President Trump signed an executive order over the weekend deferring payroll tax collection for employees through the end of the year.

Postlethwaite and Netterville Associate Tax Director Kathryn Pittman says it is very important to keep in mind that this is not a payroll tax holiday.

Cut 13 (11) “…defferal.”

The executive order was part of a suite of orders, others targeting unemployment insurance, evictions, and student loans. The constitutionality of the orders is in question and a legal challenge is expected.

The President is pushing to have his deferral made into a tax holiday, but Pittman’s recommendation is to continue paying your usual payroll taxes to the IRS until more clarity is provided.

Cut 14 (12) “taxes.”

Pittman says if Congress or the Treasury Department converts the deferral into a true tax holiday then you’ll likely receive back pay for payments made during this period.

The order has led to some misunderstandings and Pittman recommends companies be clear about what their policy will be regarding the deferral offer while the issue is sorted out in D.C.

The state’s legislative auditor debunks the claims of duplicate COVID-19 cases that have led some to believe the coronavirus outbreak data is being presented in a manner to be more alarming than it is. Suspicion of inflated COVID numbers was increased with a Facebook post from Red River Parish’s homeland security office claiming that state numbers were higher because of duplicates.  Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera says the investigation shows the numbers reported by the Louisiana Department of Health are not reflecting double-counted cases.

Big Ten officials are debunking earlier reports that a 12-2 vote was held to cancel the fall sports season after a range of outlets reported the Power Five Conference was set to join the MAC in not playing for the rest of the year. The now-debunked report led to some controversy and opposition from some athletics officials within the Big Ten, including Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh who came out against the supposed decision.

The SEC has made no announcement on changing their plans to start play September 26th, and neither has the Sun Belt Conference, where Cajuns coach Billy Napier says they’ve received no indication their games have been canceled, so until they do its just business as usual.

The Pelicans are officially out of playoff contention in Orlando.

Assuming the college season isn’t just canceled plans are still in place for ULM to play LA Tech in football for the first time since 2000 for a contest at Independence Stadium in Shreveport. The game comes as both teams were scrambling to fill replace their previously scheduled games against SEC opponents. La Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland calls it a great opportunity.

The two teams are less than an hour away from each other along the I-20, and ULM AD Scott McDonald says he knows fans are getting excited.
