The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in the 1977 cold-case murder of a Golden Meadow woman who was found shot in the back in a restaurant. LPSD spokesperson Brennan Matherne says on October 10th 1977 Deputies found 32-year-old Dianne Vegas on the floor of the Chicken House restaurant. They now believe her husband murdered her.

78-year-old Chester Vegas of Cut Off is charged with 2nd Degree Murder and left the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex Friday night after posting bail.

LSU’s season ends with a 38-25 record and came within two wins of a sixth College World Series appearance in his 15 seasons as head coach of the Tigers.

The team that ended Louisiana Tech’s season is headed to the College World Series. North Carolina State beat top-seeded Arkansas three to two yesterday to win the best out of three series two games to one.

The LSU men’s track and field team scored 84 points and won the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field title, their first since 2002 and the fifth in program history. LSU won six event titles in Eugene, Oregon, the second-most ever in meet history. Six-foot-four senior JuVaughn Harrison won the high jump and long jump. Freshman Sean Burrell of Zachary won the 400-meter hurdles.

In the NBA…Former New Orleans Hornet Chris Paul and coach Monty Williams have led the Suns to the Western Conference Finals. Phoenix completed the sweep of the Nuggets yesterday with a 125 to 118 victory. C-P-3 had 37 points.

Former LSU Tiger Aaron Nola struck out nine as the Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Yankees by blanking New York seven to nothing. Nola is 5-and-4 on the season and Philadelphia is back over the .500 mark at 33 and 32.

Only those making 300 percent or less over the federal poverty line, or about 38,000 dollars a year, are eligible.

Individuals who meet the income, age, and career field requirements can be awarded up to 3,200 dollars a year and 6,400 dollars total.

Recipients can use the grants on a range of programs from full two-year nursing degrees to multi-week industrial certification programs.

The grants will cost the state 10.5 million dollars a year and Sullivan expects they’ll spend every dollar of it, and hopefully be able to expand the program in the future.

Once signed into law the grants will begin in the summer of 2022.

Pinsonat says to override a veto after a legislative session, the majority of both houses must agree to reconvene and return to the capital city and hold a veto session.  He says it is an extremely rare occurrence and traditionally the upper chamber votes against it.

The question remains will the Republicans want the two bills passed enough to return to the capitol and hold a veto session. Pinsonat believes Edwards already has an idea of how a veto will be received if he does indeed refute the legislation.

White says as a domestic abuse survivor she was triggered by Seabaugh telling her she didn’t understand the legislation she wrote. Seabaugh says the argument was over a technical difference in the bill’s wording. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder confirmed State Police is investigating the incident.

Seabaugh says White was “way too emotionally involved with the bill” and is “irrational about the issue”. He also says other unnamed individuals accused White of similar behavior earlier in the session.

White apologized for her actions on the House floor Thursday after withdrawing the legislation at the heart of the conflict but has not made further comments about it. The bill was opposed by both the conservative Christian advocacy group Louisiana Family Forum and the NRA.

Seabaugh says White is guilty of simple battery or assault and wants law enforcement and House leadership to take action against White. He says if he had done the same thing, he’d be tossed out.

Governor Edwards says he’ll look closely at a bill that would gradually increase funding for roads and bridges by an additional 300-million dollars per year. Edwards is concerned that the money is coming out of the general fund, potentially creating shortfalls in other areas of state government, especially after federal coronavirus aid is spent.

Supporters of the proposal say the state has made major investments in education, health care, and other areas while roads and bridges continue to deteriorate.

It’s free fishing weekend in Louisiana and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fishieres spokesperson Gabe Giffin says it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce the sport to someone who’s never been and possibly recruit a new fishing buddy.

Three men were injured during a shooting in the parking lot of the Lafayette Police Department Friday night.  All three were taken to an area hospital by ambulance. No fatalities have been reported and no officers were among the injured or involved in the shooting.

Tony Spell the Central Pastor who gained national attention for thwarting COVID restrictions is once again in trouble with the law, this time he’s cited for alleged alligator hunting violations in East Baton Rouge Parish. Spell posted photos on social media bragging about shooting a gator behind his church, out of season on June 5th. Wildlife and Fisheries agents responded to the scene and found Spell in possession of a 6-foot alligator. Spell also doesn’t not have a license.

This weekend you won’t need a fishing license because it’s LDWFs Free Fishing Weekend today and Sunday. LDWF spokesperson Gabe Giffin says the annual event is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to cast a line with family and friends.
