A win for New Orleans and they clinch the NFC South title. But the Black and Gold are also gunning for the number one seed in the NFC and a first round bye in the playoffs. Green Bay currently occupies the number one seed and they’ll host the Panthers tomorrow night.

The Pelicans play their second and final preseason game tonight. New Orleans will take on the Milwaukee Bucks. The regular season tips off on December 23rd versus the Raptors.

The Ragin Cajuns have been declared co-Sun Belt Conference Champions after the league title game was canceled because of COVID issues with the Coastal Carolina football team. U-L Lafayette Coach Billy Napier Tweeted out last night..”Surely we are going to reschedule this game, right?? Maybe these two teams can meet in a bowl game, but Commissioner Keith Gill says he does not anticipate that. .

The offseason will begin for ten high school football teams tonight as it’s the semi-finals of the non-select playoffs. In Class Five-A, 10th seeded West Monroe visits sixth-seeded Alexandria. The Rebels beat the Trojans 18-10 earlier this year. Top-seeded Acadiana hosts Destrehan in a game that can be seen on C-S-T. The Wrecking Rams defeated the Wildcats in last year’s Five-A title game. In Four-A, top-seeded Carencro hosts Neville.

Brees was pulled from the November 15th game against the 49ers upon discovery that he had multiple fractured ribs and a punctured lung.

Discounted car insurance rates are coming to an end for customers so that is why you might be seeing higher premiums. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says it’s not necessarily an increase in rates, it’s the end of rebates 38 insurance companies gave to policyholders in the state due to reduced driving during the pandemic.

Congressman-elect Luck Letlow in Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District has tested positive for COVID-19. Letlow who replaces Ralph Abraham announced on social media he’s resting at home and following CDC guidelines. Other elected officials in the state that announced they are also COVID positive this week are Congressman Cedric Richmond and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser.

Congressional negotiators will work over the weekend on a COVID-19 economic relief package that Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy has helped put together. The 900-billion-dollar proposal includes money for renters and helps landlords who are not getting regular rent checks

The proposal also contains relief for small businesses.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has been given Legislative approval to seek out private partners to finance and build a new Interstate 10 toll-bridge over the Calcasieu River. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson this type of investment is becoming more common.

The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence receives a million-dollar grant to help victims with housing. Director Mariah Wineski says a pilot project earlier this year assisted more than 600 victims with housing. Wineski says the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement grant will help more victims who face homelessness.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women with children.

The state transportation department is moving forward with a plan to build a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge, but the proposal calls for tolls to pay for the project that would cost between 700 to 800-million dollars….

Governor Billy Nungesser blames Cantrell for keeping Daigle from performing on a New Year’s eve television broadcast.

The Sun Belt Championship Game between the Ragin Cajuns and Coastal Carolina has been canceled because of a positive coronavirus case within the Chanticleers football team. That positive case along with contact tracing prevented an entire position group from playing in tomorrow’s game. Both teams have been declared co-Sun Belt Champions. U-L Lafayette now waits to see what bowl game they’ll play in.

LSU wraps up the season tomorrow versus Ole Miss at 2:30 in Tiger Stadium. The Rebels can score with anyone in college football, but they have the worst defense in the SEC, allowing 529 yards a game and 39 points per contest. The Saints released a video of practice that showed Quarterback Drew Brees going through warmups yesterday. Coach Sean Payton says he wants to see Brees play without limitations as he continues to recover from rib fractures and a punctured lung. Wide receiver Michael Thomas missed his second straight practice with an ankle injury. New Orleans hosts Kansas City on Sunday.

The LSU men’s basketball team had to cancel its scheduled game with North Texas tomorrow morning because of coronavirus protocols. The Tigers also had to cancel Wednesday’s game against UNO and Coach Will Wade, who tested positive for the virus, did not coach in Monday’s win over Sam Houston State. LSU says a decision on Tuesday’s game against VCU will be made early next week.

The Pelicans host Milwaukee tonight for their second and final preseason game. New Orleans will have a chance to say hello to Jrue Holiday. The Pels former team leader was traded to Milwaukee in the offseason.

DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says the current bridge isn’t structurally deficient but it wasn’t built to accommodate this much traffic.

The current Calcasieu River I-10 Bridge, which predates the Interstate, sees 66 percent more crashes on it than the state average according to DOTD.

Wilson says he knows a toll bridge will not be popular but the only other way to fund the 700 to 800 million dollar project would be a gas tax increase, which lawmakers have rejected…

Last December lawmakers approved the first state-level public-private partnership infrastructure project, a 165 million dollar bridge and tunnel replacement in Belle Chase.

DOTD will begin soliciting offers from various financiers and present the best offer to the Legislature for approval. Wilson says this type of investment is becoming more common.

LCADV piloted the project earlier this year and partnered with eleven domestic violence organizations to provide housing assistance and more than 600 victims were able to benefit. Wineski says the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement grant could not have come at a better time for victims who have left their abuser.

Wineski says often when a victim is trying to find safe and secure housing they are often discriminated against, despite laws to protect them, because their rental record is tarnished and a lack of funds to pay deposits.

Louisiana ranks 5th in the nation for the rate of women murdered by men and Wineski believes the grant will hopefully contribute to reducing that number.

Governor Edwards says 71 hospitals received COVID vaccine doses this week and thousands of frontline healthcare workers were able to get their first of two Pfizer shots.

Edwards says they’re trying to keep the public up to date on vaccination progress. He gave one conservative estimate for our progress through four days…

The state was told they’d receive 39,000 doses this week but Edwards says they were pleasantly surprised to find many of the five dose vials contain enough serum for six shots, a 20 percent increase.

Hospitals are starting to fill up with COVID patients. We’ve now surpassed the late summer second wave hospitalization total of 1,600 and Edwards says he’s concerned it’s only set to get much worse.

President-elect Joe Biden won the November election. Edwards bemoaned what he called a “fruitless” effort by some Republican Attorneys General, including Jeff Landry, to challenge the legitimacy of votes in key battleground states.

The US Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit filed by the Texas AG challenging those votes.

Congressman Cedric Richmond has tested positive for COVID. Richmond who is leaving his congressional seat to work with the Biden Administration, reportedly was in Georgia for the Senate Campaign on Tuesday when he developed symptoms on Wednesday. Richmond is now the fifth state official to test positive, they include AG Jeff Landry, Treasurer John Schroder, Senator Bill Cassidy, and on Wednesday Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser tested positive.

After 12-years in prison on a life without parole sentence for marijuana, Fate Winslow walked free from Angola Wednesday. 12 years ago he was arrested for selling two bags of marijuana to an undercover officer in Shreveport. Innocence Project New Orleans executive Director Jee Park says they’ve been working for about a year to overturn the sentence due to ineffective counsel.
