Jameis Winston will get the start tonight after Taysom Hill started the preseason opener. Saints coach Sean Payton told NBC’s Peter King that he hopes to name a starter before the final preseason game for the Saints on Saturday against Arizona.

And there are reports the starters are expected to see a lot of snaps tonight as most of the starters are not expected to play in the preseason finale against the Cardinals.

And tonight is the first NFL game where fans will have to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test to enter the Superdome. Kick-off is at 7 PM.

LSU’s number two quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers second scrimmage of preseason camp. Starter Max Johnson threw for 125 yards and one touchdown. LSU’s top two running backs Ty Davis-Price and John Emery Junior did not participate because of injuries. Sophomore Josh Williams led the ground attack as he rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The offensive line did not play well in the first scrimmage. But LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says he saw improvement with the o-line on Saturday…

The Food and Drug Administration grants full approval for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination which many physicians hope will lead to more vaccine mandates. Tulane Epidemiologist Doctor Susan Hassig says the Pfizer vaccine is now fully approved for ages 16 and up.

The FDA gives full authorization to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, a milestone achievement for medical science in the face of this historic pandemic. Tulane Epidemiologist Doctor Susan Hassig says with this in hand organizations, private and public, can now move ahead with vaccine mandates.

The UL System schools have a policy ready to go.  President Jim Henderson says their policy is now that students will either need to provide proof of vaccination or claim a personal exemption the next time they register for classes. He says it’s not really a mandate because state law prohibits true vaccine mandates at schools…

An LSU spokesperson says they are reviewing the authorization and plan to issue guidance on their vaccine policy soon.

Two-point-two million people in Louisiana have started the vaccination series. That is 48-percent of the state’s population and 40-percent of the state’s residents are fully vaccinated. Hassig hopes full approval will increase vaccination rates.

Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines have yet to receive full approval but, Hassig anticipates they will follow the EUA timeline and receive full approval within a month and three months respectively. But Hassig says there’s plenty of the Pfizer vaccine available in the US.

LSU spokesperson Ernie Ballard says now that Pfizer has full FDA approval they will begin communicating the logistics of the campus’s vaccine mandate “soon”. He says they need to fully review the approval and the President plans on implementing the mandate with more details to come.

Henderson says it is important to note that this isn’t really a “vaccine mandate” beyond the paperwork. Louisiana is one of 15 states that allow for philosophical exemption from immunization requirements.

LSU Board of Supervisors Chairman Robert Dampf echoed similar concerns about the mandate’s lack of teeth in an interview with Jim Engster on Talk Louisiana in July.

Henderson says they can’t force students to take the vaccine but he hopes full FDA approval will push more of them off of the fence. He says they’ve tried to convince students to get the shot…

The state reports almost 11-thousand new COVID -19 cases today, which includes numbers from the weekend. The state says new cases in ages 5 to 17 made up the highest rate of new cases per 100-thousand of any age group over the last week, which is a first for the state. Hospitalizations remained below 3,000 at 2,838 in which 91-percent are unvaccinated.

The FDA granted full approval to the Pfizer COVID vaccine today, which also allows local governments and universities to issue vaccine mandates. Tulane School of Medicine Epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says there’s plenty of the Pfizer vaccine available in the US.

Governor John Bel Edwards announced last week that once a vaccine receives full approval the state will implement stricter testing requirements for employees.

Today’s COVID numbers show the state appears to be beginning the slow exit from the devastating 4th wave that’s sent more Louisianans to the hospital than at any time before. At mid-week last week Louisiana had over 3,000 COVID-related hospitalizations, now we’re down to 2,838.  

BESE releases a statement saying they will not hold another meeting to discuss mask mandates in school after the last was disrupted by anti-mask protestors. BESE says instead they will allow the Governor’s statewide mandate to be the law of the land in Louisiana K-12 schools. Some Republican state lawmakers have asked residents to mail BESE in objection.

Trevor Lawrence is expected to start at QB for the Jaguars. Lawerence returns to the Superdome, a venue where he suffered the only two losses of his college career. One of those defeats was to LSU in the College Football National Championship and in last year’s semi-final contest loss to Ohio State. Kick-off tonight is at 7 PM.

With less than two weeks to go before the season opener against the UCLA Bruins, the LSU Tigers top two running backs are both hurt. Juniors Ty Davis-Price and John Emery Junior did not participate in Saturday’s scrimmage because of nagging injuries. So sophomore Josh Williams led all rushers with 66 yards on the ground and a touchdown. True freshman Armani Goodwin had six carries on 25 yards. Orgeron hopes Davis-Price and Emery return soon…

Louisiana added another 12,700 jobs from June to July and ended the month up 58,200 jobs year-to-year. Louisiana Workforce Commission spokesperson Chris Fiore says the state is moving in the right direction despite the 4th COVID wave. Fiore says if you are unemployed visit laworks.net.

While the scenes out of Afghanistan are horrifying as US Troops are withdrawing from the war-torn country after providing stability for more than two decades, the situation is extremely upsetting to US Afghanistan vets.  Louisiana Veterans Affairs Secretary Colonel Joey Strickland says they’ve been contacted by several veterans who served in the Middle East.
