A study shows New Orleans post-Mardi Gras wave of coronavirus infections has been traced back to one person who arrived in the city around February 11th from Texas. Matt Doyle has the story.

Court records describe what happened during a July 2019 traffic stop in Ouachita Parish that led to two State troopers getting arrested for allegedly using excessive force. According to the arrest warrant, a suspect was thrown to the ground and punched in the head. The report also says the suspect showed no signs of resisting.

Cold air is moving into the state today and there’s the potential for a winter storm to hit Louisiana on Sunday and Monday…

State Climatologist Barry Keim says the potential of several inches of snow falling across the northern half of the state exists on Monday.

The Pelicans’ four-game winning streak ended last night as Chicago set a franchise record for three-pointers made with 25 as the Bulls beat New Orleans 129 to 116. Zach Lavine had 46 points and as he made nine threes. His backcourt made Coby White hit eight three-pointers and finished with 30 points. New Orleans has allowed 18 or more three-pointers in a game eight times this season.

LSU shot 61-percent from the field and defeated Mississippi State 94-80 in Starkville last night. Cam Thomas had 25 points and Javonte Smart added 22 points as he was eight of ten from the field. The Tigers host 16th ranked Tennessee on Saturday.

In the Southland, Nicholls defeated Lamar 76-71, Northwestern State knocked Incarnate World 68-67 and Sam Houston defeated Southeastern Louisiana 79-61.

LSU football needs linebackers and they got one through the transfer portal. Mike Jones Junior becomes the 24th member of the Tigers 2021 recruiting class. Jones started seven games at Clemson last season and had 52 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and a couple of interceptions.

In college basketball tonight, the Ragin Cajuns host in-state rival ULM in Lafayette. The Warhawks are 2-and-10 in the Sun Belt, while U-L Lafayette is 7-and-5 and in second place in the Sun Belt West after dropping two games last weekend to Arkansas State who has a losing record. Those currently eligible for the vaccine have the option to be inoculated for COVID at their local Walmart or Sam’s Club. Louisiana is one of 22 states participating in the federal pharmacy retail program which kicks off Friday. Regional Health and Wellness Director for Walmart Bethany Evans says in the meantime you can schedule your appointment.

UL -Lafayette played a significant role in the testing and protocols for the Pfizer COVID vaccine. The New Iberia Research Center provided valuable data allowing the vaccine clinical trials to progress humans much quicker. NIRC Director of Contract Research Jane Fontenot says it was their primates that assisted.

Director of Research at NIRC Dr. Francois Villinger says their previous work with vaccines enabled the trial to know the proper intervals to test for COVID antibodies from the vaccine.

Temperatures in Louisiana will begin plummeting today and over the weekend as a polar vortex makes its way south out of Canada.

State Climatologist Barry Keim says that vortex will begin dropping the average statewide temperature every day from now until Tuesday.

Keim says because of this we could see some snow in parts of the state Sunday night and Monday night.

Temperatures are expected to remain low late into next week which Keim says could produce even more wintery mix.

ULM men’s basketball will take on the Ragin Cajuns in a two-game series, starting tonight in Lafayette and concluding Saturday in Monroe.  Warhawks coach Keith Richard says his team will face the challenge of trying to slow down guard Cedric Russell.

The Warhawks have struggled on the hardwood this season losing ten in a row, but Richard says he’s proud of the way his team continues to play hard.

ULM Poli Sci Professor Joshua Stockley says Senator Bill Cassidy’s vote calling the impeachment of former President Trump constitutional was a surprising move and this may be Cassidy, recently reelected to a six-year term, expressing a more independent streak that he was known for before his first term in the US Senate.

A Legislative committee met today hoping to build a coalition of parties interested in reversing the Biden Administration’s recent oil and gas policies. State Department of Natural Resources Secretary Thomas Harris spoke on behalf of Governor Edwards’ Administration. He says lowering domestic oil and gas production won’t lower overall carbon emissions.

Public Affairs Research Council President Robert Travis Scott expects the Legislature will seek to reform the way the state collects sales taxes when the legislative session begins in April. Scott says it’s a touchy subject as many parish leaders do not want to give up direct control of their collections that’s because local governments rely heavily on those revenues.

An arrest has been made in the Quawan Charles case. The St. Mary Parish 15-year-old was found in a wooded area of Iberia Parish last November. Iberia Sheriff Tommy Romero says they arrested one of the last people to see Charles alive, 37-year-old Janet Irvin.

The Pelicans are looking for their fifth straight win tonight as they visit the Chicago Bulls. A win for New Orleans also gets them back to the .500 mark with a 12-and-12 record. Seven players scored in double figures last night as the Pels defeated the Houston Rockets 130 to 101.

The LSU men’s basketball team is at Mississippi State tonight. The Tigers are second in the SEC in scoring, averaging 82 points per game, but Coach Will Wade says some of his players need to impact the game in other ways besides scoring…

Clemson linebacker Mike Jones Junior has announced he’s transferring to LSU. Coach Ed Orgeron had previously said he hoped to find a linebacker or two in the transfer portal. Jones entered the transfer portal on January 25th after starting seven games for Clemson last season and recording 30 tackles, four tackles for a loss, four pass breakups and two interceptions. He will be eligible to play in the fall.

So LSU can sign just one more player this year. The Tigers 2021 recruiting class ranks third in the country after four-star Walker High receiver Brian Thomas Junior signed with the Bayou Bengals yesterday. The addition of Thomas gives them ten receivers on their roster.

The defending champs in the SWAC, Alcorn State, has decided not to play football this spring due to concerns and uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Alcorn was scheduled to play at Southern on March 27th, while Grambling did not have the Braves on their schedule this spring.

Organizers say the farmer’s auction and the queen’s pageant will still be held. Next year will be the festival’s 50th anniversary and so far it’s still on the calendar.
