Louisiana’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.3 percent in March, the lowest number since the start of the pandemic. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie says despite the high unemployment figure there are a lot of jobs out there to be had.

A fifth body from the Seacor Power lift boat that capsized seven miles from the coast of Port Fourchon last week was reportedly recovered last night. Eight remain missing. Family members and friends have used social media to express frustration that the missing workers are not out of the water yet. The weather has been a factor in search efforts.

There’s strong early momentum in the Legislature for the legalization and taxation of raw, smoke-able medical marijuana in Louisiana. Matt Doyle has more.

Lawmakers are happy to hear that the state added 35-hundred indviduals to the state’s workforce from February to March and the unemployment rate has dropped slightly to seven-point-three percent, the lowest rate since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Law enforcement is on the lookout this week for pickup drivers who aren’t wearing their seat belts. It’s part of the Buckle Up in Your Truck awareness campaign to increase usage. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesperson Mark Lambert says you are twice as likely to die in a crash in a pickup versus an automobile.

According to the 2019 Louisiana Seat Belt Observation Survey, occupants in a pickup truck are approximately 9-percent less likely to wear their seat belts.  If you are pulled over and not properly restrained, you will be ticketed, and Lambert says it can add up if you’re a repeat offender.

Lambert says 17-percent of pickup drivers in the Bayou State fail to wear their seat belt, and those in rural areas in north Louisiana are least likely to buckle up including their passengers.

Lambert says pickup truck drivers in Lake Charles have the highest compliance with wearing seat belts. The campaign ends on Sunday.

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon warns folks not to fall for social media fake news about COVID-19 vaccines and life insurance.

There are rumors floating around that people who get vaccinated lose life insurance coverage. Donelon says that could not be farther from the truth…

There’s only been one reported death suspected to be linked to a COVID vaccine among the over 124 million Americans who received at least one dose. Donelon says if for some reason you die as a result of a vaccine, your life insurance will still be paid out.

Since March of 2020, New Orleans is down 55-thousand jobs, Baton Rouge 18-thousand jobs, Lake Charles 17-thousand jobs, Shreveport just under 12-hundred jobs, and Lafayette just under 13-thousand jobs.

Dejoie encourages everyone without a job to go get vaccinated and when it is safe for you to return to work to do so.

The LSU baseball team dropped another SEC series over the weekend. They were on the verge of winning the series versus 11th ranked South Carolina as they had a two-run lead and needed three outs to win the second game of the series, but the Gamecocks rallied with four runs to win 4-2 and took the final game of the series nine to nothing. LSU’s four quarterbacks combined to throw for 512 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s spring game as they rotated between the Purple and White teams. Coach Ed Orgeron liked what he saw….

SWEPCO spokesperson Carey Sullivan says this is the largest renewable energy project ever for a Louisiana utility and will impact 225,000 customers.

Search and rescue efforts continue for missing crew members of the Seacor Power, a lift boat that capsized when hurricane-force winds struck the vessel in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.  Six people have been rescued and four bodies have been recovered so far. One of the bodies is that of 63-year-old David Ledet of Thibodaux, he was the captain of the Seacor Power. Nine crew members still remain missing.

The LSU spring football game is today at noon.  Tigers fans will be able to see the team in action in person for the first time in a while.  While the spring game doesn’t count in terms of a win or loss, Coach Ed Orgeron says he wants his team to be competitive.

Friday night baseball games for both LSU and Louisiana Tech were postponed due to weather.  LSU will play a doubleheader today against South Carolina with game 1 starting at 11 a.m.  AJ Labas will get the start for the Tigers in the first game of today.  Tech will play two nine-inning games today and two seven-inning games on Sunday.

The New Orleans Pelicans lost a close one last night to the Washington Wizards 117-115 in overtime.  Despite the loss, forward Brandon Ingram had a big night for the Pels, pouring in a team-high 34 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.  Zion Williamson added 21 points for the Pels.  New Orleans was on a three-game winning streak but have now lost two-straight games.  With the loss, New Orleans drops to 25-31 on the season.

The Bayou Classic between Southern and Grambling State is today in Shreveport.  The game is usually held in New Orleans but was moved due to the Covid-19 restrictions in the crescent city.  The Jaguars come into the matchup with a 3-1 record while Grambling is 0-3.  Kickoff for today’s game is scheduled for 1:30.

The 4-2 Southeastern Louisiana football team will take on 4-3 Southern Illinois at noon.  The Lions are playing well as they’ve won their last two games.  The Lions are hoping to grab a win and potentially earn a spot in the playoffs.

The ULM baseball team will host Little Rock in a three-game series starting today and concluding on Monday.  The Warhawks are 11-19 overall with a 3-9 record in conference play.  First pitch for game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m.

LSU women’s basketball coach Nikki Fargas has stepped down as head coach after ten seasons with the program and plans to pursue a career outside of coaching.  Fargas leaves LSU with a 177-129 record since taking over the team.

The LSU baseball team can clinch its second straight SEC series victory with a win tonight over the Gamecocks. The Tigers took the opening game of the series last night as Landon Marceaux struck out a career-high 12 hitters in a five to one win.

Louisiana Tech begins a huge Conference USA series tonight at home against Southern Miss. The Bulldogs are looking to stay in first place in the West Division.

Southern and Grambling will meet in tomorrow’s Bayou Classic. It’s only the second time the two schools have played football against each other in Shreveport. 1973 was the other time.

In tomorrow’s LSU spring game, Max Johnson will get the first snap at quarterback with the first team. But Coach Ed Orgeron says a depth chart at Q-B has not been established…
