State Senator Heather Cloud didn’t think that juvenile justice would be her calling in the legislature. But after visiting a detention center in her district and seeing a rise in violence at facilities as well as numerous escapes, she says enough is enough.

Cut 7 (12) “..flaws and gaps.”

Cloud wants to see a plan of action to address the psychological, physical, and educational needs of juveniles and has asked for one from three separate secretaries. She hopes that with more legislators behind her and the cooperation of OJJ, there will be one soon.

Cut 8 (10)  “…path moving forward.”

Funding hasn’t been an issue, according to Cloud, pointing out that OJJ has received regular increases to its budget. She says the department has failed at both rehabilitating young offenders and protecting its employees, and that taxpayers deserve and demand better.

The entire Who Dat Nation remains on pins and needles as they await word on whether or not the Saints have acquired Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Social media has been buzzing with speculation and rumors since Watson completed his visits with his prospective new teams. Nick Underhill of New Orleans-dot-Football says Saints officials and owner Gayle Benson made a final pitch in Atlanta on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, free-agent running back Ty Montgomery is signing with the New England Patriots after spending the last two seasons in New Orleans.

LSU women’s basketball guard Khayla Pointer continues to add to her trophy collection. The fifth-year senior has been selected as a second-team All-American after averaging 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, and just over five assists per game so far this season, setting career-highs in each category. Pointer was named first-team All-SEC last week and earlier this year became the first player in LSU men’s or women’s basketball history to total at least 15-hundred points, 500 assists, and 500 rebounds in a career. Next, she’ll lead the Tigers into their opening-round matchup with Jackson State, Saturday at 4 pm in the P-MAC.

This year’s NCAA tournament appearance for LSU’s men will be the sixth straight with a different head coach. Four of the previous five won at least one game in the tournament before bowing out. The Tigers’ last interim coach, Tony Benford, famously led LSU to the Sweet 16 in 2019 when Will Wade was suspended. That team had a bit more experience than this one, but Kevin Nickleberry says being young won’t stop the Tigers from being ready to play.

Cut 21 (19) “…will perform.”

The women’s National Invitational Tournament, better known as the NIT, tips-off tonight as well. The Tulane Green Wave host Jacksonville State. The Wave’s 20 wins so far this season are the most for the program since 2015-16. In an effort to stave off record-high inflation, the Federal Reserve has raised the prime short-term lending rate by ¼ of a percent; meaning higher loan rates for businesses and consumers. Louisiana Realtors Association CEO Norman Morris says standard mortgage rates are now at over 4-percent; their highest since April of 2019. He says that WILL mean buying a home may be a bit harder – especially for first-time buyers – but the real estate industry remains positive for the economy to stabilize…:

CUT 13(11)      “…to fight this inflation.”

Despite the interest rate hike, Morris says real estate is a sellers’ market right now, and prospective buyers will still be motivated to make that big purchase. He says home-buying is still a great way to build personal wealth and one’s credit score.

 Cut 6  (12) “…deliver goods”

Amar says not only does a toll bridge place a burden on truckers, but the ultimate cost is passed on to taxpayers. She says studies show if you take for example a $100-million dollar project it will end up costing $120-million because of a public-private partnership.

Cut 7 (07) “…break even”

Amar believes the administration needs to put the Calcasieu Bridge on the front burner and rethink how they will spend federal infrastructure monies. She says doing so can also help relieve supply chain issues.

The most recent estimate for the project is $600 to $800 million.
