tournament appearance. Nickelberry says the players were heartbroken when they learned of Will Wade’s firing Saturday, but they’ll be ready to play come game time.  He stressed that this is a unique situation, and a special opportunity for the Tigers.

LSU baseball is back in the top five after collecting four wins over nonconference foes, according to Collegiate Baseball. The Tigers face Tulane tomorrow night before starting SEC play this weekend.

The Saints are one of the teams in pursuit of Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.  According to reports the Saints and Panthers have made offers to Houston for Watson, who plans to meet with both teams over the next two days. The 28-year-old has four seasons remaining on his contract with an average payout of $34 million in salary and bonuses.

After a 25-5 season, the LSU Lady Tigers are the three seed in the Spokane Region of the Women’s Basketball Tournament and will play Jackson State on Saturday in the PMAC. Kim Mulkey has led LSU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018 and this is the first time since 2014 that the Lady Tigers will host first and second-round games.

After a 40-day retirement, Tom Brady has decided to return to the NFL for one more run. The 44-year old will be playing his 23rd season, three short of the record held by George Blanda. Besides the teams in the NFC South, at least one other person is extremely disappointed by Brady’s return. What was supposed to be his final career touchdown ball sold for $518 thousand just hours before Brady announced his return.

Nearly 17-thousand people in Louisiana have died with COVID over the two-year pandemic.

Ouachita Parish deputies seek a disabled man for a murder earlier this month. LEOs say a warrant is out for 34-year-old Isaac Bradley, who is described as a 6-foot black man, with two prosthetic legs. Anyone with knowledge is asked to call the Ouachita sheriff’s Office.

Opelousas Police are looking for a runaway 15-year-old last seen Sunday night and reported missing by her parents today. Victoria Schoenburg is white, 5-foot-one, 115 pounds with long brown hair. Call Opelousas OPD is you see her.

Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator says 64-year-old Felton Beaner Sr. is accused of improperly touching the juvenile multiple times over an extended period. The charge is misdemeanor sexual battery. Beaner turned himself in today.

Governor John Bel Edwards is asking lawmakers to approve a $1500 teacher pay raise and $750 increase for support staff, President of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers Larry Carter is hopeful that’s a mere starting point and educators could see even more in their paycheck after this legislative session.

Carter is hopeful the raises could go even higher in an effort to attract and keep teachers from leaving the state. Carter says they are asking for even higher raises so Louisiana educators can reach the southern regional average sooner than later.

As for feedback from legislators on the pay raises, Carter says it’s mixed, while most support the raises others worry about the sustainability of pay raises in the future. But Carter says not making the investment could be even more costly.

Rising inflation is another reason Carter urges lawmakers to give teachers and support staff raises to keep them from leaving the profession or state sooner than later.

But Stine calls his legislation a measured, reasonable approach and insurance companies who act in good faith will not be impacted…

LSU basketball has a storied history, but a murky future with major NCAA allegations to face and sanctions likely to follow. LSU alumnus and super fan James Carville believes LSU will survive this latest storm and come out ahead on the other side.

The LSU athletic program has taken a number of hits over the past few years, from an ongoing Title IX investigation to these latest problems with the basketball program. Carville says that athletic director Scott Woodward is up to the task of setting things right.

Whatever the program is going through, Carville doesn’t think it will have any impact on the support the players get as they enter the NCAA tournament, and that the team can overcome this adversity.

Louisiana mark 2 years today since the first CVOVID death in our state was reported. Mr. Edwards says just because the emergency order is ending doesn’t mean COVID is over.

Lawmen in Baton Rouge searching for a missing woman and her child find two bodies today. The remains were found in opposite ends of the city, but police believe they may be connected with the disappearance of the 24-year-old woman and her two-year-old son. They’ve been missing since March 5th. Neither body has been identified as yet.

Another New Orleans-based cruise ship passenger goes overboard in the Gulf. Last Friday, a man leaped over the rail of a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship. As of today, his body has not been found. The ship is en route back to New Orleans. Last month a woman jumped overboard from a Carnival cruise ship; also never to be seen again.
